A short shopping stop during a historic day
Behind the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Arasta Bazaar offers a focused visit among carpet, kilim, textile, ceramic and gift shops. It suits adding shopping to the historic district without dedicating an entire day to markets. The orderly passage and neighbouring shopfronts make it easy to compare a few shops and return to a piece that caught your attention.
The shops were historically linked to the mosque complex, with rental income contributing to its upkeep. The setting illustrates the relationship between trade, public life and religious buildings in Ottoman Istanbul. It is worth appreciating even on a browsing visit.

Carpets and kilims: ask specific questions about material, weave and dimensions, then request a look at the reverse and details. For a home purchase, bring measurements and a photograph of the room’s colours rather than guessing in front of an attractive display.

Peştemal: a light towel associated with the Turkish bath, sold among textiles and gifts. Check fibre composition, washing instructions and unfolded size. A piece attractive as decoration may not suit your intended use.

İznik-inspired ceramics: an option for lovers of Turkish decorative motifs. Ask where a piece was made, whether the decoration is hand-painted or printed, and whether it is suitable for food. Decorative style alone does not establish its purpose.

Soap and small gifts: useful for light presents to distribute, but read ingredients and choose clear packaging. Do not assume that “natural” means suitable for every skin type.

Choosing an attractive gift thoughtfully
| Your idea | Suitable choice | What to check |
|---|
| A light gift | Peştemal or scarf | Material, size and care instructions |
| A home souvenir | Decorative plate or ceramic piece | Finish and suitability for its use |
| A distinctive piece | Kilim or carpet | Weave, dimensions and documentation |
| Several gifts | Soap or small souvenirs | Ingredients, packaging and quantity |
Fitting it into your itinerary
Sultanahmet station on T1 serves the district. Walk towards the mosque and continue to the bazaar behind it. Visit after the landmarks if buying fragile objects or several bags, reducing how long you carry them while sightseeing.

There are places for a break around the bazaar and district. With children or older companions, find a seat before continuing and keep shopping to a length suited to the group’s energy.
Calm comparisons before buying

Ask about the same kind of piece in several shops, comparing material, dimensions and production method. When negotiating, establish product details before the price; a discount does not compensate for an unsuitable choice.

Keep the shop name and receipt, and ask for shipping or exchange agreements in writing. For ceramics, request separate protection for each piece and check that the contents sit securely in their packaging before leaving.

Textile displays and colourful ceramics make attractive subjects. Ask the shopkeeper before photographing details or indoor displays, and choose a position that keeps the passage clear.
A flexible visit and a historical note
Allow around an hour for light browsing, longer for inspecting carpets or comparing large pieces. The Great Palace Mosaic Museum is within the Arasta site and remained marked closed on the Ministry’s page when checked on 9 October 2026. Confirm reopening before including it in your plans. Ask about shop hours if visiting on a holiday or to a specific timetable.
