The Mem û Zîn tomb within Cizre's Abdaliye Madrasa complex.
A visit to Abdaliye Madrasa and the site associated with Mem û Zîn introduces Cizre's Kurdish literary memory. The shrine attributed to the Prophet Noah reflects another layer of local belief and tradition. Understanding the distinction between a surviving building, a literary work and a religious attribution enriches the visit.
Mem û Zîn is one of Kurdish literature's best-known love stories, associated with the poet Ehmedê Xanî and his seventeenth-century work. It tells of love frustrated by social circumstances and the struggle between good and evil.
Read a short synopsis beforehand to understand its place in the city's memory. A site bearing the characters' names does not establish every detail of the narrative as historical fact.
Abdaliye Medresesi stands in Dağkapı neighbourhood in southern Cizre, beside the walls and historic cemetery. Founded in the fifteenth century, it is also known as Mir Abdal Madrasa.
Much of the madrasa is ruined. Surviving elements include the mosque, tomb, a teaching cell, an entrance and an iwan—an open-fronted, vaulted space. Begin with these and their relationship to the neighbourhood, rather than expecting a complete complex with every room intact.
Cizre Cultural Centre, one of the city's contemporary landmarks.
The Mem û Zîn site lies beneath part of the madrasa and contains graves traditionally attributed to Mem, Zîn and Bekir. Reaching the lower section involves steps; bear this in mind when planning for older visitors.
Ask which entrance and areas are open, and respect people visiting for religious or personal reasons. The light and space inside differ from the courtyard, so take care when photographing the interior.
Cizre has a mosque and shrine associated in local tradition with the Prophet Noah. A visit offers an introduction to that tradition's place in the city, without treating the grave's attribution as an established archaeological finding.
Mount Cudi is also associated with the ark's resting place in religious tradition. That background does not make the mountain an automatic part of a town tour; access requires separate arrangements.
You can add Cizre Kültür Merkezi to explore the city's contemporary cultural life. Check its programme and accessible areas before entering, and allow separate time for the heritage sites if you plan to attend an event.
Save the sites on a map and order your visits according to available entrances and visiting times. A short break between stops leaves room to read about Mem û Zîn and reflect on the relationship between literature and local memory.
