Denizli lies in the eastern part of Türkiye's Aegean region. It is internationally known for Pamukkale, the “Cotton Castle”, with dazzling white terraces and warm, mineral-rich water.
Pamukkale and Hierapolis together form a UNESCO World Heritage property. Its travertine terraces develop as calcium carbonate is deposited by flowing thermal water. People have visited the springs since antiquity, including during the Roman period.
Above the terraces stands Hierapolis, founded in the Hellenistic period and later developed into a major Roman spa city. Its impressive remains include a theatre, baths and an extensive necropolis.
Mountains and valleys surround Denizli, while textiles and cotton products have helped make it an important commercial centre. Visits are possible throughout the year, with hot summers and cooler, sometimes cold winters.
- Arrive early at Pamukkale for softer light and fewer crowds.
- Consider the historic Antique Pool, often called Cleopatra's Pool; check current access and bathing arrangements before visiting.
- Bring suitable clothing and a towel if planning a thermal bathing visit, as well as footwear for the archaeological area.
- An overnight stay at a nearby thermal hotel can add a relaxing element to the trip.
