Afyonkarahisar, in western Anatolia, offers a distinctive combination of history and natural scenery. Its name joins the word for opium, reflecting the region's poppy cultivation, with “black fortress”, the rocky citadel that dominates the city.
The fortress rises on a steep volcanic outcrop with a history traced to the Hittite period. Hundreds of steps lead towards panoramic views, when access is permitted. The city also has historic mosques, including the 13th-century Ulu Cami, and traditional Ottoman houses in its older quarters.
Afyon is an important thermal tourism centre, with hot springs and bathing facilities attracting visitors from across Türkiye. The surrounding countryside also contains licensed poppy cultivation for pharmaceutical and food uses.
The region is especially known for kaymak, its rich clotted cream, as well as other dairy products and sweets. Afyon sucuk is another celebrated speciality: a spiced meat sausage, rather than a grape-and-nut sweet.
- If the fortress route is open, allow time for the climb and return before access closes or daylight fades.
- Try a thermal bathing experience at one of the region's hotels.
- Taste the local dairy products, especially kaymak.
- Spring and autumn are pleasant seasons for exploring.
