Trabzon to Uzungöl: Choosing a Bus, Tour or Car
The outward and return route, time at the lake, stops and a day that suits your family
The outward and return route, time at the lake, stops and a day that suits your family
A visit to Uzungöl begins before you leave the hotel: choose transport that reaches the place you need, allow enough time at the lake and know how you will return. A car offers flexibility, a bus may suit a solo traveller's or couple's budget, and a tour organises the day in exchange for following the group itinerary. The differences lie in boarding points, stops, time at the destination and returning to your accommodation. Comparing only the outbound fare is not enough.
Uzungöl lies in Trabzon province's Çaykara district. Türkiye's Culture Portal places it around 99 kilometres from Trabzon and 19 kilometres from Çaykara. These are reference distances between broad locations; your hotel, parking place or lakeside accommodation may change the actual journey. Times in this guide are suggested planning allowances, not promised service durations.
Understand the route before choosing transport
The main route from Trabzon heads east along the coast towards Of, then inland towards Çaykara and Uzungöl. Save the Turkish names on your phone: Trabzon → Of → Çaykara → Uzungöl. They help you recognise the destination on maps and when asking for directions, without relying on a transliterated pronunciation.Staying in central Trabzon differs from staying west of the city, near the airport or on the Rize road. Calculate driving from the hotel door rather than a general “Trabzon” pin. At the other end, an Uzungöl pin may mark the middle of the area while your hotel or restaurant is up a side road. Save the actual entrance and parking location.
For initial car planning, allow around two to three hours each way from central Trabzon as a flexible estimate, depending on your starting point, traffic, stops and weather. Read the map's estimate that morning, then add parking and walking time. A car estimate does not automatically apply to a bus stopping along the route.
Which option suits you?
| Option | Often suits | Decide before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Bus or local service | Visitors wanting to reach the lake directly and willing to follow service times | Direction, boarding point, payment and same-day return |
| Shared tour | Visitors happy with a group itinerary who want transport arranged | Actual time in Uzungöl, stops, pickup and drop-off |
| Hire car | Those wanting freely chosen stops who can manage driving and parking | Suitable vehicle, route, insurance and fuel |
| Car with a driver | A family or group wanting a private itinerary | Service duration, waiting, stops, capacity and return |
No option wins in every situation. A solo traveller may prefer a tour or bus, while four people may compare private transport after dividing its cost among the group. A family needing a pushchair and frequent breaks benefits from flexibility, provided the vehicle really has room for everyone and their bags.
Municipal bus: an official starting point
Trabzon Municipality's transport portal lists route 328 as UZUNGÖL TRABZON – SAHİL PERON. Use that specific name in the official system or Trabzon Ulaşım app. Distinguish departures from the coastal terminal from departures from Uzungöl: the timetable separates SAHİL PERON KALKIŞ and UZUNGÖL KALKIŞ.| Day | Departure from the coastal terminal | Departure from Uzungöl |
|---|---|---|
| Weekdays | 06:15 and 14:45 | 08:40 and 17:15 |
| Saturday | 09:00 | 15:00 |
| Sunday | 09:00 | 15:00 |
The practical point is that Trabzon's afternoon departure is not automatically suitable for a day visit: compare it with the return from Uzungöl. Nor is the gap between opposite-direction departure times a confirmed journey duration. Ask about expected arrival, where to get off and board again, and whether you need a local transport card or another payment method.
Dolmuş and other services: confirm the final leg
If a hotel or office offers a local service to Çaykara, ask whether it ends in the town centre or continues to Uzungöl. A nearby district name does not prove that it reaches the lake. If changing, request the second operator's name, location and service on your date. Allow for waiting between the two legs, especially on the return. Before boarding, save a photograph of the vehicle or the service name and contact number if available, and record the departure location. Do not rely on “every hour” without confirming that day's timetable. Ask about luggage, pushchairs and seats: a local service may suit a small bag better than moving an entire family to a lakeside hotel.
If you cannot establish the return, change the plan before the day begins. An organised tour or private transport may work better. Buying an outbound journey and assuming a car will be available that evening leaves cost and timing uncertain, even when getting there is easy.
Day tours: assess the time you actually get
Request the written itinerary rather than relying on a beautiful lake photograph. When do you meet, how long does collecting passengers take, and how much time remains in Uzungöl after the stops? A long tour can still leave little time around the lake if it includes numerous shopping and activity stops.Ask whether collection is from your hotel or a central meeting point, and whether you return to the same place. Supply the hotel's name and location before paying, especially outside the centre. Ask about expected group size, communication language, pushchair space and walking required at stops.
An important distinction: the tour price may cover transport alone or transport with organisation; meals, optional activities and some admissions may be separate. Request inclusions and exclusions. If you will not join an optional activity, ask where you wait and for how long, so that period is clear in your day.
Driving: identify a precise arrival point
Save the parking area or hotel you intend to reach, then read the complete route before driving. If a map proposes an unfamiliar side-road shortcut, choose the locally recommended main road. Fewer kilometres do not necessarily mean greater comfort or less time.Plan one suitable rest stop outbound and leave a second optional, depending on time. A shop visit or breakfast stop is not instantaneous: allow for parking, ordering, facilities and returning to the car. If the lake is your priority, drop a stop the group does not value rather than cut lake time.
For a hire car, check seats, luggage capacity, child seats and conditions for your intended road. Distinguish parking from the walking route on the day: you need not move the car between every photograph spot if a manageable walk connects them. Ask about parking charges and conditions on site; no fixed fee here applies to every car park.
A private driver: a clear agreement makes the day easier
Send a short plan: hotel, Uzungöl, rest stop, approximate return time, passenger numbers and luggage. Confirm whether the price covers both directions with waiting or is per direction, and whether it includes collecting you from and returning you to your address.Specify service duration and who chooses the lakeside meeting point. Request a voice-call number and agree how to tell the driver you are heading back to the car. What does another hour cost? If rain changes the destination, what alternative is offered and how does it affect the price? Settling these details early gives you real flexibility.
A driver does not turn an overcrowded itinerary into an easy day. Ask for road and stop estimates, then choose what suits the family. If including a highland destination away from the lake, list it separately with confirmed access and time rather than assuming it is a free extra within “Uzungöl”.
A sample day by car or private transfer
Adjust this planning outline to your day; it is not a tour or bus timetable. Start at a morning time suitable for the family. Allow for driving first, a short break if needed, then arrival and time to find parking and facilities.| Stage | Initial allowance | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Journey to Uzungöl | Current driving estimate, a buffer and a short stop | Arrive without turning the morning into a series of visits |
| Walking around a suitable part of the lake | Around one to one and a half hours, according to ability | Views, photographs and comfortable walking |
| Meal and rest | Around an hour, adjustable | A break for children and adults |
| Free time nearby | Around an hour if the plan remains comfortable | Relaxing or extra walking without rushing |
| Return | Road time with a separate buffer | Reach the hotel at a suitable time |
You do not need to complete a full circuit of the lake for a successful day. Choose a section suited to your abilities and the weather, then return to the meeting point. By bus, work backwards from the confirmed return: first allow for reaching the boarding point, then fit food and walking into the time available.
Day visit or a lakeside stay?
A day visit suits seeing Uzungöl and returning to a Trabzon base. Staying allows longer mornings and evenings but changes the transport task: you need to carry luggage to the hotel door and arrange a return on another day. When booking accommodation, ask specifically: can a car reach the entrance, and where should I get off if arriving by bus? Some properties are up side roads or on higher ground. Do not compare hotels solely by proximity to the lake's name on a map. Save the hotel number and ask about the last stretch before losing mobile data.
Separate any highland outings around Uzungöl from your arrival transfer. Being in the area does not mean the lake service will take you there or the same vehicle suits every road. Give each addition a known location, time and transport arrangement rather than turning the lake day into unplanned climbs.
With children or an older traveller
Choose somewhere to sit and eat near your intended walk, then make the car meeting point easy to describe. Children need facilities and time to adjust clothing; an older traveller may prefer a long sit to the entire walk. Plan for those preferences from the start. With a pushchair, ask about carrying space and suitable walking surfaces rather than assuming every elevated viewpoint route is accessible. With a wheelchair, check hotel and restaurant entrances, facilities and the drop-off. A suitable vehicle alone does not make the whole day suitable.
Arrange breaks before everyone is tired. On a long return, an agreed short stop is more comfortable than rushing onwards and later changing the route to find facilities. If splitting the group, give everyone the meeting location, return time and contact number. Do not leave all journey information on one phone.
Weather and roads: what should you actually check?
In Turkish meteorological information, select Çaykara rather than relying on the coastal Trabzon forecast. Check temperature, rain and wind for your date, take a suitable extra layer and have somewhere to sit if rain starts. Good planning can preserve the enjoyment by reducing walking rather than automatically cancelling everything.Check KGM road and current works information and ask locally about the final stretch to a hotel or highland stop. Main-road bulletins do not describe every entrance or local road. In poor visibility, reduce additional stops and stay with the known route rather than add a viewpoint at the end of the day.
If you prefer to return in daylight, check sunset on your visit date and work backwards: desired arrival time minus driving, a rest stop and a buffer. Do not rely on one fixed departure time for every season.
Settle the return before leaving the vehicle
As soon as you get off, establish where you will return: which bay, parking area or identifiable landmark? Photograph it and save it offline. Ask the driver or staff what destination is displayed, especially if the vehicle goes to Çaykara or Of and you need another connection to Trabzon. If you arrive late that morning, drop an activity before the return deadline rather than push the whole delay to the end of the day. On a tour, keep the group meeting time; with private transport, tell the driver about any change to the agreed time. If you miss a service, contact the operator or hotel for an alternative with a known cost rather than assume another departure from an old timetable.
Save the hotel's Turkish address, phone number and location, and make your final Uzungöl decision “How do I reach my accommodation?” Reaching central Trabzon is not the end of the journey if your hotel is elsewhere.
Before booking
Should I combine Uzungöl and Ayder in one day?For a relaxed visit, give each its own day. Combining them increases road time and reduces time to enjoy the destinations. Consider it only with a clear actual plan suited to your group, rather than because the names look close on a small map.
Can a bus be enough without a tour?
It may be enough for visiting the lake if you confirm both directions, payment and boarding points. It does not provide private stops or automatic transport to highland destinations.
Do I need a large car?
Start with passengers, luggage and the pushchair, then choose usable capacity. A larger vehicle does not compensate for an unsuitable child seat or insufficient boot space.
What is the most useful question for a driver or tour organiser?
How much time will I actually have in Uzungöl, and where and when will I return to my hotel? Those questions explain the day's value better than a list of stop names.
