10 Mistakes That Can Lead to Visa or Residence Permit Refusal in Türkiye

Visa and residence permit applications have different requirements. A well-prepared file does not guarantee approval. These ten points cover avoidable problems rather than a verified statistical ranking of refusal reasons.

People sometimes put a refused visa or residence permit down to “bad luck”. In practice, problems with the purpose of the application, eligibility or supporting documents can affect the outcome.

This guide explains 10 common mistakes that can lead to:
- refusal of a Türkiye visa by an embassy or consulate;
- refusal of a residence permit application or extension within Türkiye.

Each section includes practical steps to help you prepare a clear, accurate application.

❌ 1. Weak or unconvincing financial evidence

📌 The problem:
- A bank statement shows very limited funds or little activity.
- A large sum appears shortly before the application, with no evidence explaining its source.

💡 Why it matters:
The consulate or migration authority may need to establish that you can meet your expenses and that your stated purpose is credible. A balance alone may not satisfy the requirements for your application.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Follow the financial evidence requirements for the particular visa or residence permit. A 3–6 month account history can serve as a preparation guide; this is not a universal document period for every application.
- Explain and document the source of funds, including any legitimate large recent payment. Do not temporarily inflate an account to create a misleading impression.
- Provide evidence of regular salary or other income, where relevant, supported by documents such as contracts, rental income records or business records.
- For a short-term residence permit for tourism, the current official e-İkamet form requires evidence of sufficient and regular income for at least the last three months. It defines sufficient income as at least one and a half times the current net minimum wage for an individual application, or at least one net minimum wage for each family member when applying together. Check the current form and the minimum wage applicable on your application date.

❌ 2. Missing documents or required translations and certification

📌 The problem:
- A required document is missing, such as a relevant passport copy, accommodation evidence, health insurance or correctly prepared photographs.
- A document is in an unacceptable language and lacks a required translation or certification by a Noter (Turkish notary).

✅ How to avoid it:
- Read the requirements on the relevant embassy or consulate website for a visa.
- For a residence permit, check the current e-İkamet document list and any instructions from the provincial migration directorate handling your application.
- Prepare the file several days before the appointment and check it twice.
- Where a Turkish translation is required, use a sworn translator and obtain notarial certification where the official instructions require it.
- Do not assume that every applicant needs the same documents, or that every foreign document needs the same form of certification.

❌ 3. Details that do not match across forms and documents

📌 The problem:
- Your name differs from the passport, even by an added or missing letter.
- Your marital status, passport number or date of birth is inconsistent.

💡 These differences can create uncertainty about the information in the application and may require correction or clarification.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Enter passport details exactly as shown, including the order of names.
- Check:
- passport number;
- date of birth;
- marital status;
- address.
- Make sure each answer is accurate for the question being asked and supported by the relevant document.

❌ 4. An unclear or contradictory purpose

📌 The problem:
You state that you are a tourist, but:
- your hotel booking is for two months;
- your financial evidence does not support that stay;
- you have no clear travel plan.

A long booking is not itself a refusal reason. The concern is whether your purpose, plans and resources fit together.

Another example is applying on the basis of tourism while actually living and working in Türkiye without the required work authorisation.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Explain your actual purpose clearly: tourism, study, medical treatment, investment or a family visit, for example.
- Ensure that your proposed length of stay, accommodation and financial evidence are consistent with that purpose.
- Use the application route for which you genuinely qualify.

❌ 5. Repeated long stays that do not fit a genuine tourism purpose

📌 The problem:
Frequent entries and exits, combined with spending much of the year in Türkiye on short tourist stays or successive tourism-based residence permits, may leave the actual reason for staying unclear.

💡 Important distinction:
Visa or visa-exempt stays are subject to the authorised stay for your nationality and passport, with a general ceiling of 90 days in any 180-day period. Leaving and returning does not reset that allowance. A residence permit is a separate permission, and an extension still requires an eligible and genuine basis.

✅ How to avoid it:
- If you plan to live in Türkiye for an extended period, check the route that matches your circumstances, such as eligible residential property ownership, formal study, family residence or authorised work.
- Do not assume that repeated tourism-based applications guarantee continued residence.
- Explain and document a genuine tourism purpose where that is the basis of your application.

❌ 6. Health cover that does not meet residence permit requirements

📌 The problem:
Where health cover is required, the evidence is:
- expired;
- insufficient for the requested residence period;
- or not accepted for the application.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Check which form of health cover is accepted for your circumstances. A suitable private policy is one option; eligible SGK (Social Security Institution) cover, cover under a bilateral social security agreement or an applicable exemption may also be relevant.
- Ensure that the accepted cover meets the required period. If you request a year, do not submit a shorter policy unless the official rules provide an applicable alternative.
- Check that the insurer and policy are genuine and that the policy meets the official residence permit requirements.
- Submit the policy or other evidence in the form required by the document list, including signatures or stamps where required.
- Keep paper and electronic copies.

❌ 7. Fictitious tenancy agreements or inaccurate addresses

📌 The problem:
- A tenancy agreement exists only on paper, and you do not actually live at the address.
- The address differs between the tenancy agreement, application form and any utility bill requested.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Use genuine accommodation and truthful supporting documents.
- When relying on rented accommodation, the current e-İkamet list requires a notarised copy of the tenancy agreement containing the lessor’s information.
- Check that the address in the application matches the agreement and any requested bill.
- Do not use a fictitious agreement. False documents can damage the current application and have consequences for future applications.

❌ 8. Copying someone else’s explanation

📌 The problem:
Some applicants copy a friend’s or an online explanation of their reasons for residence word for word. A generic statement may fail to explain the applicant’s own circumstances and plans.

💡 Why it matters:
The application should give a credible account of why you are applying and how you meet the requirements. A standard paragraph cannot replace evidence.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Explain your reasons in your own words:
- Why Türkiye?
- What are your realistic plans during the requested stay?
- Keep the explanation personal, accurate and consistent with your documents.
- Use a template only to organise information, without copying claims that do not apply to you.

❌ 9. Ignoring messages or requests for further information

📌 The problem:
The consulate or migration authority may request:
- an additional document;
- an explanation;
- attendance in person.

Missing a deadline can leave the file incomplete and affect the application.

✅ How to avoid it:
- Monitor the email address and telephone number you provided.
- Check the relevant official visa or residence application system and any official notification channel required for your application.
- Respond promptly, accurately and within the stated deadline.
- Follow the instructions for submitting extra documents or attending in person.

❌ 10. Working without authorisation while holding a tourism-based residence permit

📌 The problem:
A person holds a short-term residence permit for tourism but works in Türkiye without the required permission, for example in:
- a restaurant;
- a shop;
- a company;
- another business operating locally.

Unauthorised work can have immigration and financial consequences, including problems with a residence permit or a later application.

✅ How to avoid it:
- If you intend to work, check the work permit or work permit exemption requirements before starting.
- A valid çalışma izni (work permit) or qualifying exemption generally also provides the right to reside for its validity period; a separate residence permit is normally unnecessary. Special rules apply to certain protection statuses.
- If you own a company or invest in a business, check the authorisation required for the work you will actually carry out. Registering a company does not itself grant permission to work.
- Do not treat a tourism-based residence permit as work authorisation.
