Uşak lies in the eastern part of the Aegean region, on routes linking the Aegean with central Anatolia. This position has made it an important transport and trading centre.
Uşak is especially associated with textiles and handwoven carpets. Its wider history includes Phrygian, Lydian, Roman and Ottoman heritage. Jewellery and metalwork can also be found in local shops, although silver filigree is not the city's defining traditional craft.
- Traditional carpets known as Uşak halısı.
- Locally sold craftwork and jewellery; ask about the origin of pieces described as telkâri, or silver filigree.
- Cotton and other textiles produced for domestic and export markets.
- Uşak Archaeology Museum.
- Ulubey Canyon, with its dramatic views and glass observation terrace.
- Traditional craft workshops and villages where you can enquire about buying directly from carpet makers.
Roads connect Uşak with Denizli, Afyonkarahisar and Kütahya. Intercity coaches also link it with İzmir and Manisa; check operators for current services.
- Buy carpets from reputable workshops or cooperatives and ask for a clear invoice and information about their origin.
- Try tahin helvası, tahini halva, and local baked goods.
