Yeşilada, Can Ada, Altınkum, the castle and lakeside life
Set among Isparta's mountains, Eğirdir is one of Türkiye's largest freshwater lakes and a particularly attractive Lakes Region destination. A visit combines blue water, mountains, small islands, beaches and restaurants serving lake fish.
Eğirdir town stands on the southern shore, approximately 34 kilometres from Isparta city, making it suitable for a day trip or a quiet overnight stay.
Sunlight and weather change the water's appearance, from clear blue to greenish or grey tones under cloud or at sunset.
Mountains surround the lake on several sides, with clear views of their summits in good weather. Early morning and sunset are rewarding times for walking, photography and a quieter waterfront.
Like other inland Turkish lakes, Eğirdir faces falling water levels and pressure from drought and agricultural water use. Respect protected areas, keep shores clean and avoid disturbing sensitive habitats.
Central Eğirdir extends beside the lake, with restaurants, cafés, small hotels and local shops. The waterfront, castle and old market streets can be explored on foot.
The town is generally quieter than major coastal resorts, although summer holidays and weekends bring more activity. Spring and autumn often provide calmer conditions for walking and photography.
Near the centre, surviving parts of Eğirdir Castle reflect several historical periods. The structure is incomplete, but its walls and position help explain the town's defensive role and links between Anatolia and the lakes.
Combine it with a short walk through nearby older streets, mosques and markets. It generally needs little time and adds a historical element to an outing otherwise centred on nature.
Yeşilada, meaning “Green Island”, is one of Eğirdir's best-known visitor areas. A causeway connects it to the mainland, so no boat is needed.
Older houses, small guesthouses, fish restaurants and lakeside paths create an appealing setting. Staying here suits visitors seeking quieter surroundings and sunrise or sunset views away from the centre.
Much of the island can be explored on foot, with stops at waterfront cafés and restaurants. Early morning and the period before sunset are especially pleasant when road and tour-coach traffic is lighter.
Can Ada lies between the town centre and Yeşilada, connected by the same road. Green spaces and seating areas make it a peaceful place to look over the lake and take photographs.
It fits easily into a Yeşilada walk. Facilities vary with season and maintenance, so bring water rather than assuming every service operates year-round.
Altınkum, close to the town centre, is a familiar summer beach for swimming and relaxing. Sand and relatively shallow water in some parts attract families.
The lake remains a natural body of water with variable supervision. Check current water-quality information, weather and local instructions before swimming. Keep close to the shore and avoid entering when wind or conditions deteriorate.
Swim only in areas currently authorised.
Relax or picnic near the beach where permitted.
Photograph sunset and the mountains.
Cycle on suitable nearby roads.
Walk beside the lake and connected islands.
Enquire about licensed fishing and boating activities.
Sections of the long-distance St Paul Trail pass near Eğirdir, linking villages, mountains, forests and lake viewpoints.
Longer sections require appropriate equipment and route knowledge. Choose a clearly defined short walk or a local guide, especially with changing weather or weak mobile reception.
Surrounding uplands appeal to walkers, campers and photographers, but some areas lack services or reliable water sources. Plan accordingly.
Eğirdir and Yeşilada restaurants are known for lake fish alongside Turkish dishes, salads and meze. Species available vary with season and fishing regulations.
Seasonal grilled or fried lake fish.
Local salads and meze.
Eğirdir apples and apple products.
Home-style food in family restaurants.
Turkish tea overlooking the water.
Ask about the fish species, price and charging method before ordering, especially when priced by weight.
Small hotels, family guesthouses and apartments are found in the centre and on Yeşilada. The island offers proximity to the water and a quieter atmosphere; central Eğirdir is convenient for markets and transport.
Book ahead for summer holidays and weekends. Confirm parking, heating or air conditioning and the actual room view: descriptions of a “lake view” differ between properties.
Cars and local buses link Isparta and Eğirdir. The journey generally takes approximately 40–50 minutes, depending on traffic and your exact route.
A car is most useful for other shores and nearby villages.
Public transport connects Isparta with central Eğirdir; confirm current services.
The centre, Can Ada and Yeşilada can be explored on foot in suitable weather.
Take care with winter fog and ice.
Refuel before taking remote mountain roads.

- Summer: The principal beach season, with swimming subject to current permission and more visitors.
- Autumn: A quieter atmosphere, seasonal colours and the apple harvest.

Have breakfast in the centre or on the waterfront.
See Eğirdir Castle and nearby streets.
Pass through Can Ada to Yeşilada.
Have lunch at a fish restaurant.
Visit Altınkum in summer, subject to local access conditions.
Return to Yeşilada or the waterfront for sunset.
- Check current beach conditions and water quality before swimming.
- Leave no rubbish on the shores or in picnic areas.
- Confirm boat trips and water activities outside summer.
- Bring a light jacket: evenings can be cool even in summer.
- Drive slowly on narrow lakeside roads.
- Take water, suitable equipment and a clear route plan for longer walks.
Eğirdir's appeal lies in simple pleasures: walking, small connected islands, mountain views and meals beside the water in generally quieter surroundings.
A day can cover the centre, castle, Can Ada, Yeşilada and Altınkum. An overnight stay gives more time for sunset, a quiet morning and an unhurried exploration of nearby nature.
