Camping in Türkiye: Choosing a Site, Permissions, Booking and Safety

A forest or coastal spot may look inviting, but overnight stays, fire and facilities depend on the particular site. Check the location before planning your trip.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Choose a suitable site

Identify the province and exact location, number of nights and type of accommodation. Confirm that the site is open on your dates and check access and weather. Keep the manager’s contact and a backup plan.

Ask where reception is, its hours, the latest check-in and how to report a delay. Check whether the car can reach the pitch or equipment must be carried, and request the entrance coordinates rather than only the park’s general location.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Check overnight permission

In a national or nature park, ask site management where camping is permitted and about seasonal restrictions and local forest-fire orders. A tent photo or open road does not mean overnight stays are allowed everywhere.

On private land obtain the owner’s permission and check official restrictions even if the owner agrees; ask the responsible authority if the land status is unclear. Do not assume one permit covers every site.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Book and understand costs

Ask whether booking is required and what the nightly price includes for people, tent, vehicle and entry, as well as arrival and departure times and cancellation terms. Check drinking water, toilets, showers, electricity and accessibility before paying.

Some protected areas charge separately for services. The site management can confirm the price and availability; keep the receipt and do not rely on a previous season’s price.

To compare two campsites, request the final price for the same nights, people and vehicles; ask whether the tent, electricity and entry cost extra. Compare cancellation terms, toilets, proximity to water and noise as well: the lower price may cover fewer services.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Prepare for weather and overnight stays

Bring a suitable tent, insulating sleeping mat, sleeping bag for nighttime temperatures, drinking water, food, light, first-aid supplies and personal medicines. Charge your phone and tell someone your plans and return time.

Avoid flood channels, unstable slopes, damaged trees and closed trails. Change the date if weather warnings exceed your equipment or experience.

Ask specifically whether tap water is safe to drink and bring safe water for the journey, cooking and brushing teeth. A clear stream is not necessarily safe; do not drink untreated unknown water. If chemical contamination is suspected, use another safe source because boiling does not remove it.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Fire, cleanliness and nature

Ask management separately about open fires, barbecues and gas stoves, including permitted places and times, and check the current provincial order. Overnight camping can be allowed while fire is restricted. Do not use any of them when prohibited. Never use a stove inside a tent because of poisoning, suffocation and fire risks.

Carry rubbish out or use bins, and do not leave food exposed, feed animals or collect plants. Keep to paths and follow conservation instructions.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Emergencies

If lost, stop somewhere safe and share your coordinates if possible; do not continue into unfamiliar terrain after dark. In immediate danger call 112 and give the site name, nearest entrance and nature of the emergency.

⁦7️⃣⁩ An example before payment

A family planning a forest overnight calls the operator to confirm tent permission on its dates, the price for four people, facilities and stove restrictions, then checks weather and access. If permission cannot be confirmed or a ban is issued, they choose another confirmed site.

With children, ask how close toilets and safe water are and what the ground and paths are like. Assign an adult to accompany them near water or roads; pack warm clothes, allow rest and plan an early departure if the weather deteriorates.

⁦8️⃣⁩ Common questions

Can I camp in any forest?
Do not assume so; check the land status, local decisions and instructions of the responsible authority, even when the owner agrees.

Is electricity included in the pitch fee?
Not always; ask for the cost of people, tent, vehicle, electricity and entry before booking and compare it with the other offer.

May I light a fire near the tent?
Ask separately about open fires, barbecues and stoves and follow local restrictions. Never use a stove inside the tent.
