Manisa lies north-east of İzmir in the Aegean region. Its green mountain setting and long history encompass Lydian, Roman and Ottoman heritage. In Ottoman times it was an important provincial seat where princes gained governing experience.
Highlights include the Muradiye Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Murad III, and Sardis, the ancient Lydian capital near Sart in the province. Ottoman houses and traditional markets also preserve the character of earlier Manisa.
Extensive farmland produces grapes, olives and dried fruit. Spil Dağı rises above the city, with forested scenery protected within a national park. The mountain's lower slopes are also associated with the Niobe, or “Weeping Rock”, a natural formation linked to Greek mythology.
The Mesir Macunu Festival preserves an Ottoman tradition. Wrapped portions of a paste made with herbs and spices are scattered from the minarets and domes of Sultan Mosque to the crowds below. Its association with healing belongs to the festival's traditional story.
- Spring is a good time for the mountains and, when scheduled, the Mesir festivities; check the current festival programme.
