Introduction
Batman is a city whose modern growth has been closely tied to oil. Its wider province combines rugged landscapes with a much older historical heritage. The city stands on a broad plain near the Batman River, with mountains and valleys giving the surrounding region its distinctive character.
Batman province lies in southeastern Türkiye. Its neighbours include:
• Bitlis and Siirt to the east and northeast.
• Diyarbakır to the west.
• Mardin to the south.
• Muş to the north.
The city occupies a broad plain, while the wider province includes mountainous terrain. The nearby Batman River is a tributary of the Tigris.
Although Batman's provincial status is relatively recent, the region contains much older historic sites, including:
• Hasankeyf.
• Historic bridge architecture associated with the Batman River, notably Malabadi Bridge on the Diyarbakır side near the provincial boundary.
• Caves and rock-cut settlements.
• Castles and ruins in the surrounding region.
The province's landscapes include:
• Deep valleys and impressive rocky terrain.
• Mountain country towards eastern Anatolia.
• The Batman River, an important feature of the region's scenery and agricultural landscape.
Places and landscapes of interest include:
• Historic Hasankeyf, with today's visit centred on its surviving and relocated heritage and the new visitor area; much of the old lower town was submerged by the Ilısu reservoir.
• Historic river-bridge architecture in the wider area.
• The province's scenic valleys.
• Villages with a distinctive local rural character.
Confirm the current visitor routes and access arrangements rather than expecting the former Hasankeyf landscape to remain unchanged.
Important sectors include:
• Oil production and processing, with the Raman and Batı Raman fields forming part of Batman's industrial heritage.
• Industry.
• Agriculture.
• Trade between southeastern provinces.
• Kültür neighbourhood.
• The central Çarşı area.
• Newer neighbourhoods near the city centre.
