Balıkesir province reaches from the Sea of Marmara in the north to the Aegean coast in the west and south-west. These contrasting settings bring together blue coastal scenery and green uplands, making the province a popular destination for domestic travel.
The Aegean shores around Edremit and Ayvalık are among its best-known holiday areas. Cunda, also called Alibey Island, is famous for stone streets and buildings that reflect its Greek and Turkish history.
Forests and protected landscapes enrich the province. Kazdağı National Park, on Mount Ida, is known for wooded scenery and opportunities for walking, photography and relaxation, subject to the rules for its protected areas.
Olive oil and fresh seafood are central to the coastal food culture. Inland and coastal traditions also meet in local meat dishes, including kebabs.
- May to September is a popular period for the coast, with warmer conditions in midsummer.
- Consider a boat trip around the Ayvalık islands and Cunda.
- Sample local food and look for olive oil in village markets.
- Explore permitted routes around Kazdağı for forest scenery and views.
