Otomatik ödeme means an automatic payment instruction. It can help manage recurring bills, but it still needs monitoring and enough available funds or card limit.
1. How does it work?
For a supported biller, you authorise your bank to pay a bill from an eligible account or card according to the instruction and bank's arrangements. Electricity, water, internet and mobile bills are common examples. A subscription charged directly by a merchant may use a different recurring-payment arrangement.
Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: Payment is not universally taken as soon as a bill is issued. The date, funding method, supported biller, charges and failure procedure depend on the service. Creating an instruction does not guarantee that every future bill will be paid.
2. When is it useful?
It can help when you travel, manage several bills or find due dates easy to overlook. Continue checking the actual due dates and payment status; service providers have their own rules about arrears and interruption.
3. Common mistakes
• Forgetting how an automatic charge affects the funds or limit needed for everyday spending.
• Leaving an instruction connected to a previous home or old customer account after moving.
• Assuming that a bill must be correct because it is paid automatically.
Using your main card is not inherently a mistake. The important points are affordability, visibility and whether the chosen setup suits your needs.
4. Set it up around your budget
Where practical, dedicate an account or card to bills, or clearly reserve the necessary funds in your main account. Check any charges and whether a payment might use an agreed overdraft or other borrowing.
Enable available notifications and review bills monthly for unexpected amounts. Check instructions again after a card replacement, account change or move.
5. Verify the first payment
Confirm the biller and customer or subscription number when creating the instruction. Follow the first bill through to a completed payment and keep its receipt.
If something is wrong, contact the bank or biller and establish what is pending before cancelling or creating another instruction. Otherwise, a bill may be missed or paid twice. Use the correct official process to amend inaccurate details.
Cancelling the bank instruction does not cancel the utility contract, a merchant subscription or an amount already owed. End the underlying service separately when required.
Automate the payment, not the oversight
An instruction can reduce administration, but regular checks are still needed. Keep track of what should be paid, when it is due and whether it actually succeeded.
