Major Airports in Türkiye: Choosing the Right Airport for Your Trip
Türkiye has dozens of domestic and international airports, but most visitors need to compare only a few serving their intended destinations: Istanbul, the Black Sea region, Antalya and Alanya, Cappadocia, İzmir, Fethiye and Marmaris, Bodrum and other popular areas.
This guide explains the main airports, the cities and regions they serve, and the ground-transport questions to consider before booking.
Istanbul's airports
Istanbul Airport — IST
- Code: IST.
- Type: a major domestic and international hub, and Türkiye's largest airport by passenger traffic.
- Useful for:
- European-side accommodation, depending on the exact hotel and route.
- A wide range of long-haul international connections.
- Turkish Airlines' main Istanbul hub operations.
- Location: northwest of the city. Compare the actual hotel transfer rather than assuming it is always farther from or closer to “the centre” than SAW.
- Ground transport:
- Airport coaches, including Havaist.
- M11 and connections with the wider rail network.
- Taxis and prearranged private transfers.
Sabiha Gökçen Airport — SAW
- Code: SAW.
- Type: domestic and international, with extensive low-cost airline services.
- Useful for:
- Asian-side Istanbul accommodation.
- Suitable low-cost routes from Europe and the Gulf, where available on your dates.
- Location: on the Asian side, convenient to consider for Pendik and Kartal and for journeys towards Kadıköy compared with crossing from the European side. Check the hotel's actual distance and connection.
- Ground transport:
- Airport coaches to Taksim and Kadıköy and other available services.
- M4, connected with the Asian-side rail network.
- Taxis or private transfers chosen for your hotel location.
IST or SAW?
For a hotel in European-side areas such as Taksim, Fatih or Beşiktaş, IST is often worth checking first. For Kadıköy, Üsküdar or other Asian-side districts, SAW may suit better, particularly with a good flight offer. Neither is automatically best: compare arrival time and the complete hotel transfer.
The Mediterranean and Muğla coast
Antalya Airport — AYT
- Code: AYT.
- Serves:
- Antalya city.
- Surrounding Mediterranean resorts, including Lara, Konyaaltı and Kemer, with onward transfers.
- Flights:
- Numerous seasonal international services, particularly from Europe.
- Domestic connections, including Istanbul and Ankara; check your date's schedule.
- Getting to your destination:
- Airport buses.
- The airport tram connection, with access depending on your terminal.
- Taxis, private transfers or an arranged hotel transfer.
Gazipaşa–Alanya Airport — GZP
- Code: GZP.
- Serves:
- Alanya and nearby settlements.
- Selected resorts in eastern Antalya province, depending on their position.
- Things to check:
- It generally offers fewer flights than AYT, but is much nearer Alanya.
- Seasonal European flights and available domestic connections vary by date.
Dalaman Airport — DLM
- Code: DLM.
- Useful for:
- Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Göcek.
- Marmaris-area journeys where the onward transfer suits your accommodation.
- Typical use:
- Coastal holidays, especially in the busy summer season.
- Airport buses or private transfers to coastal towns; confirm the stop and final hotel leg.
Milas–Bodrum Airport — BJV
- Code: BJV.
- Serves: Bodrum and the surrounding peninsula's villages and resorts.
- Flights to consider:
- Seasonal international flights from Europe and available services from Arab countries.
- Domestic connections such as Istanbul and Ankara. For İzmir or another city, check whether the specific journey is direct, connecting or unavailable on your dates rather than assuming a permanent route.
The Black Sea region
Trabzon Airport — TZX
- Code: TZX.
- Serves:
- Trabzon city.
- A major arrival point for trips towards Uzungöl, Rize, Ayder and the wider northeast, with separate onward transport.
- Flights:
- Domestic connections including Istanbul, Ankara and other available cities.
- International services from selected Arab countries, some seasonal or less frequent.
- Onward travel:
- Taxis to Trabzon hotels.
- An arranged car or driver for Uzungöl, Ayder and mountain settlements.
- Available buses or local connections towards the centre; check the actual airport stop rather than assuming every dolmuş enters the terminal.
Ordu–Giresun Airport — OGU
- Code: OGU.
- Serves: Ordu and Giresun, on the Black Sea coast west of Trabzon.
- Useful for: beginning or ending a coastal itinerary around Ordu rather than returning to Trabzon.
Also compare Rize–Artvin Airport — RZV if Rize, Ayder or the eastern part of your itinerary is the main destination. It is a separate airport option, not another name for Trabzon. Compare available flights and the onward transfer before making TZX the automatic choice for every northeastern trip.
Ankara, İzmir and Cappadocia
Ankara Esenboğa Airport — ESB
- Code: ESB.
- Serves:
- Ankara, the capital.
- A starting point for onward travel into central Anatolia.
- Flights: a substantial domestic network and selected international routes, with a different range from Istanbul or Antalya.
İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport — ADB
- Code: ADB.
- Serves:
- İzmir city.
- Nearby coastal destinations such as Çeşme and Alaçatı, reached by an onward coach or car.
- Useful for: a western-coast itinerary including İzmir and nearby coastal towns.
Cappadocia's airports — Kayseri and Nevşehir
- Kayseri — ASR:
- The larger gateway, serving Kayseri city as well as Cappadocia itineraries.
- Arrange a suitable shuttle or private transfer to Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos or your actual destination.
- Nevşehir Kapadokya — NAV:
- Geographically closer to some Cappadocia villages.
- Typically fewer flight options than Kayseri; check your dates.
- How to choose:
- Compare airfare, arrival time and the complete accommodation transfer.
- Local transfer companies serve both airports, but confirm your flight and hotel rather than assuming a shared shuttle is automatically available.
Choosing the airport that fits your trip
Identify your main city or region:- Istanbul → IST or SAW.
- Trabzon and Uzungöl → TZX; for Rize and Ayder also compare RZV.
- Antalya and Alanya → AYT or GZP, according to the hotel.
- Fethiye or Marmaris → DLM is usually a useful option to compare.
- Bodrum → BJV.
- Cappadocia → ASR or NAV.
- İzmir and nearby destinations → ADB.
Compare both airfare and arrival time:- Differences between IST and SAW, or AYT and GZP, can materially affect the trip.
- Include hotel-transfer cost and time in the comparison.
Check the transfer before choosing a cheaper flight:- In a hypothetical comparison, saving SAR 50 on the flight but spending SAR 150 more on a taxi costs SAR 100 more overall.
- Ask how you will reach the hotel and whether a bus, metro or hotel transfer fits your arrival.
For a multi-city itinerary:- Consider arriving at one airport, such as IST, and departing from another, such as Antalya, Trabzon or İzmir.
- This can avoid travelling back to your starting point solely to fly home.
Flight timetables and ticket prices
Schedules and fares change with:- The summer or winter season.
- Airlines adding or suspending routes.
- Promotions, discounts and last-minute availability.
Before booking:
This guide explains which airport serves your destination and how to plan the hotel journey. It does not present a fixed fare or permanent flight list. Check airlines and booking channels for the specific ticket and date you need.
Your booking checklist:
Identify the airport serving your destination, confirm its code — IST, SAW, AYT, TZX, ASR or another — and plan the onward bus, metro, taxi or private transfer.
With those details established, you can judge the flight as part of your whole itinerary and avoid discovering after booking that the airport is several hours from the place you intended to visit.
