Not every legal development in Türkiye affects a visitor or foreign resident. However, certain types of official decision can have a direct effect on daily life.
This guide highlights the areas worth following and explains how to keep informed without becoming overwhelmed.
Residence permits and visas
Short-term residence for tourism:- Renewal requirements.
- Maximum permitted periods of stay.
- Location-based registration restrictions and any nationality-specific rules that actually apply to your circumstances; verify these with the migration authority rather than relying on a general list of “open cities”.
Student residence:- Enrolment and study requirements.
- Health-insurance requirements.
- Permit duration and renewal.
Family residence:- Sponsor eligibility and income requirements.
- Permit duration and renewals for an eligible spouse and children.
Work permits and the right to reside:- Work-permit rules.
- Legislation governing the employment of foreign nationals. A valid work permit can substitute for a residence permit within the applicable legal framework; “work residence” is not a separate ordinary residence-permit category. This substitution does not apply to work permits issued to applicants for international protection, conditional refugees or people under temporary protection.
Renting and housing
Residential tenancies:- Rules governing annual rent increases.
- The rights and obligations of tenants and landlords.
- Court procedures and other applicable processes for disputes.
Property and home purchases:- Rules on foreign ownership of property.
- Taxes associated with buying and selling.
- Any current conditions connecting property ownership with residence permission or citizenship. A purchase does not automatically establish eligibility for either.
Financial and tax matters
Taxes and official fees:- Income, corporate and property taxes.
- Fees for residence applications, passports and other official services, where applicable.
Banking and accounts:- Requirements for foreign nationals opening accounts.
- Any applicable restrictions or limits on transfers, withdrawals and deposits; distinguish regulatory requirements from a particular bank’s account conditions.
Municipal and local matters
Local services:- Parking charges.
- Rules for beaches, parks and public spaces.
- Local requirements affecting shops, restaurants and markets.
Public transport:- Changes to metro, tram and bus routes.
- Travel-card prices, fares and concessions.
- Conditions of carriage, restrictions on certain items, peak-time arrangements and other operating rules.
Education and healthcare
Education:- University admission arrangements for international students.
- Qualification recognition and required certificates.
- The framework for tuition fees at public and private or foundation universities.
Health and insurance:- Health-insurance requirements applying to particular categories of resident.
- Rules on access to public and university hospitals.
- Vaccinations, public-health programmes and special measures during outbreaks.
Keeping up without becoming overwhelmed
Focus on what affects you directly:- Visitors: visas, permitted short stays, bookings and appointments.
- Residents: residence permission, rent, employment, taxes, schooling and insurance.
Use the forum to find relevant explanations:- The Public Affairs & Politics section sets out:

The practical takeaway:
You do not need to follow every report about a “new law in Türkiye”. Pay particular attention to measures affecting residence, housing, employment, living costs, education and healthcare.
This section brings those developments together and explains what they may mean for your everyday life.
