Death of a Foreign National in Türkiye: Death Documents, Burial and Repatriation

When a relative dies in Türkiye, the family first needs the death documented and the relevant authorities contacted, then chooses burial in Türkiye or transport abroad. The process depends on the place and circumstances of death, nationality and destination; clarify the steps before committing to transport or translation costs.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Who should you contact first?

CircumstanceFirst stepFollow-up
Death in hospitalContact hospital administration about documentation and releaseAsk about the death document and burial or transport authority
Death outside a health facilityIf life or the condition is uncertain call emergency services on 112; otherwise contact the local health authority responsible for documenting deathsDo not move the body before the competent authority directs you
Sudden, unclear or suspicious deathNotify emergency services or police and follow official instructionsThe prosecutor and forensic service may intervene and permission may be needed before release

Inform relatives, the deceased’s consulate and any insurer. Keep agency names and reference numbers; do not assume the consulate pays the costs.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Death documents and registration

Ask the authority documenting the death about the report or document issued, how the event is registered and which office provides the copy you need. Check the name and spelling, nationality, date of birth, passport number and date of death before using it, and request correction from the responsible office if necessary.

A doctor’s or hospital report, burial permit and registration certificate do not necessarily serve the same purpose. If you need a multilingual document such as Formül C, ask the civil registry whether it can issue one for the foreign national’s case, then ask the receiving authority abroad about acceptance, translation and authentication.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Burial in Türkiye

Contact the municipality or cemetery department responsible for the burial location, or a funeral provider, and ask about the burial permit, cemetery arrangements, documents and charges. Cemetery arrangements, ceremonies and religious or cultural needs vary by location; confirm them before agreeing services.

If the body will move to another municipality, ask in advance about transport permission and health arrangements. In a judicial case wait for authorization from the competent authority, and do not promise a burial date before release is confirmed.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Transporting the body abroad

Contact the deceased’s consulate, authorities in the destination country, and an appropriate or licensed international funeral transport provider. Ask them for a consistent document list, route and requirements of the receiving country and airline before booking. Depending on the case and destination, these may include a death document, transport or removal permission, and health or body-preparation documentation.

Confirm who arranges collection in Türkiye and at the destination, coffin, cooling and cargo requirements, release and transit timing and charges. Do not assume Formül C, a single authentication or embalming is required by every country; confirm the list in writing with the competent authorities.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Costs, insurance and belongings

Contact the insurer before contracting where possible. Ask in writing about burial or transport coverage, limits, exclusions, prior approval and the documents and invoices needed for a claim. Compare funeral-service quotes and check whether coffin, preparation, transport, storage, translation and fees are included; keep receipts.

Ask the hospital, police or prosecutor, as applicable, how belongings are inventoried and released and what evidence is required; some items may be held for an investigation. Notifying banks, proving heir status and settling the estate are separate subsequent matters, and a death certificate alone does not authorize withdrawal from the deceased’s account.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Practical checklist for the family

⁦1️⃣⁩ Confirm the authority documenting the death, location of the body and case reference, and notify the consulate and insurer.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Gather the deceased’s identity document and passport if available, the applicant’s identity and any proof of relationship requested.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Check the death document’s details and the registration and copy-issuing process.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Choose burial or transport after checking any judicial authorization needed and the body’s release date.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Obtain a written document, requirements and cost list from the municipality or transport provider, consulate and receiving authority as applicable.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Keep copies and receipts, then follow up on belongings and notify banks and other institutions as the family’s circumstances require.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Frequently asked questions

Does the consulate pay every expense?
Do not assume so; ask about the assistance available and check the insurance policy before committing to costs.

Can the body always be transported immediately?
Forensic procedures, prosecutor approval and health and transport documents may first be necessary.

Is the death certificate alone enough for burial or transport?
Additional permits and documents may be necessary, depending on the circumstances, location and destination.

Is Formül C automatically issued for every foreign national?
Check with the civil registry and receiving authority; do not assume availability or acceptance in every case.

Does a death certificate authorize an heir to withdraw funds?
Not by itself; the bank requires proof of status and other documents appropriate to the case.
