Kayseri’s covered bazaar reveals a different side of the city: passages, shops and a network of markets within its historic fabric, rather than shopping centre floors. Shops still sell local foods and handicrafts, making it a place to seek a gift or product associated with the city. Make a short list beforehand, then take time to compare and inspect goods instead of buying from the first shopfront.

🏛️ Understanding the place
The bazaar developed through several historical phases and was rebuilt after a major fire; it contains markets with different names. Kapalı Çarşı can therefore refer to an entire area rather than a particular shop. Save a clear starting point and ask your intended destination for its passage name or nearest entrance to reduce time spent searching between shops.

🍽️ Buying local products
When choosing food, ask about ingredients, packing date, expiry and storage during your journey. Request sealed packaging and an invoice showing the product, weight and price. An item requiring refrigeration is not a gift that can spend hours in a suitcase. Check your destination country’s food import requirements with the relevant authority before buying a large quantity to take home.

🎁 Crafts and gifts
For textiles and handmade pieces, ask about the material and place of manufacture, then inspect edges, base or stitching as appropriate. Compare pieces of similar size and quality: one may cost more because it is larger or made from a different material. Descriptions such as “old” or “heritage” do not establish archaeological authenticity; ask for a clear explanation if the item’s value depends on such a claim.

🧭 A manageable, clearly planned walk
Start with one passage and save your return point on your phone, then explore further if it suits your interests. Leave heavy purchases until the end and take a break before moving to other sights. With children, agree on a recognisable meeting place; “at the door” alone is insufficient when an area has several entrances.

💳 Invoices and opening hours
Ask whether cards are accepted before preparing a large order, and check whether the price is per item, kilogram or set. Keep the shop’s name and invoice, and agree on any exchange arrangements before paying. Shops do not necessarily follow one timetable, so contact your chosen business on the visiting day. The dated 2017 photographs show the actual bazaar, but some shopfronts and details may differ today.
