White shores, conservation rules and Akçaköy's lavender
Lake Salda lies in Yeşilova district, Burdur province. Deep-blue water, white shores and surrounding mountains and forests have made it one of Türkiye's best-known natural lakes for photography.
Salda is a highly sensitive ecosystem, with protected shoreline areas where walking, swimming or direct access to white formations is restricted. Access boundaries, swimming instructions and facilities depend on conservation decisions and seasonal arrangements. Follow the signs in place, even when older photographs show people in areas now closed.
Pale mineral formations give parts of the shore their striking white appearance. Water colours range from turquoise near the edge to darker blue at greater depth.
The lake is also known for its geology and microbial and mineral formations. Touching deposits, removing material or walking across protected areas can cause damage that is difficult to reverse.
The white shoreline is not ordinary marine beach sand. In sensitive locations, sitting directly on the formations or placing towels and chairs on them is prohibited.
Beyaz Adalar, the “White Islands” area, became one of Salda's most photographed places. Heavy visitor pressure led to strict protection measures, including closure of the protected shore and adjoining water to public entry.
View and photograph the area from designated paths and stopping points. Do not descend onto closed white formations or enter the water in front of them.
Respect barriers and warning signs.
Keep off closed white formations.
Do not remove sand, rocks or deposits.
Avoid contaminating the water with creams or oils.
Take all rubbish away.
Check permissions before using a drone.
These measures protect the lake's ecosystem and must be followed even when seeking a photograph.
Several areas around Salda differ in their facilities and rules on swimming and camping:
- Beyaz Adalar: Viewing and photography from designated places under strict conservation rules.
- The public beach near Yeşilova: Generally more facilities, seating areas and easier access; check which areas are open.
- Doğanbaba Beach: A comparatively quiet natural setting, with seasonal variation in services.
- Higher viewpoints: Panoramic photography without approaching the shore.
Entrance names may vary and individual facilities can close temporarily. Follow official directions on arrival.
Only swim where the authorities currently permit it. In places, depth increases quickly; cold water, currents and sudden winds also require caution.
- Use only areas specifically open for swimming.
- Stay close to the shore even when the surface looks calm.
- Supervise children continuously.
- Avoid swimming when wind increases or the weather changes.
- Do not assume lifeguards are present everywhere.
- Wear suitable footwear where the ground is slippery or stony.
Treat Salda as a deep natural lake with an uneven bed. Check local instructions and choose a designated supervised swimming area when one is operating.
Yeşilova is a short distance from the lake, with restaurants, shops, fuel stations and a limited range of accommodation. It is a practical place to buy supplies or eat before heading to the shore.
The town has a quiet agricultural character and a compact centre. Staying nearby makes it easier to see the lake in the morning and before sunset, outside the main day-trip hours.
Book ahead for summer and holiday periods: accommodation around the lake is limited relative to demand.
Akçaköy, within Yeşilova district, is known for lavender cultivation and rural tourism. During the flowering season, it can be combined with Lake Salda.
Flowering usually begins around late June, with strong colour during July before harvesting. Actual timing changes with each year's temperatures and rainfall.
Check flowering conditions before travelling to the village.
Ask the owners' permission before entering fields.
Follow paths to avoid damaging plants.
Buy produce from local growers and shops.
Watch for bees among the flowers.
Some fields are away from the main road, and individual farms may charge a small entrance or photography fee.
Water colours often appear strongest under a high sun and clear sky. Morning and sunset offer softer light and attractive mountain views.
Cloud and wind alter the lake's appearance, so it will not always match the turquoise tones seen in promotional photographs.
Early morning for fewer visitors.
Midday for contrasting water colours.
Before sunset for mountains and sky.
Higher viewpoints for panoramas.
Camp only at designated sites that are currently authorised. Conservation measures and forest-fire risk can bring seasonal restrictions. An empty-looking stretch of shore does not grant permission to pitch a tent or light a fire.
Small hotels, guesthouses and campsites are found around the lake and Yeşilova, with varying service levels. Before booking, confirm toilets, electricity, parking, food arrangements and the site's fire rules.
Salda lies south-west of Burdur and can be reached by road from Burdur, Denizli or Antalya. A car is the most practical way to travel between lake entrances, Yeşilova and Akçaköy.
Keep vehicles out of protected areas.
Use official car parks.
Refuel in Yeşilova before exploring.
Avoid unfamiliar rural roads at night.
Save the locations of entrances before arrival.
There is no continuous road following the water's edge all the way around. Moving between some locations requires returning to the main roads.
Begin in the morning at a high viewpoint overlooking the lake.
View Beyaz Adalar from permitted paths.
Continue to a public beach currently open to visitors.
Have lunch in Yeşilova.
Visit Akçaköy during lavender season.
Return to a lakeside viewpoint for sunset.
- May and June: Generally milder conditions and relatively green surroundings.
- July: Lavender season and the busy summer visitor period.
- August: Lake visits remain popular, with more heat and crowds.
- September and October: A quieter atmosphere suited to photography.
- Winter: Very quiet, cold weather, with possible snow and ice.
- Follow current conservation instructions rather than older photographs.
- Enter the water only in areas where it is permitted.
- Leave all material on the white shores where it belongs.
- Carry water, sunscreen and a hat in summer.
- Expect busy weekends.
- Check the lavender season before visiting Akçaköy.
Lake Salda offers some of the Lakes Region's most striking natural scenery. Its beauty depends on a fragile environment and strict observance of conservation rules.
The lake, Yeşilova and Akçaköy's lavender can be combined in one day by choosing the right season, using official entrances and respecting closed areas.
