A practical comparison for an independent store operating from Türkiye
Choose the platform for your products and workload; general illustrative image. — General illustrative photo.
After selecting an independent store as your sales channel, choose its platform. Compare business requirements with a service you can operate within your budget and team capacity, rather than comparing logos. Shopify, WooCommerce and local solutions differ in hosting, development and contractual responsibilities; payments, invoicing and shipping require separate verification.
This guide supports system selection, while the building guides explain implementation. 'Integration' does not mean account approval or availability of every provider feature. Request a dated quotation and test essential requirements.
Write requirements before requesting quotations
Define products, variants, catalog size, languages, delivery destinations and other channels. Record order-management headcount and expertise and accounting and warehouse needs. Unused features do not justify high costs, while missing essentials such as size-specific stock may undermine fulfillment.
Divide requirements into launch essentials, later needs and optional improvements. Do not make every idea an immediate condition; lengthy lists may drive custom development before market testing. Ask providers to distinguish built-in features, apps and custom work.
Select two products representing catalog complexity and an order representing the customer journey. Use them in every demonstration for fair comparison. An attractive demonstration with simple products does not prove support for colors, sizes and different shipping needs.
| Requirement | Seller need example | Acceptance evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Variants with separate stock | Color and size test |
| Payments | Provider accepting a business in Türkiye | Approval, integration and testing |
| Invoicing | Route appropriate to the taxpayer | Accountant and document review |
| Shipping | Service for launch destinations | Correct total for each address |
| Language | Arabic and Turkish interface | Phone and message review |
| Exit | Usable data exports | File and import test |
Understand who manages the technical infrastructure
A hosted platform manages parts of the infrastructure under its contract, while you remain responsible for configuration, content, apps and operations. WooCommerce requires WordPress, hosting, updates and compatibility monitoring, whether managed internally or outsourced. Having a developer does not remove the need to know who owns accounts and responds to failures.
A local solution may bundle several tools, but 'integrated' needs detail. Request service names, limits, versions and included costs. A connection may merely export a file when you need automatic stock updates or invoicing at a defined status.
Document security, permissions, backups and support responsibilities. Do not assume hosting prevents employee or app errors, or self-hosting is unsuitable for small stores. Suitability depends on what you can manage and who will keep it working.
Assess Shopify for Turkish circumstances
Shopify offers hosted stores, apps and settings, but its store platform and Shopify Payments are separate. When checked on October 11, 2026, Türkiye did not appear in Shopify Payments' supported-country list. This does not mean the Shopify platform is unavailable; it requires assessment of a suitable third-party provider.
iyzico documents an official Shopify connection route, but guidance does not guarantee acceptance of your business or required cards and currencies. Check providers displayed for your account, their documents and contracts, then test payments and refunds. Do not enter an incorrect business country to obtain another service.
Also examine Shopify third-party transaction fees alongside provider pricing according to plan, location and method. Obtain current total charges rather than counting only provider commission. Direct or external checkout differences may affect the experience and need phone testing.
Assess WooCommerce through maintenance capacity
WooCommerce is a WordPress store plugin for products, orders and integrations. Its core does not make the store free: include hosting, domain, theme, services, extensions, development and maintenance. Comparing a hosted-platform subscription with a plugin price alone misses the cost of a complete operating system.
WooCommerce documentation stresses current backups, a staging environment before updates and workflow checks afterward. Ask who updates WordPress, themes, payment gateways, invoice and shipping plugins and handles urgent security fixes. Avoiding updates indefinitely to prevent conflicts is not a sound operating plan.
Flexibility helps when you know what to customize and who maintains it. Request a limited reliable extension list, licenses in the business's name and a change log. More extensions do not mean more sales; some duplicate functions, slow pages or alter order statuses requiring control.

Request a specific quotation for local solutions
Include local solutions when you need support, invoicing and shipping suited to Türkiye. Providers such as ikas have app stores, but check country, plan and each app separately. An international page listing payment or shipping tools does not establish functionality for a Turkish account or inclusion in your quotation.
Request a distinction between native features, external apps and partner services. Identify who contracts with payment gateways and carriers, opens tickets for synchronization failures and pays for later modifications. Turkish-language support helps but does not replace clear specifications and suitable response times.
Have daily users test product, order and export dashboards rather than only watching provider staff perform everything quickly. Ask user, product, channel and customization limits and subscription-exit conditions, retaining the quotation and validity date.
Test the integration chain rather than the app name
Orders move through products, carts, payments, order statuses, invoices, stock and shipping. One failed link may leave paid orders unfulfilled or invoices issued for canceled orders. Map the chain and each transition's trigger, then request a test proving support for your circumstances.
'Invoice integration' requires knowing the correct document, issuance and cancellation timing and return route. A PDF does not create tax compliance. 'Shipping' needs actual destinations, dimensions, service, shipping documents and tracking rather than merely a customer-facing checkbox.
Keep a clear owner, supported version and test documentation for every connection. Include additional intermediaries in cost, support and data maps. Multiple parties are not inherently problematic, but unclear responsibility prolongs repairs.
| Link | Question for the provider | Decisive test |
|---|---|---|
| Payments | Who accepts the business and how is the result returned? | Success, decline and order status |
| Invoicing | Which document and when? | Case-appropriate issuance and cancellation |
| Stock | What is the authoritative quantity source? | Last item and two simultaneous orders |
| Shipping | How are rates and carriers selected? | Address, parcel and actual service |
| Support | Who investigates faults between two parties? | One coordinated ticket and evidence |
Calculate annual costs using matching assumptions
Record setup, subscriptions, support, extensions, custom work and transaction fees, separating one-off and recurring payments. Use the same order, revenue and currency scenario for every offer. An omitted item is not free; mark it 'unresolved' until confirmed.
This table is entirely hypothetical, not Shopify, WooCommerce or local-provider prices. Values use a common financial basis excluding taxes and financing and assume one operating volume. The point is that the lowest subscription need not mean the lowest total cost.
Offer A totals thirty-nine thousand lira, B forty-six thousand and C thirty-eight thousand five hundred. B exceeds A by seven thousand, but suitability and service quality also matter. Include internal staff time where hours and their value can be documented.
| Hypothetical annual item | Offer A | Offer B | Offer C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription or hosting | 12,000 | 6,000 | 18,000 |
| Setup and customization | 8,000 | 14,000 | 4,000 |
| Extensions and services | 6,000 | 8,000 | 3,000 |
| Support and maintenance | 4,000 | 12,000 | 6,000 |
| Assumed transactions | 9,000 | 6,000 | 7,500 |
| Total | 39,000 | 46,000 | 38,500 |
Check language and daily experience
Test Arabic and Turkish across products, menus, carts, policies and order messages rather than only the homepage title. Check text direction alongside sizes, currencies and order identifiers and switching languages after adding items. Translating a theme does not translate every app or external-gateway message.
Separate display currency from charge, collection and bank-settlement currencies. Do not request 'multiple currencies' without specifying customer needs and provider acceptance. For a domestic launch, test clear prices and totals in the appropriate currency, then add other cases after independent verification.
Have operations staff prepare orders, send tracking, find invoices and process cancellations. Time taken is part of suitability. If every action needs a developer, calculate its daily operational effect rather than treating it merely as attractive customization.

Preserve account ownership and understand data routes
Register domains, platform accounts, licenses and email through business-controlled accounts, defining employee and partner permissions. Do not leave sole access with designers or departed staff's telephone numbers. Use multifactor authentication where available and arrange recovery and permission changes when work ends.
Ask which data exports are available and in what formats: products, variants, images, customers, orders and discounts. A product export is not a complete restorable backup. WooCommerce documents a product CSV tool, while other data and services require their own routes.
Establish where customer data is processed, who accesses it and what passes to apps and providers. Choosing a foreign tool does not itself settle privacy or transfer duties. Inventory services and review applicable bases and procedures before granting broad access.

Run acceptance tests before a large commitment
Specify written cases before demonstrations: multivariant products, supported and unsupported addresses, successful and declined payments, cancellation and refund, stock updates and exports. Use a suitable environment, separating test messages and parcels from real customers.
Record outcomes, evidence and repair owners, then retest affected components. 'We will add it soon' does not replace a launch-day requirement. If an essential feature is missing, exclude the offer or deliberately change initial scope.
Review contracts, renewal, cancellation, domain and data transfer and extra-work costs. Commit appropriately for the project stage without assuming all contracts permit free cancellation. A strong offer answers these details clearly and proves required workflows.
| Acceptance test | Required outcome | Retained evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Variant and stock | Correct price, quantity and image | Test order |
| Payments and declines | Controlled order status | Transaction reference |
| Invoice and return | Appropriate procedure for the case | Document and log |
| Shipping and address | Correct service and total | Two-destination test |
| Export and restoration | Understandable usable data | File and separate test |

Plan migration even if not moving now
Keep product profiles, images, codes and documents outside complete dependence on one provider. Plan potential migration of domains, links, open orders and stock, identifying necessary conversions and elements that cannot transfer identically. Store design does not automatically migrate with a product file.
For an actual move, begin with a test copy and compare product, variant and order counts. Set an editing cutoff, one stock source and procedures for earlier orders and refunds. Check links, search, messages and payments afterward, with an appropriate rollback plan for material failures.
Exit ease is not the sole selection criterion, but reveals dependency costs. A suitable current offer with organized data and clear responsibility is more manageable than an ambitious promise making every service change a complete rebuild.

Decision questions and comparison checklist
Is WooCommerce cheaper because it is free?
The core is not the complete cost. Compare hosting, development, licenses, maintenance, support and transactions under one scenario.
Does Türkiye's absence from Shopify Payments prevent a Shopify store?
Separate the platform from the service. Verify an available third-party provider accepting your business, its charges and applicable platform fees.
Does a local solution include every integration?
Request a dated list specifying plan, country, apps, costs and responsibilities. An integration name does not establish its scope in your offer.
First select offers meeting decisive requirements, then compare costs and effort. Retain the reasoning and assumptions so changes in scale or market can prompt a fresh comparison without returning to logos.
