Outward and return directions, changes, payment and choosing the right route
Sultanahmet is an excellent base for exploring Istanbul, but your outing works best when you choose the right arrival point. Taksim Square is on the European side. Kadıköy and Üsküdar are different Asian-side destinations, each with its own route and arrival location. Reaching Üsküdar does not put you at Kadıköy's market, and arriving at Taksim does not necessarily place you beside your hotel or restaurant.
This guide starts at Sultanahmet tram stop. If your hotel is nearer Gülhane or Sirkeci, use the closer stop rather than backtracking unnecessarily. Save the hotel, station and final destination on your phone, then choose from the routes below.
Istanbul's tram connects the historic centre with several rail and ferry interchanges.
Choose according to your actual destination
| Destination | Route | When it suits you |
|---|---|---|
| Taksim Square | T1 to Kabataş, then F1 | Start İstiklal Avenue from the square and avoid the uphill walk to it. |
| İstiklal Avenue's Tünel end | T1 to Karaköy, then F2 | Start from the Beyoğlu/Tünel end of the avenue. |
| Central Kadıköy | T1 to Eminönü, then ferry | Visit the market and make a crossing part of the day. |
| Üsküdar waterfront | T1 to Sirkeci, then Marmaray | Cross the Bosphorus by train with one change. |
| Central Kadıköy by rail | T1 to Sirkeci, Marmaray, then M4 | An alternative when ferry times do not suit or sailings are disrupted. |
Names to recognise on signs
Match the Turkish spelling when choosing a platform or asking for an exit. Save this table:| Place | Name on signs | Why you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Sultanahmet | Sultanahmet | Your T1 starting and return stop. |
| Gülhane | Gülhane | The stop after Sultanahmet towards Kabataş. |
| Sirkeci | Sirkeci | Change between T1 and Marmaray. |
| Eminönü | Eminönü | Leave the tram for the Kadıköy ferry pier. |
| Karaköy | Karaköy | Change to historic Tünel F2. |
| Kabataş | Kabataş | Leave T1 and change to F1. |
| Taksim | Taksim | F1's upper end beside the square. |
| Beyoğlu / Tünel | Beyoğlu / Tünel | F2's upper end near the Tünel end of İstiklal Avenue. |
| Üsküdar | Üsküdar | Marmaray stop immediately after crossing the Bosphorus. |
| Ayrılık Çeşmesi | Ayrılık Çeşmesi | Change between Marmaray and M4. |
| Kadıköy | Kadıköy | The ferry destination and M4 terminus needed here. |
Route one: Sultanahmet to Taksim Square
T1 then F1 — one change and two paid entries in each direction.- At Sultanahmet, choose T1 towards Kabataş. The opposite direction, Bağcılar, takes you away from this outing.
- Stay on to Kabataş. The relevant stops are Gülhane, Sirkeci, Eminönü, Karaköy, Tophane and Fındıklı–Mimar Sinan Ü. before Kabataş.
- Leave the tram and follow F1 Taksim signs. This involves walking and entering the funicular station; a connection on the map is not an in-vehicle transfer.
- Pay at F1's gate and travel to Taksim. Its published ride is about 2½ minutes, plus waiting and reaching the platform.
- Choose an exit towards Taksim Square, then check your destination's location. Some Taksim hotels are in side streets requiring more walking or changes in level.
For İstiklal Avenue: start at the square if you want to explore towards the other end. Check the group's walking capacity before combining the entire avenue with another demanding outing. With small children, choose a rest stop and an end point in advance.
Return: take F1 from Taksim to Kabataş, then T1 towards Bağcılar to Sultanahmet. If you finish near Tünel, consider the alternative below rather than walking back to the square.
The İstiklal alternative: Karaköy and historic Tünel
T1 then F2 — two paid entries. Leave T1 at Karaköy rather than continuing to Kabataş. Walk to F2 Karaköy–Beyoğlu and take Tünel to its upper station near the Tünel end of İstiklal Avenue. This reaches the opposite end from Taksim; the square still requires a walk along the avenue or suitable onward transport. It suits plans beginning or ending near Tünel. Return by F2 to Karaköy, then T1 towards Bağcılar. Check F2's operation before relying on it in the evening: its hours are separate from F1 and T1 and need not extend as late.
Route two: Sultanahmet to Kadıköy by ferry
T1 then ferry — one change and two paid entries.- Take T1 towards Kabataş to Eminönü.
- Use the designated crossings and passages towards the ferry piers. Allow walking and safe crossing time instead of following a crowd without reading the destination.
- Look for a Kadıköy sailing with Şehir Hatları. Match its destination and departure time on the pier display before tapping your card.
- The route may be named Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü. Read the departure column for Eminönü and the arrival for Kadıköy; the route title alone does not identify direction.
- On arrival, locate your market, restaurant or Moda destination. The port gets you to the area, but some places are more than a short walk away.
Many published Eminönü–Kadıköy sailings take about 20 minutes on the water. That is not the time from your hotel: reaching the pier, waiting and walking after arrival can take as long or longer. This option suits a day when seeing the city from the water is part of the visit.
A ferry crossing adds a view from the water to the journey between Istanbul's shores.
For families: arrive with time to board calmly and choose shelter from the wind if needed. With a pushchair, watch the boarding passage and any height difference and follow the crew's instructions. Access depends on the vessel and pier.
Return: choose a sailing to Eminönü to retrace the route. If it arrives at Karaköy, T1 towards Bağcılar also works, with a different walk from the pier. Check your return before becoming absorbed in the market or dinner.
Route three: Sultanahmet to Üsküdar
T1 then Marmaray — one change and two paid entries.- Take T1 towards Kabataş to Sirkeci.
- Follow Marmaray signs. Another service named Sirkeci is not necessarily the train crossing the Bosphorus.
- Allow time for the descent, passages and gates, then choose the Asian-bound platform. The display may say Gebze or a nearer Asian-side terminus; confirm Üsküdar is the next stop.
- At Üsküdar, choose an exit for the waterfront or your saved destination. A short train ride still involves time to leave the station.
This crosses the Bosphorus without waiting for a boat. It reaches Üsküdar station itself; Kuzguncuk, Çamlıca Hill and other places need a separate final-leg plan. Compare your destination's actual entrance with the exit you use.
Return: take Marmaray towards Europe, confirming Sirkeci is next, then T1 towards Bağcılar to Sultanahmet. European-bound trains may display Halkalı or Ataköy, depending on the service. The stop sequence is the key check.
Route four: Kadıköy by train instead of ferry
T1, Marmaray, then M4 — two changes and three paid entries.Reach Marmaray at Sirkeci as above, but continue through Üsküdar to Ayrılık Çeşmesi. Leave Marmaray, follow M4 signs and choose Kadıköy. It is the next station in that direction. The opposite direction heads inland towards Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
At Kadıköy, choose the exit for the market or waterfront. This is an alternative when ferries do not suit, but adds changes. With large bags or a pushchair, compare walks, lifts and waits before assuming rail is easier than a boat.
Return: take M4 from Kadıköy towards Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı and leave at the first station, Ayrılık Çeşmesi. Change to Europe-bound Marmaray, leave at Sirkeci, then take T1 towards Bağcılar.
Save these return directions
| Starting from | Look for | Leave at |
|---|---|---|
| Taksim | F1: Kabataş; then T1: Bağcılar | Sultanahmet |
| Beyoğlu near Tünel | F2: Karaköy; then T1: Bağcılar | Sultanahmet |
| Kadıköy by ferry | Ferry: Eminönü; then T1: Bağcılar | Sultanahmet |
| Üsküdar | Europe-bound Marmaray, with Sirkeci next; then T1: Bağcılar | Sirkeci, then Sultanahmet |
| Kadıköy by rail | M4: Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı; Europe-bound Marmaray; T1: Bağcılar | Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Sirkeci, then Sultanahmet |
Cards, credit and journey costs
Have your İstanbulkart and sufficient credit ready before leaving the hotel and read each gate's response. Here, the number of services equals the number of paid entry stages. A change does not make the next stage free, and using the same card does not guarantee a discount: product and eligibility conditions apply.Original fare review: 7 October 2026; checked again for this edition on 9 October. Metro Istanbul listed the anonymous card's full fare at TRY 46.20, and the full Eminönü–Kadıköy ferry fare was TRY 65.21. These examples are one-way, before any eligible reduction, and exclude card purchase:
| Journey | Calculation | Per-person total |
|---|---|---|
| Sultanahmet–Taksim | T1: 46.20 + F1: 46.20 | TRY 92.40 |
| Sultanahmet–Kadıköy by ferry | T1: 46.20 + ferry: 65.21 | TRY 111.41 |
The published 50% ferry transfer benefit applies to eligible personalised cards within 120 minutes, excluding the specified night sailings. Do not budget an anonymous visitor card on that assumption. Prices can change; separating card purchase from fares prevents confusion.
Marmaray: do not price it automatically at the T1 fare. Check the entry balance requirement and displayed fare, and ask staff whether your card qualifies for any refund before relying on one. Avoid inserting an unverified flat fare into your budget. The Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü ferry route has no distance-difference refund system.
For a group, calculate each paying passenger's journey rather than treating one tap as group payment. Agree which card each person uses and where to meet after the gates, especially before another change.
How much time should you allow?
These are planning estimates from the entrance at Sultanahmet stop to the arrival area, not guaranteed journey times. Add hotel and destination walks and more time for crowds or lifts:| Route | Estimated total | Main variables |
|---|---|---|
| Taksim: T1 + F1 | 30–55 minutes | Tram wait, walking to F1 and leaving for the square. |
| Beyoğlu: T1 + F2 | 25–45 minutes | Finding Tünel's entrance; continuing to Taksim takes additional time. |
| Kadıköy: T1 + ferry | 45–75 minutes | Sailing time and the walk to the pier. |
| Üsküdar: T1 + Marmaray | 25–45 minutes | Sirkeci passages, train wait and exit. |
| Kadıköy: T1 + Marmaray + M4 | 35–60 minutes | Two changes and walking between gates and platforms. |
For each change, usually set aside 5–15 minutes for walking and gates, plus the service wait. Sirkeci or finding a lift may need more. Do not set a restaurant booking or meeting at the moment a train-only estimate ends.
Choosing with a family or pushchair
- For the square and İstiklal: F1 handles the climb from Kabataş. Choose an end point so you need not walk the avenue twice.
- For a relaxed Kadıköy outing: the ferry can be part of the enjoyment, with allowances for waits, sea conditions and boarding access.
- For Üsküdar: Marmaray is a practical crossing, but include passages and lifts rather than train time alone.
- With a pushchair or wheelchair: look for lift signs or ask about the accessible route before entering. A lift's presence does not guarantee it is operating.
- With a larger group: have one adult lead and another check everyone has left. If a vehicle is full, wait together for the next one.
Walking shoes, water and a short break help more than squeezing three distant areas into one day. Plan around the group's slowest traveller and choose the return before children become tired.
Sample days
Taksim and İstiklal: after breakfast, take T1 and F1. Explore from the square down the avenue with time for lunch and a rest. If you finish near Tünel and F2 is running, descend to Karaköy and return by tram. If still near Taksim, use F1.Kadıköy: reach Eminönü in the morning and take a suitable ferry. Make the market and lunch your main activities, adding Moda only if its walk suits the group. Save the return sailing first and keep M4–Marmaray as an alternative.
Üsküdar: cross from Sirkeci by Marmaray and choose an activity near the waterfront. More distant places need extra time and transport; sharing a district name does not make them adjacent.
Evening returns and common mistakes
T1 and F1 publish ordinary operation until midnight, but catching one service does not guarantee the next. Check the final departure from your actual station in your direction, especially for ferries and F2. Near closing time, leave enough for the full change or choose another suitable route.- Starting towards Bağcılar on T1 for Taksim or Eminönü, when the outward direction is Kabataş.
- Entering a ferry pier without confirming Kadıköy, or reading Karaköy's timetable instead of Eminönü's column.
- Treating Üsküdar as next door to Kadıköy's market.
- Taking M4 towards Sabiha Gökçen at Ayrılık Çeşmesi when travelling outward to Kadıköy.
- Confusing F1 to Taksim with F2 to the Tünel end of İstiklal.
- Counting only in-vehicle time or leaving the top-up until the last moment.
Before you set out
Is there a direct tram to Taksim Square?T1 does not reach it. Change at Kabataş to F1. For İstiklal's Tünel end, use Karaköy and F2 instead.
Is rail always better for Kadıköy?
It depends on departures, your destination and acceptable changes. The ferry needs fewer changes on this route; rail is useful when sailing does not suit.
Can I omit the tram stage?
Yes, if your hotel is suitably close to Sirkeci or Eminönü, start at Marmaray or the pier. Check the actual walk, slopes and luggage needs.
What if I miss my stop?
Leave at a safe next stop, read the signs and ask about returning before entering another gate. Do not cross tram tracks or chase closing doors.
