Türkiye Visas and Residence Permits 2025: Types, Requirements and Application Steps

This 2025 guide introduces Türkiye's visa and residence arrangements for tourism, study, employment, family residence and property owners, with document preparation, fees, application stages and common mistakes.

English editorial clarification — checked on 8 October 2026: The 2025 date identifies the original guide. The English text below distinguishes visas from residence permits and work permits, and qualifies application steps that vary by case. Visa exemptions depend on nationality and passport; check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' current rules. For residence applications, use e-Residence and the checklist issued for your application. A complete file does not guarantee approval.

At a glance

  • Identify your purpose: a short visit, which may be visa-exempt or require a visa/e-Visa, or a stay requiring a residence permit or work authorisation.
  • Prepare legible digital copies and an organised paper file, with the Turkish translations required for your case. An English copy alone may not be sufficient.
  • Apply early within the permitted window and use official websites and appointment instructions.
  • Ensure that the required health cover and accommodation evidence support the period requested.

Who is this guide for?

- First-time visitors checking whether they need a visa or e-Visa.
- Students, workers and families planning to live in Türkiye.
- Residents considering renewal or a change of permit category.

  2. Residence arrangements: the purpose of each category.
  3. A general document checklist.
  4. Online forms and application steps.
  5. Fees and timing: practical estimates and limitations.
  6. Common application problems and how to avoid them.
  7. Forum links for further reading.

1) Visas and e-Visas

When is a visa enough?

- For a permitted short visit, where your nationality and purpose require a visa. Check transit requirements separately and check whether a visa exemption applies first.
- e-Visa is available only to eligible travellers for tourism or business. If you need a visa and do not qualify, follow the relevant Turkish mission or authorised centre's procedure.

Important points

- Check whether your permission allows single or multiple entry, its validity and the permitted length of stay.
- A visa does not automatically become a residence permit. Staying longer or changing purpose requires the relevant permission and conditions.

2) Residence arrangements

  • Tourism: A purpose for a short-term residence permit, subject to the applicable conditions and assessment of the proposed stay. It is not general permission to remain while organising other matters.
  • Student: For eligible study, with the required enrolment and other supporting evidence, including health cover where applicable.
  • Work: Requires the relevant work permit or exemption. A valid work permit generally also serves as a residence permit, subject to statutory exceptions; an employment contract alone is insufficient.
  • Family: For eligible family members and sponsors meeting the applicable conditions.
  • Property ownership: May support a short-term permit application if the property and applicant meet current requirements. Ownership does not automatically grant a permit.

3) General document checklist

  • A valid passport and required copies; translation or authentication may be needed.
  • Recent photographs meeting the relevant official specifications; residence applications normally require biometric photographs.
  • Health cover for the requested period, where required.
  • The required accommodation/address evidence, such as tenancy documents, address registration or other accepted evidence for your case.
  • Documents supporting your purpose, such as student enrolment, work authorisation documents, family records or a title deed.
  • Printed receipts for the fees you are required to pay.
Use the checklist for your actual visa or residence application rather than treating this as a universal list.

4) Online application steps

  1. Choose the correct official service: e-Visa for an eligible visa application, e-Residence for a residence application, or the relevant consular/work permit procedure.
  2. Complete the form carefully, with names matching the passport and accurate dates.
  3. Provide any files requested by that service. Keep clear PDF copies with organised filenames, such as Name_Type_Date.pdf, for your own records; not every procedure requires a universal PDF upload.
  4. Complete any appointment or submission stages specified for your case, and print the application form and receipts where required.
  5. Attend with an organised paper file if attendance is required. Follow the current instructions rather than assuming the same appointment system applies to visas, renewals and work permits.

5) Fees and timing

StagePlanning estimateNotes
Preparing documentsThe original guide suggests 3–7 daysA personal planning estimate, not an official period; translation or authentication can take longer
Obtaining an appointmentDepends on availability and the procedurePrepare early and comply with the application deadline
ProcessingVaries by application and completenessMonitor the official service and the email/SMS details used in your application
Check current charges for your travel document, nationality and application type. The original guide does not provide a verified fee schedule.

6) Common application problems

- Unclear, incomplete or crooked photographs/scans.
- Health cover or accommodation evidence that does not support the requested period.
- Missing documents or a disorganised file. Clear filenames help preparation; filename style alone is not a verified legal ground for refusal.
- Attending without the required originals and copies.
These are avoidable problems, not a complete statement of legal refusal grounds.

Frequently asked questions

When should I apply to renew my residence permit?
Apply within the 60 days before expiry and before the permit expires. Prepare early and check that your accommodation and required health cover remain suitable.

Can I move from a tourism permit to work or study?
It may be possible if you meet the relevant conditions. Student residence and work authorisation use different procedures; a job offer or admission letter does not itself confer the new permission. Check whether you qualify for the relevant application route while in Türkiye.

Keeping your documents organised

- Keep a well-organised cloud folder, with Turkish/English copies where useful and clear filenames.
- Prepare a short covering letter explaining your circumstances and requested duration if useful or requested; it does not replace required evidence.
- Put an updated on date at the top of your own checklist and review it regularly.
