Archaeological objects on display at Hasankeyf Museum.
Hasankeyf's geography changed when the Ilısu Dam reservoir filled. The museum and archaeological park now provide the best introduction to the heritage that survives and the monuments relocated for protection. This outing focuses on collections and architecture; keep it separate from a boat trip if you want to give each experience its own time.
1.
Start at the museum
Hasankeyf Museum is in Kültür Mahallesi, on Müze Caddesi. Published official timetables differ over Monday access, so confirm the visiting day and admission hours directly before travelling, particularly around public holidays. Enquiries: +90 488 502 49 30.
Visit the galleries before exploring the relocated buildings. The sequence of objects and site maps helps explain Hasankeyf's relationship to excavations in Batman, Siirt, Mardin and Diyarbakır.
2.
Excavations in the Tigris Valley
The museum displays stone and bone tools, pottery and metal objects from several periods. An important part of the collection comes from rescue excavations associated with the Ilısu project, alongside objects transferred from regional museums.
Choose two or three galleries according to your interests, and look at the difference between everyday objects and funerary finds. The names of archaeological mounds on the labels help connect exhibits to their original sites.

3.
How was the archaeological park created?
The archaeological park near the museum was created to receive monuments whose original locations were affected by the reservoir. Relocation and conservation work included Zeynel Bey's tomb and other monuments, among them Er-Rızk Mosque, the Artukid bathhouse, historic gateways and buildings.
Check the visitor route available on the day. The museum, open spaces and relocated buildings stand close to one another, but admission to one does not guarantee that every interior is open.
| Part of the visit | What to explore | Access arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Hasankeyf Museum galleries | Rescue-excavation collections and the history of the Tigris Valley | Confirm the day, hours and admission, especially on Mondays |
| Open spaces and relocated monuments | Architecture moved from sites affected by the Ilısu reservoir | Check the open route; do not assume every interior is accessible |
| Zeynel Bey's tomb | Ceramic decoration and façade inscriptions | View from the permitted path and compare its former and present settings |
| Boat trip | A waterside experience separate from the galleries | A separate booking and clear boarding and return points |
4.
Zeynel Bey's tomb in detail
Zeynel Bey's tomb stands out for its cylindrical form, ceramic decoration and façade inscriptions. It dates from the fifteenth century and is associated with Zeynel Bey, son of Uzun Hasan of the Aq Qoyunlu dynasty.
Stand far enough back to appreciate how the decoration wraps around the building. Its current display setting differs from its former position near the river, making the museum's historic photographs and maps particularly helpful.
Water activities at Hasankeyf in September 2026; a boat trip requires arrangements separate from the museum visit.
5.
A comfortable cultural visit
Combine the museum and the route around the relocated monuments in one part of the day, allowing a break between indoor galleries and exposed outdoor spaces. If you also want a boat trip, give it a separate time after confirming the departure and boarding point.
Wear comfortable shoes, carry water in hot weather and stay behind barriers and on visitor paths. Ask about photography in the galleries, and do not use old photographs of Hasankeyf to judge today's parking or access arrangements.
| Suggested order | Stop | How to keep it unhurried |
|---|---|---|
| First | Museum galleries | Choose two or three galleries to match your interests |
| Second | A break, then relocated monuments | Allow time to walk between exposed outdoor areas |
| Third | Zeynel Bey's tomb in detail | Read the interpretation and compare decoration without touching |
| Optional separate time slot | A boat trip | Do not assume it shares the museum ticket or timetable |
