Charging an Electric Car on the Road in Türkiye: Stations, Payment and Trip Planning

For an electric-car journey between cities, a pin on a map is not enough: you need a working compatible connector, a payment method, time to charge and a fallback. These steps apply to private and rental cars.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Know the car before departure

Check the car’s connector type, AC and DC charging capabilities, realistic range and current battery level. Ask about the cable if needed; do not assume every connector fits every car.

For a rental, request an explanation of operation, approved charging apps, cable, assistance, required battery level at return and any charges. Keep the company’s number and return agreement.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Find a suitable station

The Turkish energy regulator’s Şarj@TR platform shows public stations operated by licensed charging networks, including location, connector type and power, availability, payment methods and displayed price. Restricted-access private stations are not included in that public map.

Match the connector to your car and check location hours, access and parking conditions with the operator. Availability may change before arrival; choose a backup within safe range.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Plan distance and time

Choose a primary and backup stop before the battery becomes low. Account for the actual route, gradients, weather, traffic and breaks. Displayed range is an estimate affected by driving, heating, air conditioning and load; do not plan to arrive with zero reserve.

The charger’s advertised power is not a guaranteed constant charging speed for the car. Actual power varies with the vehicle, battery level and conditions. Allow time for waiting, charging and returning to the route.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Understand payment and price

Find out whether the operator accepts a card directly or requires an app or account, and prepare payment before a long drive. Do not assume all networks or foreign cards work in the same way.

EPDK states charging service prices are expressed in Turkish lira per kilowatt-hour and may vary by operator, location and connector type. Check the station price before starting and any published reservation or occupancy terms after you are notified charging is complete; distinguish these from parking charges if applicable.

⁦5️⃣⁩ A specific rule is not universal

EPDK explains that from 1 July 2026, at least one DC charging unit rated 50 kW or more at stations newly added to the charging network on motorways under the General Directorate of Highways must offer direct card or contactless digital payment without an additional fee or commission for that method.

This applies to specified stations and units; it does not mean every station or connector accepts a card directly. Check the actual payment methods for your chosen site.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Start charging and check the bill

Park in the designated space and follow the station and vehicle instructions to start and stop. Check that the session begins and monitor energy and time in the operator’s interface. Do not use a damaged cable or connector; seek assistance for a fault or unusual heat.

When finished, end the session as instructed, return the connector and vacate the space. Keep the session number and receipt. If the amount differs, request an itemized explanation of energy, rate and fees and contact the operator.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Worked example and fallback

If a car hypothetically uses 18 kWh per 100 km, a 200 km drive may require about 36 kWh for driving; actual consumption varies. If 30 kWh is purchased at an illustrative 10 lira per kWh, energy costs 300 lira before any other applicable charges. These are examples, not current prices.

If a station is occupied or out of order, use the planned backup or contact the operator; do not continue beyond a safe remaining range.

⁦8️⃣⁩ Common questions

Does Şarj@TR show every private charger?
The platform shows public stations of licensed operators; restricted-access private locations are not in that public information.

Does a higher-powered charger charge every car at the same speed?
No. Actual power depends on the car, battery level and conditions.

Can I pay by card without an app at every station?
No. Check the connector’s payment methods and the limited scope of the rule described above.
