Bed Bugs and Household Pests in Türkiye: Choosing a Permitted Service

Suspected bed bugs call for identification, containment and a coordinated treatment plan. Booking the cheapest spray without checking the operator, product and follow-up can leave the infestation unresolved. This guide covers the household's journey from first evidence to the service record.

Selected official guidance checked on 26 October 2026. Turkish health authorities govern permissions; US public-health guidance below supplies practical bed-bug precautions, not Turkish licensing or tenancy law.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Confirm what you found

Photograph the insect and note the date, room and exact location. Ask an experienced pest professional to identify it before commissioning treatment. Bites alone do not establish bed bugs: the CDC's identification guidance describes similar-looking bites and other clues such as shed skins, insects in mattress folds and rusty spots. Bed bugs are not evidence of poor housekeeping.

Avoid carrying loose bedding or furniture into unaffected rooms. Notify the landlord and building manager in writing when several flats or shared spaces may be involved. Request an inspection plan; this is coordination, not proof that a particular neighbour caused the problem.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Verify the business and the product separately

For public-health pest control using biocidal products, ask for the business's Biyosidal Ürün Uygulama İzin Belgesi. Çorum Provincial Health Directorate explains both the business-permission requirement and the requirement to use Ministry-permitted products. Check the matching business name, address and permission details with your provincial health directorate if uncertain.

A municipal business licence, tax registration or training certificate alone does not replace this application permission. The Istanbul permitted-workplace list is a local verification starting point, not a national endorsement or proof of availability.

Ask for the product's name, permission number and label. The Istanbul health directorate's product guidance explains label information and warns against agricultural pesticides for this purpose. The target pest and indoor use must fit the label. A product authorisation does not authorise every business using it.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Agree a written treatment plan

Ask the operator to state the identified pest, inspected rooms, proposed methods, preparation, expected visits and how success will be assessed. A general cockroach spray is not automatically a bed-bug treatment plan. Compare the same scope when comparing quotations.

Record the total price, invoice details, cancellation terms, follow-up charges and the precise meaning of any guarantee. Ask who handles adjacent-flat or shared-area inspection where needed. Do not accept a guarantee as permission to ignore continuing evidence.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Prepare without spreading the infestation

Use the operator's written instructions for the actual method. EPA preparation guidance supports careful containment, sealed transport of textiles and keeping cleaned items protected. Do not move untreated belongings into an unaffected room or communal corridor.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Confirm access, rooms to be inspected and a reachable contact for questions before the visit.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Tell the operator about children, pregnancy, respiratory concerns, pets and aquariums; agree the required arrangements before any product is applied.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Obtain specific written instructions for food, utensils, bedding, toys and pet equipment. Follow the product label and operator's method-specific directions.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Bag affected textiles before carrying them; arrange suitable laundering/drying for items that tolerate it, and protect cleaned items from reinfestation.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Reduce clutter carefully and provide access to hiding places. If instructed to vacuum, seal the collected waste and dispose of it safely outside.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Get written departure, ventilation, re-entry and cleaning instructions. Arrange somewhere suitable for occupants and animals if temporary absence is required.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Re-entry and follow-up are part of the job

There is no single safe return time for all products or methods. Return only under the applicable label and operator's instructions; smell disappearing is not a clearance test. Ask which surfaces may be cleaned and when, and which treated areas must remain undisturbed. Never add another chemical or repeat treatment yourself to speed the result.

Keep the treatment report with the date, rooms, product details, instructions, invoice and next inspection. Record fresh sightings with dates and locations. EPA's control guidance explains that bed-bug work can require repeated steps and continued monitoring; one quiet night does not establish elimination. Agree when to report activity and when the operator will reassess, rather than inventing a universal repeat-treatment interval.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Coordinate costs and unresolved problems

Keep the initial evidence, handover record, notices, inspection findings and agreed quotation. In rented housing, who ultimately pays depends on the cause, evidence, responsibilities and applicable agreement; neither discovering pests after moving in nor ordering treatment establishes the other party's liability. Agree who commissions and initially pays before a non-emergency visit.

For unresolved service performance, send the firm a written account and request the agreed remedy. For suspected unauthorised biocidal work or a questionable product, contact the provincial health directorate with business/product details and records. A permission enquiry does not resolve a tenancy payment dispute. Seek appropriate advice before deducting costs from rent.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Questions before booking

Must I throw away the mattress?
Not automatically. Ask the inspecting professional whether it can be treated or protected. Do not place an infested item where someone may take it without warning.

May I mix products or use an agricultural pesticide indoors?
No. Do not improvise doses, mixtures or fumigation. Use only the appropriate permitted product and authorised application under its label.

Does a municipal licence establish the required permission?
It does not replace the biocidal application permission. Verify the business and product separately with the relevant health authority.

Will the municipality treat inside my flat for free?
Ask your municipality about its actual service boundaries and booking conditions. Do not assume public-area pest control includes every private dwelling.

How do I know the treatment worked?
Use the agreed inspection and monitoring plan, dated evidence and professional reassessment. A guarantee, faded smell or absence of new bites alone is insufficient.
