Lost Apartment Keys or a Faulty Lock in Türkiye: Safety, Locksmiths and Costs
If you lose an apartment key or the lock stops working, first protect people and the entrance and assess whether another person might obtain the key. Coordinate with the landlord or building management when appropriate, and obtain a clear service description and written price before work where possible.
Is it an emergency?
If a child or vulnerable person is trapped inside, or there is a fire or immediate danger, call 112 from safety and give the address, floor and apartment. Do not delay emergency help while searching for a locksmith.
If there is no immediate danger, wait in a safe place and contact a trusted person with a suitable spare. Do not break the door or climb through a window; you could be injured or cause damage.
Assess the lost key and secure the entrance
Consider where the key was lost and whether it was attached to the home address or identifying documents. If you cannot rule out an unauthorised person obtaining a copy, discuss changing the lock cylinder or suitable access method with a professional.
For an electronic key or common-entry card, notify management so it can disable the lost credential if the system permits, and ask about reactivation or replacement. Do not post a key photo or home address publicly.
Choose a locksmith and agree the work
| Before the visit | What to ask | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Service identity | Business name, contact and communication channel | Provider and appointment |
| Price | Call-out, opening, parts and any night charge | A clear total where possible |
| Scope | Can it be opened without damage and does the lock need replacement? | Approval before work |
| After completion | Number of keys, warranty and receipt | Invoice or receipt and component details |
If the price changes after inspection, ask for an explanation before agreeing. An old published price may not apply to your door or time.
Landlord and building management
In a rental, notify the landlord of a lost key or faulty lock, check the lease and the lock’s condition at handover, then agree the work and cost in writing where possible. A lost key alone does not establish one cost rule for every case.
For a common-entry lock or card, coordinate with management before replacing part of a shared system. After work, test opening and locking from both sides with the professional present, and ensure no one is trapped inside.
Keep records and protect information
Keep messages, the quote, receipt, number of new keys and date. Do not label keys with your home address, and place a spare with a trusted person under your own arrangements.
If theft or immediate danger is suspected, avoid confrontation and contact the appropriate authorities; call 112 for an immediate threat. Do not disturb signs of a suspected break-in before receiving instructions.
A short checklist
Frequently asked questions
Does a lost key mean replacing the entire door?
Do not assume so; the work depends on the lock, risk and professional inspection.
Should I pay a quote before knowing what it includes?
Ask about call-out, opening, parts and any additional charges before agreeing.
Does the tenant automatically pay every cost?
A lost key alone does not settle this. Check the cause and contract and discuss it with the landlord.
What if I lose a common-entry card?
Notify building management and ask about disabling it and issuing a replacement.
When should I call 112?
For a fire, immediate danger or a vulnerable person trapped inside; describe the circumstances.
