Buying and Topping Up an İstanbulkart as a Visitor
Choose a card, make its credit ready to use, and understand personalisation and transfers

An İstanbulkart lets you travel without buying a fresh ticket each time, but three things are separate: the card purchase price, the credit used for journeys and the benefits its holder qualifies for. Buying a card does not give unlimited travel, and a transfer fare in a tariff does not automatically apply to every visitor.

This guide starts with buying a card at a station, then explains top-ups, travel, budgeting and family use. The examples help you decide how much credit to add instead of leaving a large balance unused. Standard reloadable cards, limited-use tickets and personalised products have different conditions.

1️⃣ 🎫 Which product do you actually need?

Read the product name on the screen or at the sales counter instead of choosing by card colour. The same brand can appear on a general reloadable card, a limited-use ticket, a personalised discount card or a tourist product with different terms.

Your travel patternWhat to look forCheck before paying
Daily travel on several servicesA general reloadable cardCard charge, available credit and top-up methods.
One or very few boardingsA suitable limited-use electronic ticketBoarding allowance, accepted services and coverage of the next leg.
A longer stay with frequent travelCompare a pass with stored-credit faresEligibility, validity, usage allowance and the units different services deduct.
Student or other discount eligibilityA personal product after meeting the requirementsLocal criteria; a student card from your home country alone does not establish eligibility.
A tourist offer or day-based cardA clearly identified product with defined coverageStart of validity, included services and number of days, beyond a brief “unlimited” advertisement.
For a visitor using metro and tram daily, a general reloadable card is usually a useful starting point for comparison. A longer pass for a short visit still needs a cost calculation; a benefit you will not use is not a saving.

2️⃣ 📍 Where to buy and top up

Metro Istanbul says station Biletmatik machines offer cards and top-ups. BELBİM's official channels list service points, machines and İstanbulkart centres. An authorised outlet makes it easier to trace a transaction or obtain help and a receipt.

Every machine may not sell every product at all times. A machine may only top up, lack the product you need or have run out of cards. Ask staff which machine to use instead of repeatedly searching the same screen. For a late arrival, identify an available purchase point at your actual starting location and prepare another accepted payment method.

💡 The card price is different from the fare. Check whether a purchase includes any initial credit or only the card. The current transaction screen is more useful than a price in an old photograph.

3️⃣ 🛒 Buying from a machine, step by step

  1. Start at the main screen. Choose a suitable language if offered, then look for a new-card purchase rather than an existing-card top-up.
  2. Read the product name and price. Make sure it is the type you planned to buy. Read any alternatives before inserting money.
  3. Check payment options. Read accepted cards or banknotes and any change-return instructions. Machines can offer different options.
  4. Complete one transaction. Follow the screen to the end and wait for the card at the designated outlet. A short delay is not a reason to start a second purchase.
  5. Collect the card and receipt. Check the product has been dispensed and keep proof until the top-up and first journey work.
  6. Check the balance. Add credit separately if needed. The purchase charge alone may not cover a boarding.
If the screen is unclear, ask staff before paying. Suitable banknotes or a second bank card can help, but every foreign card is not guaranteed to work at every machine. Check its payment symbols and your bank's response.

4️⃣ 🔋 Confirming a station top-up

Select the top-up operation and place your card where the machine instructs. Check its number or displayed details where clear, then choose an amount or insert payment in the supported way. Leave the card in position until the process finishes and read the new balance.

A simple check: previous balance + net credit added = expected balance before any new journey. If the payment channel charges a published fee, keep that separate from the credit. The total you paid may differ from the amount available for fares.

  • Do not remove the card halfway through the process.
  • Keep the receipt or result if there is a problem.
  • Check the balance again before walking to a distant platform.
  • If payment was taken without a visible increase, ask staff about that transaction before paying a second time.
For a family, finish one card before starting the next, and keep completed cards separate. This small routine prevents balance mix-ups when one person carries several cards.

5️⃣ 📱 Online top-ups: payment and application can be separate stages

BELBİM's current framework agreement explains that an online top-up can first become a loading instruction, before reaching a physical card. Read the card at a suitable connected transaction point, Biletmatik or supported NFC phone using the official app, as the procedure instructs.

Example: your online payment succeeds, but a reader still displays the old balance. Check the request status and whether its instruction needs to be applied before concluding that the money is missing or submitting another top-up.

Keep the physical-card balance separate from a digital-account balance or another app product. Money shown in an account does not prove the card in your hand is ready at the gate. Check the selected card name and identifying digits, then confirm that the credit reached it.

A phone is useful for management when the account, eligibility and connectivity requirements are met. However, avoid making a first app download and registration your only way to travel immediately after arriving. A topped-up physical card remains useful if your battery runs out or you have no internet connection.

6️⃣ 🧾 Useful Turkish words on the screen

TurkishPractical meaning
BakiyeBalance: check enough remains for the intended service and return.
Yükleme / TL yükleAdd money to the selected card or account.
TalimatInstruction: check whether it awaits application to the card.
KişiselleştirmePersonalisation: linking a card under specified identity requirements and terms.
AktarmaTransfer between services; the word alone does not mean free travel.
İadeRefund: eligibility and procedure vary by service and product.
AbonmanPass: check duration, usage allowance, coverage and eligibility.
TamFull fare: useful when reading a visitor's ordinary fare.
These words help you follow the process, but read the actual product screen. Menus and button positions can change.

7️⃣ 🧮 How much credit should you add?

At the original review on 7 October 2026, Metro Istanbul listed a standard full fare of TRY 46.20 and a single-use electronic ticket at TRY 65. These figures apply to the products and services in that tariff, not every train, ferry or airport service. Add the card purchase charge separately.

One person's ordinary boardingsCredit usedSuggested planning allowance
Out and back on one service each way2 × 46.20 = TRY 92.40One extra boarding if plans change or you take the wrong direction.
Two services each way4 × 46.20 = TRY 184.80An extra TRY 46.20 brings the estimate to TRY 231.
Six boardings during a varied day6 × 46.20 = TRY 277.20With one extra boarding, TRY 323.40.
The allowance is a suggestion, not a charge. You may round to an amount the machine supports. If your itinerary includes a ferry, Marmaray or another differently priced service, substitute its actual fare rather than multiplying every leg by 46.20.

Compare the initial outlay: a reloadable card costs its purchase charge plus fares used; limited-use tickets cost the relevant boarding product. The single-boarding difference in the examples is TRY 18.80, but the break-even point also depends on the current card charge, alternative product and accepted services. Read all those prices before calculating it.

8️⃣ 👤 Personalisation: what it changes and what it does not guarantee

Municipal rules attach transfers, distance-based refunds and specified privileges to personalised İstanbulkart eligibility. An anonymous reloadable card does not gain these benefits merely because it can hold credit. Eligibility for discounts, transfers and refunds depends on the card type, personalisation and current tariff conditions.

Buying a card, adding it to an account and qualifying for a discount are different steps. A product may require proof of identity or status, and its current conditions still apply. Do not enter another person's details or use someone else's student card to reduce the fare.

Foreign visitors should budget at full fare unless an official source confirms a specific benefit for their circumstances. Ask an İstanbulkart centre which documents it accepts for any personalisation or identity-linked account service you need. A passport or phone number alone does not establish eligibility for every product.

Keep expectations clear: personalisation may assist a lost-card procedure depending on the card and account, but does not guarantee recovery of every payment or convert an old card into a discount product. Check the actual change before deciding.

9️⃣ 🔄 Three different kinds of transfer or refund

  • Transfer discount: a different fare on a later boarding when card, timing and operator conditions are met. It is not automatically free or available to an anonymous card.
  • Distance-based fare refund: a procedure on specified services, sometimes requiring a designated exit reader. An İade sign does not mean every line returns money.
  • Return of unused stored credit: an issuer's card or account procedure, distinct from refunding part of a journey fare. Check eligibility, procedure and any charges.
For a tram followed by a ferry, budget both full fares unless transfer eligibility is confirmed. Şehir Hatları publishes transfer conditions involving personalisation and timing, with night-service and Princes' Islands exceptions. Do not extend one line's terms to the entire network.

For Marmaray and Metrobüs, check the starting balance requirement and whether your card qualifies for a refund. Enough credit for a tram may not open another service's gate, even if you plan to leave after one station.

1️⃣0️⃣ 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family cards: organise them before looking for savings

A separate card for each fare-paying traveller makes balances and gates easier to manage, especially if the group splits up or some return early. Use a small identifying mark without covering necessary details, and agree who carries each card before reaching the gate.

If you want to use one general card for several people, check the service policy and product first. Personalised or discount cards cannot simply be lent to others, and repeated taps may not share transfer or refund benefits. Calculate costs after establishing what is allowed.

For four full-fare passengers making four ordinary boardings each, the calculation is TRY 739.20 before card purchase charges. This is a budgeting example: check the relevant child rules before including anyone who may qualify for a different fare or free travel.

With children and a pushchair, divide responsibilities: one person prepares the card while another supervises the child and pushchair. Ask staff for the appropriate gate instead of trying to move several people together through a standard closing barrier.

1️⃣1️⃣ ✅ Your first tap and each day's return

Take the card out of your wallet, present it alone and wait for acceptance before entering. Several contactless cards together can confuse the reading. Watch the fare and balance if displayed, then move through calmly.

If the gate stays closed, read its message before tapping again. Check for low credit, an unapplied top-up or a reading problem. Staff can direct a card check instead of an unnecessary new purchase.

Before the evening journey, calculate your return from where you are now, rather than where you started that morning. An added Asian-side visit, changed hotel or ferry alters the calculation. Keep enough for an understood alternative if plans change rather than a large balance left unused after departure.

1️⃣2️⃣ 🔒 Security, lost cards and departure

Use official apps, websites and channels. Do not share an account password or verification code with anyone offering help or a top-up, or publish full card numbers and payment details in a public thread.

If a card is lost or retained by a machine, record the station, visible machine number and time. İstanbulkart directs these enquiries to ALO 153 and explains account-linked card procedures. Recovery of an unlinked anonymous card's balance is not guaranteed, which is another reason to avoid excessive top-ups.

Near the end of a trip, a calculated small top-up is more useful than enough for an additional week. Keep the card and receipts for a future visit or balance enquiry. On returning, check validity and account conditions rather than assuming prices and procedures are unchanged.

1️⃣3️⃣ ❓ Quick questions

  • Does the card purchase price cover a metro journey? Check the actual balance; purchase price and travel credit are separate.
  • Does every change earn a discount? No. An anonymous card does not automatically qualify, and the service and timing also matter.
  • Does successful online payment mean my card is ready immediately? Check for a loading instruction and complete the required reading.
  • Do I need a pass for three days? Compare boardings, product cost and eligibility; duration alone does not justify it.
  • Should I buy another card whenever a tap fails? Read the message and check balance, top-up status and reading first.
  • Does İstanbulkart cover transport throughout Türkiye? Do not assume so. Ankara, İzmir and other cities have their own systems and products.
  • What is the minimum preparation? A suitable card, outward-and-return credit, a nearby top-up location and knowledge of any service-specific procedure.
