The main idea
In early 2026, Türkiye was debating tighter regulation of minors’ use of social media, including age limits, age verification and content restrictions. Parliament reported on 13 January 2026 that its Child Rights Subcommittee had discussed and adopted a draft report. The issue concerned families, privacy, education and digital safety. This article describes that period’s proposals, rather than a complete statement of the rules in force today.
What could regulation cover?
1) 2)
3)
4)
5)
What could this mean for foreign residents?
- Additional verification might be required, depending on the eventual system. Do not assume that a phone number, identity document or residence permit would necessarily be requested in every case.- Parents could activate parental controls without waiting for a change in the law.
- Follow the Official Gazette and statements from the competent authorities rather than rumours when checking the final requirements and their commencement dates.
Practical steps for families
- Enable the family and parental-control settings available in iOS or Android.- Protect purchases before linking a child’s account to payment cards or digital wallets.
- Review camera, location and microphone permissions. They can expose sensitive information if access is unnecessary or misused.
A question for discussion
Do restrictions provide effective protection, or might they encourage some children to use VPNs or accounts with false ages?
