🗣️ Learning Turkish: A Practical Guide

Turkish can make everyday life, study and work in Türkiye easier. This guide was originally written for 2025; its course-price estimates are historical and should not be used as current quotations. The learning advice and provider information have been reviewed on 8 October 2026.

Why learn Turkish?
  • Handle everyday situations and official appointments more confidently.
  • Meet the language requirements of suitable university programmes and expand work opportunities where you are legally eligible.
  • Understand academic texts and subject terminology.
  • Build friendships and take part in local life.

Language levels and certificates
StageCEFR levelsWhat the levels broadly describe
BeginnerA1–A2Basic language and simple everyday communication
Independent userB1–B2Increasing ability to discuss familiar and more complex topics
Proficient userC1–C2Advanced comprehension and flexible language use; neither level guarantees perfect fluency in every situation
TÖMER is used in the names of language teaching centres, not one universal certificate or examination. Universities decide which Turkish evidence and levels they accept. Ankara University TÖMER's courses lead up to C1; Yunus Emre Institute's TYS awards B2 or C1 proficiency certificates. Check your receiving university's rules before enrolling or paying for an exam.

Language centres to compare
  • Ankara University TÖMER: an established university language centre offering Turkish courses and proficiency assessment.
  • Yunus Emre Institute: Turkish teaching through cultural centres, online learning and the TYS examination.
  • Istanbul University Language Centre: Turkish courses for international learners, with current options including face-to-face and online formats.
  • Dilmer, Istanbul: a private provider included in the original guide. Confirm current levels, timetable, fees and certificate acceptance directly before booking.
  • Bahçeşehir University TÜRKMER: the university's Turkish and foreign languages centre; check which courses are open to your student category.
This is a comparison list, not a ranking. A provider's reputation does not mean its certificate is accepted for every academic purpose.

Online resources
  • Tureng: an English–Turkish dictionary for checking meanings and usage.
  • Duolingo: short practice activities that can supplement a broader study plan.
  • Busuu: another language-learning option; check which Turkish features are available under its current plan.
  • Educational YouTube channels: examples named in the original guide include Learn Turkish Easily and TurkishClass101. Check the lesson level and quality before relying on a series.
  • Yunus Emre Institute's Turkish learning portal: structured self-study resources and video lessons. The institute also advertises free online course opportunities; availability and enrolment conditions vary by intake.
Commercial apps and channels can include both free and paid features. These resources support learning; they do not automatically provide university-recognised proficiency evidence.

Historical 2025 course estimates
The figures below come from the original 2025 guide and have not been verified as actual tariffs. They are not current prices or a reliable 2026 budget.
Original course categoryOriginal estimate in TRYWhat to confirm
One-month course4,000–7,000City, provider and teaching hours
Three-month intensive course9,000–15,000Level coverage and assessment

As a dated comparison, Istanbul University's page updated in April 2026 lists EUR 450, payable in Turkish lira, for one face-to-face level lasting seven weeks and 175 lessons. This is one institution's published example, not a national average. Request the current full quote, including books and examination charges.

Build steady progress
  • Practise speaking regularly, even with simple phrases.
  • Use Turkish radio, programmes and learner audio to reinforce vocabulary.
  • Try learning ten useful words a day and reviewing them weekly; adjust the target to what you can retain.
  • Record yourself reading and compare your pronunciation with reliable audio.
  • Join a suitable university or online practice group.

Turkish requirements at university
Turkish-taught programmes normally require accepted proficiency evidence before degree classes, or language preparation where provided. The minimum level and accepted issuer depend on the university and programme; do not assume B2 is enough. Preparation can take place at a university centre and is not always a fixed one-year TÖMER course.
