Starting an Online Store in Türkiye: From Idea to First Order

A practical guide for store owners in Türkiye

Define the customer and product before building the store.

Opening a store begins with a business decision: Who will you sell to, why will they choose you, and how will you deliver the product and handle their money and rights? Choosing a theme follows. Organizing these questions turns the project into verifiable tasks rather than subscriptions whose sales value you do not understand.

This guide is for physical-product sales to consumers within Türkiye, through independent sites or marketplaces. Digital products, services and exports require additional arrangements depending on their nature and customer country. You will finish with a launch checklist, an owner for each task and a way to test orders before public sales.

📌 Required outcome: A consistently sourceable product, an accepted business file, sustainable pricing, working payments, clear shipping and understandable returns. These establish readiness, beyond an attractive homepage.

1️⃣ 🎯 Define the customer and your promise

Write a brief definition: “We sell a specific product to a specific customer, solving a specific problem.” For example, small home organizers for apartment residents, with exact dimensions and usage photos. This is clearer than “Everything at good prices” and guides inventory, language and advertising.

Review similar products: What do buyers ask? Are complaints about quality, sizing or delays? Turn recurring questions into product and service requirements. Do not copy others' reviews onto your site or treat a competitor's follower count as evidence of profit.

🧭 Before moving on: Define the first delivery country, support language, price range and reason to try your store. For Turkish customers, ensure accurate, clear Turkish across products, policies and order messages; machine translation needs human review, particularly for sizes and terms.

2️⃣ 🧪 Test the product and supply before buying in bulk

Request a sample and inspect it as a customer: material, color, dimensions, packaging and use. Photograph the actual product and record differences that could cause returns. Branded goods require checking provenance and the right to list them; some categories also need specific safety and information requirements.

Ask suppliers about invoices, preparation time, minimum quantities, replenishment and defective items. Keep written confirmation of specifications, price and quantity; “Usually available” cannot support a customer delivery promise.

Start with a range you can describe and monitor accurately. Test interest through short interviews or an information page that takes no payments before sales readiness. Distinguish liking a photo from willingness to buy at the final shipped price. You need an actual sample and workable supply plan, beyond large inventory.

3️⃣ 🏬 Choose one initial sales channel

A domestic marketplace provides an interface within an established platform but imposes rules, contracts, fees and search-result competition. An independent site gives greater control over presentation and experience while making you responsible for traffic, operations, payments and policies. Combine them later once inventory and settlements are controlled.

Compare channels as a seller: Is the category accepted? Which documents are required? How are fees calculated? When do payouts arrive? Who handles shipping and returns? A Trendyol or Amazon buyer account does not create a seller account, and one platform's acceptance does not guarantee another's.

For an independent store, compare hosted platforms such as Shopify or local platforms with WooCommerce, which requires hosting and maintenance. Request an administration and integration demo, then total subscriptions, extensions, support, domain and development. Keep domain, email and store accounts in the business's name or under owner control, with clear developer permissions.

4️⃣ 🗂️ Organize launch and assign responsibilities

Do not perform every task simultaneously. Payment-provider applications depend on the business and site; shipping setup depends on packed products and origin address. Prepare photos and descriptions during business review, then stop at readiness checks if essential requirements remain missing.

Channel and acceptance fileStore owner and providerRequired account approvals and written costs

Testing and launchStore owner and teamSuccessful tests and order-monitoring plan

One person may own several stages in a small project. What matters is knowing who decides, implements and reviews. Developers test integration, accountants set invoicing and settlement arrangements, and operations test packaging; launch responsibility remains with the business owner.

5️⃣ ⚖️ Prepare the business and documents before receiving funds

Discuss business form, registration, invoicing and periodic obligations with a licensed Turkish accountant. Complete registration, tax obligations and books as applicable; ETBİS does not replace them. Sole proprietorships and limited companies differ in establishment, costs and liability; the choice depends on founder circumstances and activity. For foreigners, separate ownership from working in the company and verify permits or exemptions for your role; residence or incorporation alone does not resolve everything.

Electronic-commerce registration differs between your own site and domestic-marketplace-only sales. Operating in your own electronic environment falls within ETBİS registration categories, while selling only through domestic intermediaries does not carry the same registration and reporting duties. Overseas-intermediary sales are another case. Identify your route before submitting information.

Address and contact methodsSeller identification and operationsCorrect address and functioning email and contact

This is a preparation checklist, not a universal document list for every organization. Ask banks, platforms and providers for current requirements for your case; do not send sensitive documents to unverified intermediaries. Have the accountant choose e-Fatura or e-Arşiv according to taxpayer category and current rules rather than one threshold applied to every store.

Sample inspection and consistent packaging reduce order errors.

6️⃣ 💰 Calculate order costs and liquidity

Supplier price is not the cost of selling. Add packaging, store-paid shipping, collection or platform fees, and informed returns and marketing estimates. Separate per-order variable costs from rent, subscriptions, wages and accounting. Agree tax treatment with the accountant for consistent comparisons.

🧮 Hypothetical illustration only: All following amounts are in lira, with revenue and costs excluding VAT after aligning accounting treatment. They are not current prices or commissions, nor tax-inclusive consumer-facing prices.

Per-order itemHypothetical value
Sales revenue excluding tax1,000 lira
Cost of goods420 lira
Packaging25 lira
Store-paid shipping70 lira
Collection or channel fees35 lira
Marketing cost attributed to the order120 lira
Planning provision for returns and losses40 lira
Total variable items710 lira
Remainder before fixed expenses and income or corporate tax290 lira, or 29% of revenue

The remainder is the order's contribution toward fixed expenses, not net profit. Replace assumptions with actual quotes and data, avoiding double-counted fees. If example marketing costs rise by 100 lira, contribution falls to 190; additional sales are not automatically beneficial.

Plan liquidity too: When are suppliers and carriers paid, and when does the provider transfer proceeds? Retain funds for operations and refunds while awaiting settlements; total collections are not all available for personal withdrawals.

7️⃣ 🛒 Build pages that clarify the purchase decision

Give each product a SKU, understandable name, actual photos and descriptions of material, size and package quantity. Separate color and size inventory; black availability does not establish blue availability. Record packed parcel weight and dimensions for shipping quotes.

Show total tax-inclusive prices and additional charges before approval, with expected preparation and delivery times. Make seller contact, shipping, withdrawal, return and privacy information accessible while shopping. Do not reveal unexpected charges only at the last step.

Test mobile first: buttons, size selection, address entry, policies and returning to cart. Enable secure connections, backups and multifactor authentication where available, and define permissions. Ask for a practical backup restoration; “Backup” in a quote does not prove recovery works.

8️⃣ 💳 Establish payments and settlement before advertising

Choose a provider accepting your business and channel and integrating with your platform, after reviewing regulatory status and contract. Compare fees, settlement timing, refunds, disputes and required card support. Foreign cards, installments and currencies need confirmation in your offer rather than inference from a logo.

Distinguish Shopify the platform from Shopify Payments the payment service: Türkiye was absent from supported countries when checked on 11 October 2026, so choosing the platform requires checking an available third-party provider that accepts your activity.

Use the provider's test mode and official test data, covering success, decline, cancellation and return from checkout. Orders must become Paid only after trusted result verification, and repeated notifications must not create duplicate orders. Sandbox tests verify integration, not actual payouts; monitor the first live settlements after launch.

Prepare the order journey from stock to tracking and receipt.

9️⃣ 📦 Prepare shipping, customer service and returns

Request shipping quotes based on origin, destination, weight, dimensions and service. Test packaging before promising safe delivery and timing, and define carrier handover times and return addresses. Record and send tracking, assigning responsibility for delays, damage and incomplete addresses.

For distance sales to consumers, the general withdrawal period is 14 days, beginning with delivery for goods and subject to specified product and contract exceptions. Discounts alone do not remove this right. For withdrawal, consumers returning through the predesignated carrier do not bear return costs; if no carrier is designated, do not charge them those costs. Distinguish these cases from defects and nonconformity.

Organize withdrawal notices, receipt, inspection, invoicing adjustments and refunds. Do not impose store credit instead of an owed monetary refund; the general rule is repayment consistent with the original payment method. Have policies reviewed against current rules and product exceptions, ensuring staff can implement them beyond placing a footer link.

⁦1️⃣0️⃣⁩ ✅ Test a complete order before opening sales

Test on phone and desktop as a new user with suitable test data. Disable actual dispatches and external messages in the test environment and separate it from live stock and reports. Do not use real cards to simulate declines; follow provider test data.

TestAcceptable outcome
Product and variant selectionPrice, image and stock match selection
Cart, address and shippingCorrect total and supported destination
Successful test paymentOne test-paid order and correct notification
Declined or canceled paymentNo shipping or fictitious collection record
Last item and repeated notificationNo overselling, duplicate order or stock deduction
Preparation and trackingProduct, quantity, parcel and tracking match
Test cancellation and refundConsistent order, inventory and financial records
Invoices and communicationCorrect invoicing process and understandable messages

Record faults and repair owners, then retest affected parts. Simulated refunds do not return real money; review accountant and provider procedures for actual orders. Do not launch with amount, payment-confirmation or inventory faults even if the design is complete.

⁦1️⃣1️⃣⁩ 📈 Start with a limited launch and learn

Sell a range to destinations you can serve, with a known marketing budget and suitable operating cap. Monitor paid orders, preparation, delivery, inquiries, returns and pending funds daily. Fix repeated sizing or packaging causes before increasing advertising.

Measure visits, checkout starts and purchases without double-counting transactions. Separate revenue and profit, monitoring acquisition cost and contribution to expenses. Avoid large decisions from one day or a few orders, and do not treat advertising returns alone as store profitability.

Collect necessary customer data and explain purposes, processing grounds and rights. Separate marketing consent from purchase completion, and avoid unnecessary real-person test data. Order-status messages differ from promotions; review KVKK and IYS for data, messages and tracking tools.

⁦1️⃣2️⃣⁩ ❓ Questions deciding launch readiness

🔹 Can I start without an independent store?
Yes, choose a suitable marketplace after completing seller eligibility and current requirements. Test one channel, expanding when you can manage stock, invoices and orders across channels.

🔹 Does incorporation guarantee bank or gateway acceptance?
No. Each reviews activity, representatives, documents, risks and terms. Obtain acceptance confirmation before committing to costly development dependent on one provider.

🔹 How long does launch take, and what does it cost?
It depends on business, product, approvals and integration readiness. Obtain dated, itemized quotes and tie timing to successful tests; avoid one generic figure for every case.

🔹 Can products ship directly to Arab countries?
Study this as a later route, independently verifying destination, product, imports, charges and clearance responsibility. Enabling International Shipping alone does not resolve these requirements.

📋 Decision checklist before opening sales:
✅ Sample, supply and stock are ready; listing rights are clear.
✅ Business, invoicing and registrations were reviewed; accounts are accepted.
✅ Final pricing, settlement, liquidity and costs are understood.
✅ Policies, privacy, contact, packaging and returns can be implemented.
✅ Tests pass, monitoring has an owner, and launch scale matches capacity.

Complete unanswered essentials before expanding sales. A successful first order means the correct product, amount, delivery and follow-up, then reconciliation of invoice, collection and costs in your records.
