🛡️ Personal accident insurance in Türkiye: a practical guide

A health policy bought for a residence application may leave gaps when an injury causes treatment costs or lost income. Ferdi Kaza Sigortası (personal accident insurance) can provide a different type of financial protection. Its value depends on the benefits you buy and the activities covered.

It supplements appropriate health insurance; it does not replace cover for illness.

1. What is personal accident insurance?

It covers the insured consequences of an accident as defined in the contract: generally, a sudden external event causing death or bodily injury against the insured person’s will.

Potential situations include a fall and fracture, a road accident, burns or wounds. Sporting injuries require particular care: some activities are excluded unless specifically included.

The policy may provide benefits for accidental death or permanent disability and, where purchased, treatment expenses or temporary incapacity. Check the benefit schedule rather than assuming that every injury expense is insured.

2. What benefits can it provide?

A. Death and permanent disability
These are central benefits under the personal accident general conditions. A covered accident may trigger a lump sum. Permanent disability payments depend on the insured amount, the contractual disability schedule and the required medical assessment.

B. Treatment expenses, where included
An optional treatment benefit may cover eligible accident-related expenses such as:
• Emergency treatment.
• Imaging.
• Casts or fixation.
• Injury-related surgery.
• Physiotherapy, if included.

C. Daily incapacity benefit, where included
A purchased daily benefit can help with the financial effect of being unable to work, subject to medical evidence, limits and other conditions. Do not assume that it replaces your full earnings or provides a monthly payment.

Accident insurance covers accidents, rather than ordinary illness. Conditions such as a cold, diabetes or high blood pressure are not insured as accidents merely because they require care.

3. Who may find it useful?

It may be worth comparing if you:

• Regularly exercise or take part in sport, such as gym training, football, running, cycling or skiing.
• Drive or travel substantial distances each day.
• Work outdoors, on site or in a physically active occupation.
• Depend on your ability to work each day, for example as a freelancer, contractor, driver or salesperson.
• Want financial protection against accident consequences alongside medical cover.

These circumstances do not establish eligibility. Confirm that your particular sport, work activity and travel arrangements fall within the policy.

4. When can accident benefits add particular value?

Additional benefits may matter where your health policy leaves injury-related expenses uncovered, your activities expose you to accident risks, or a cash benefit during incapacity is important to your household finances.

Compare the protection against the premium and your existing benefits. Having few illnesses does not remove the need for suitable illness cover. If you require regular healthcare or treatment for a chronic condition, accident insurance will not replace that protection.

5. When might it be an additional layer?

If SGK, a suitable TSS plan or another health policy already funds relevant emergency and inpatient treatment, additional accident treatment cover may overlap.

A desk-based job or less demanding routine may also affect how you assess its value. However, medical insurance and accident lump sums serve different purposes: good hospital cover does not automatically provide death, disability or income-related cash benefits.

6. Terms to read before buying

1. Definition of an accident
Does it include the sports you practise, accidents at home and road accidents?

2. Exclusions
Check restricted sports, intoxication or drug-related circumstances, particular occupations and other excluded activities.

3. Benefit limits
Check the treatment expense limit, permanent disability amount and schedule, daily incapacity amount and maximum payment period.

4. How expenses are settled
Does the insurer arrange direct payment through a network, or must you pay first and request reimbursement? Which documents and prior approvals are required?

7. Illustrative situations

A fall in the bathroom causing a fracture
Imaging, a cast, follow-up appointments and physiotherapy may be required. A policy can fund eligible expenses or pay specified benefits only where the relevant cover has been included.

A road collision causing a neck injury
Follow-up treatment or physiotherapy may be needed. Whether the policy pays, and how much, depends on the accident definition, benefits, exclusions and medical evidence.

Assessing its value

Personal accident insurance can reduce the financial effect of a covered injury. It is a supplement to health insurance, with particular value depending on your occupation, activities, existing benefits and household finances.

Before paying, read the exclusions and benefit limits. For a useful comparison, identify the sport you practise, how often you drive and your existing SGK or private cover, then obtain confirmation of the relevant accident benefits.

Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: the original 2025 guide presented treatment and work-stoppage payments too broadly. Under the general conditions, death and permanent disability are central benefits; treatment expenses and daily allowances must be included in the policy. Sports and occupational risks need specific confirmation.
