Narsuyu village and the mountain landscape around Pervari.
Pervari brings a distinctly mountainous dimension to a visit to Siirt, with deep valleys and villages closely associated with beekeeping. One of the landmarks along the way is Beğendik Bridge over the Botan River, which transformed connections between the area and the provinces of Bitlis and Van. Allow a separate day if you want to enjoy both the journey and the local produce.
Pervari lies north-east of Siirt in mountainous country, and Beğendik is a town within its district. Be precise about your destination: Pervari town centre, the bridge and a particular village are separate stops, rather than interchangeable names for one place.
Check the outward and return routes with someone who knows the area, and plan for fuel and driving time. Snow can affect travel in winter, and a distance on the map is not enough to judge how long the journey will take.
Beğendik Bridge, also known as Botan Köprüsü, opened in July 2020. It is approximately 450 metres long and rises some 165 metres above the valley, with a main span of 210 metres.
This is a working road bridge connecting communities and provinces. Take photographs from a place where stopping is permitted; do not stop in the traffic lane or treat the crossing as an informal walking excursion.
Pervari honey and traditional honeycomb.
The route reveals striking contrasts between peaks, valleys and villages. A few carefully chosen stops can make the journey especially rewarding. Choose an obvious, safe place to rest rather than turning down a side road whose condition you have not checked.
If you want to visit a particular upland area or village, ask about access and facilities beforehand. Photographs of seasonal farming activities do not necessarily mean that a visitor experience is available there throughout the year.
Pervari honey reflects the varied flowers of the uplands and traditional beekeeping methods. These include karakovan hives and woven basket hives, in which the bees build their own wax comb.
When buying, ask who produced the honey, where it was made, when it was packed and whether you are buying honeycomb or extracted honey. Try a small sample if available, and choose a well-sealed container with clear information about origin and weight.
Set off early and choose just two main stops: a viewpoint for the bridge and a visit to a town or reputable shop. Arrange any apiary visit with its owner; hives beside the road do not imply permission to approach them.
Carry water and a snack, and save your destination's address for use if the connection becomes weak. Allow for changes in the route or weather, and leave Siirt's other sights for another day if the journey takes longer than expected.
