🕌 Divriği: Discovering an Anatolian Architectural Masterpiece

Divriği lies in the south-east of Sivas Province, near the Çaltı River valley. Its mountain setting makes the journey quite different from a tour of central Sivas. The town's outstanding landmark is the Great Mosque and Hospital complex, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

Allow a separate day for Divriği, particularly if you enjoy architecture, photography and historic houses. Combine the complex with a walk through the old neighbourhoods, and arrange your return journey in advance.

📜 The Complex: History and Significance

UNESCO dates the foundation to 1228–1229, during the rule of the Mengücek dynasty, which was associated with the Anatolian Seljuks. Emir Ahmed Shah commissioned the mosque, while his wife, Turan Melek, founded the adjoining hospital.

The ensemble brings together a place of worship and a historic institution for medical care. Its remarkable stone vaulting, carved decoration and coherent architectural design account for its importance.

Following restoration by the Directorate General of Foundations, the mosque and hospital reopened for worship and visits on 6 May 2024, as announced by the Sivas Governorate.

🚪 The Stone Portals: Take Time to Look Closely

First view the building as a whole, then approach the entrances to compare the carving, its depth, and the arrangement of floral and geometric motifs.

• The mosque's north portal, also known as Cennet Taç Kapısı, or the Paradise Portal, has particularly rich, deeply carved stone decoration.
• The west portal offers a contrasting decorative approach within the same building.
• The hospital has its own imposing entrance, whose composition deserves a careful look.

For photographs, take both an overall view of each portal and close-ups of the details. Changing light brings out the depth of the carving. Follow the site's photography rules.

🏛️ Inside the Mosque and Hospital

In the mosque, look at the stone piers and the variety of vaults, and at how the prayer hall, mihrab and surrounding structural elements relate to one another.

The hospital contains a lofty central space beneath a dome with an opening for daylight. Rooms that once served the medical institution surround it. Visiting both parts makes their different functions clear while revealing the architectural connections between them.

Take your time, respect prayer times, and follow staff guidance about which areas are open.

🏘️ Historic Houses and a Walk Around Town

After the complex, explore the old houses, paying attention to façades, windows and entrances.

One well-known example is Ayanağa Konağı, thought to date from around 1838. The Divriği District Governorate explains that the mansion originally comprised several sections; part of the selamlık, the reception quarters, has been restored and opened to visitors.

Check whether entry is available on the day. Enjoy the surrounding streets and exterior architecture too, while respecting the privacy of occupied homes.

🚗 Getting There from Sivas

• By car: the Turkish Culture Portal gives a route of approximately 180 km via Kangal. Distance and journey time vary with your starting point, chosen route and stops.
• By train: TCDD lists a Sivas–Divriği service. Check departures and return options for your travel date.
• If arriving in Sivas by high-speed train, arrange the onward journey to Divriği separately and leave enough time to connect.

For a day trip, settle your return arrangements before sightseeing, especially when using public transport.

🗓️ Suggested Full-Day Itinerary

Morning: leave Sivas, arrive at the complex, and visit the portals, mosque and hospital.

Midday: have lunch in town, then explore the historic houses and visit Ayanağa Konağı if it is open.

Afternoon: allow more time for photographs and walking before returning according to your booking or driving plan. An overnight stay in Divriği lets you explore at a gentler pace.

🧳 Before You Visit

Divriği has a continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Choose comfortable walking times and check road conditions for winter journeys.

Confirm visiting hours and any advertised admission charges shortly before travelling. Save the Turkish name, Divriği Ulu Camii ve Darüşşifası, to find the correct location on maps.
