The interior and decoration of a traditional Gaziantep house.
Gaziantep brings together an old town of stone buildings, remarkable mosaics and a distinctive local cuisine. For a first visit, allow two days: one for museums and markets, another for Bey neighbourhood and leisurely meals. If countryside excursions are part of your plans, give them a separate day.
Spend your first morning at the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, then head to the old market district. The museum requires a separate transfer, while several nearby markets and cafés can be combined in one walk. Avoid trying to cover every museum in half a day. Choosing one main museum leaves time to appreciate the details and read the displays.
Bey neighbourhood reveals Gaziantep's stone façades, lanes and courtyard houses. Walk slowly through accessible streets and choose a café or resting place along the way. A beautiful façade does not mean a building is open to visitors. Some houses are homes or private businesses, so ask before entering courtyards or photographing people and interiors.
A street in old Gaziantep, where local architecture and shops sit side by side.
Gaziantep Archaeology Museum reopened in August 2026 and can be added if you would like a wider introduction to the region's history. At the time of this guide's preparation, the provincial museum directory still lists Gaziantep Castle and its Heroism Panorama Museum as closed. Only plan to enter after obtaining updated confirmation, and respect barriers around the site.
After a cultural visit, choose Bakırcılar Çarşısı or Zincirli Bedesten, followed by a local meal and a break for menengiç coffee. Spread baklava and other tastings over different stops so that you can enjoy them. Leave substantial purchases of edible gifts until the end of the day, asking about packaging and storage life, especially if carrying them in a warm car.
Staying near your old-town walking route is convenient for evening strolls. With a hire car, parking and easy access to main roads become more important. Check the hotel's exact location and parking arrangements before booking. Plan a museum and markets on day one, then Bey neighbourhood, another museum and local food on day two. Give Rumkale its own day rather than squeezing it into this busy city programme.
