A gallery and archaeological displays in the Zeugma Mosaic Museum.
The Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep is the best place to see original mosaics and other objects rescued from archaeological sites. Give it an unhurried visit, and treat it as a separate destination from ancient Zeugma near Nizip.
The collection includes mosaic floors once laid in ancient houses and other buildings, alongside architectural elements and other Roman works. Understanding where each mosaic belonged in a house adds more to the visit than a photograph alone. Begin with its interpretation panel, take in the whole composition, then look closely at the small tesserae and the way they create shade and movement.
The celebrated face mosaic is popularly called the 'Gypsy Girl'; the name is a familiar label, not proof of the depicted figure's identity. Other important works include the bronze statue of Mars, the Roman counterpart of Ares, and mosaics showing mythological scenes. Give each work a few minutes and follow the galleries in sequence rather than seeking out the best-known piece and leaving before exploring the rest.
Displays designed to help visitors appreciate Zeugma's mosaics and their details.
Search for Zeugma Mozaik Müzesi to find the museum. Zeugma Antik Kenti or Belkıs refers to a different location outside the city centre. If time is short, the museum alone makes a worthwhile visit. For a fuller understanding of the mosaics and the houses they came from, visit both destinations on separate days.
Opening hours vary with seasonal arrangements, and last admission may be earlier than closing time. Check the details for your date before setting off; a summer timetable may not apply in October. Also check which ticket or pass is accepted and whether you are eligible to use it. Follow photography instructions in the galleries, avoid flash where prohibited and do not touch the works or barriers.
Allow around two hours in your itinerary as a comfortable planning estimate, rather than a compulsory length of visit. With children, choose three works and compare faces, animals and patterns instead of explaining every gallery. Ask about lifts and the accessible route if needed. Afterwards, a meal and a break, or one market, are enough: leaving time to look closely makes the experience more rewarding.
