Choose a shopping experience that fits your day
Istanbul offers a wide choice of shopping: historic lanes for gifts, local food shops, fashion streets and boutiques, and malls bringing varied stores together. Start with what you want to buy and where you are staying, then choose somewhere easy to include in your itinerary.
For variety, spread your shopping between a bazaar, a shopping street and a mall during the trip. Give each visit a clear purpose so there is still time to rest and see the sights that interest you.
Where to start looking
| Your interest | Places to start | Type of visit |
|---|
| Carpets, crafts and gifts | Grand Bazaar and Arasta Bazaar | Browse and compare materials |
| Spices and sweets | Spice Bazaar | Choose flavours and pack sizes |
| Local food | Kadıköy Market | Combine shopping with a meal |
| Clothing and design | Nişantaşı and Bağdat Avenue | Browse boutiques and try items |
| A variety of stores | A mall near your planned route | Shopping and a break in one place |

Useful routes to start with

In the historic district, T1 serves Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı for the Grand Bazaar, Eminönü for the Spice Bazaar area and Sultanahmet for the Arasta area. Choose the station according to your destination to avoid starting far away.

For Nişantaşı, take M2 to Osmanbey and continue on foot to the boutique’s address. On the Asian side, Kadıköy station on M4 serves central Kadıköy and its local market.

Bağdat Avenue is long, so choose your section around a shop or an area such as Suadiye. Suadiye station on Marmaray is one option for reaching that area, with a walk to complete the journey.

Choosing a mall

Compare ease of access with the stores you need. Having the branch you want matters more than travelling far simply because a centre is famous.

To combine shopping with children’s entertainment, check the suitable activity, admission ages and whether it is operating before leaving. Confirm the services you need directly with the mall’s website.

Shops and services may keep different hours. Check your chosen destination rather than applying one timetable to the whole city.

Three habits for a better visit

Compare the same product’s material, size and ingredients, then read the conditions of any discount on your chosen item.

In shops where bargaining is accepted, agree calmly on the final price and what it includes. Ask about payment methods before completing your choice.

Keep receipts, arrange a family meeting point, and buy breakable items and temperature-sensitive foods towards the end of the day. These steps make shopping easier and help you return with suitable purchases.
