Visiting Family in Türkiye: Visas, Invitations and Documents

If you are an adult planning a temporary visit to a mother, father, sibling, adult child or spouse in Türkiye before leaving, start with your own entry conditions and the actual purpose of the trip. A relative in Türkiye or their invitation letter does not automatically select your visa or grant family residence or work rights. Two family members may face different conditions because of nationality, passport type or country of residence.

This guide organises the visit before travel: choosing an exemption or appropriate visa, preparing the invitation and evidence of accommodation and funding, submitting and following the application, then reading the outcome, entering and leaving. Selected information was reviewed on 26 October 2026. The checklist issued by the mission or its authorised centre for your circumstances governs the practical application. There is no single checklist, period or tariff here for every nationality.

1. A temporary visit or moving to live with family?

A temporary visit has a purpose, duration, accommodation and funding arrangements, and a coherent departure plan. You may visit a relative who is a Turkish citizen, residence permit holder or has another legal status, but the host's status does not give every visitor identical conditions. Describe a fixed-period visit if that is your actual plan, rather than using a short-visit label to conceal a different intention.

Family residence is a separate application to live with eligible family under relationship and sponsor requirements. It is not another name for every family visit. A parent visiting an adult child or a brother visiting his sister does not automatically qualify as reunification or family residence. Even a spouse making a temporary visit must identify the purpose and procedure. Marriage alone is not a visa, admission or residence decision.

This guide is for an adult visitor arriving from abroad. If the actual aim is moving to live with a spouse or a child joining family, use the specialist guide instead of transferring the visit checklist to that route. Children, consents and guardianship have their own files; an adult's file cannot be assumed to cover them.

Actual journeyRoute to examineWhat not to assume
Visiting a parent, sibling or adult child for a fixed periodThe applicable exemption or visit visa and return planA family residence right for every relative
Visiting a spouse temporarily and then leavingEntry, purpose and documents for this visitA marriage certificate replaces required permission
Moving to live with a spouse or familyEntry conditions and the appropriate residence route separatelyA visit visa has become residence permission
A minor accompanies the tripThe child's passport, permission, consents and proceduresOne adult's file covers everyone

2. Choose the entry route using the visitor's passport

Review nationality, travel document, document type, purpose and intended period. An exemption may apply under its conditions, an electronic visa may be available to eligible travellers under the purpose and displayed requirements, or an application to a Turkish mission may be necessary. Residence in a Gulf country does not confer that country's citizen exemption. Do not apply the eligibility of someone with a different passport to yourself.

Check how the mission classifies your visit. It may place visiting relatives under tourism or visits and list reunification separately. Do not choose a category simply because of its name or shorter checklist. If the journey has several purposes, explain them rather than hiding a material purpose.

Not every visitor automatically receives 90 days, and the entire visa validity window is not necessarily the allowed stay. Read entries, permitted stay and exemption or visa conditions together, and review previous visits where they must be counted.

3. Identify the mission and channel before preparing the file

Identify the mission responsible for your country of nationality or lawful residence under its acceptance rules and consular jurisdiction. If applying outside your nationality country, check the required lawful-residence evidence and whether you can lodge the application there. Your relative's address in Türkiye does not by itself determine where you apply abroad.

The mission may receive applications directly or through an authorised centre under its arrangements. A centre may organise appointments, receive the file and fees, and forward the application, while the competent mission decides. Do not generalise Saudi or Syrian arrangements to other countries, or treat an unauthorised intermediary as the decision maker.

Keep the category name, checklist and form, attendance and submission instructions applicable when you apply. Ask before paying for translation or authentication if the channel or category does not match your circumstances. Do not make different applications with conflicting information in search of an earlier appointment.

4. Make the visit plan clear and consistent

Agree with the host on the reason for the visit, duration, address and who covers each expense. These details should agree across the form, invitation, reservations and funding evidence. If some nights are with a relative and others in a hotel, explain the actual arrangement rather than creating a booking you do not intend to use to conceal the host address.

Identify intended arrival and departure dates, onward travel or return, and what supports your return under your actual circumstances and checklist: employment, study, business, commitments or documented resources where requested. Do not invent a job or ownership, or treat a paid ticket alone as evidence guaranteeing the outcome.

Reservations are planning evidence where requested, not a universal instruction to buy non-refundable tickets before the decision. Read amendment and cancellation conditions and allow for appointment delays or an additional-document request.

5. The invitation: who invites whom, why and where?

When an invitation is submitted for a tourist-visit visa application, official guidance specifies information about the inviter and invitees, the permanent address, contact details, intended length and purpose of stay, and relationship. Use names matching the documents and explain the actual visit rather than a generic letter that does not establish who will stay or where.

The guidance also mentions the inviter's undertaking to cover food and accommodation and take responsibility for them, while the applicant still needs sufficient resources or regular income. Make the undertaking clear and consistent with the actual arrangement and the mission's requirements. Do not describe a hosting letter as a guarantee preventing refusal or removing assessment of the visitor.

The guidance refers to the inviter's Turkish identity number. If the host is a foreign national, do not enter a Turkish number or status they do not hold. Check the identity and lawful-status document and alternative accepted by the mission. Nor do we assume every visit needs a notarised or apostilled invitation. Its format, original and authentication method follow the applicable instructions.

Part of the invitationWhat it explainsWhat to check
InviterName, required identity and permanent addressAccurate status and an accepted host document
InviteesThe visitor list and required detailsNames and passports match the file
ContactTelephone number and required contact channelThe host is reachable and details are current
Relationship and purposeFamily relationship and temporary-visit reasonConsistency with the form and documents
Duration and accommodationIntended dates and place of stayAgreement with bookings and the itinerary
Undertaking and fundingFood and accommodation support as required and financial instructionsThe genuine commitment and ability evidence where requested

6. Host and relationship documents: obtain what the case requires

The checklist may request evidence of the host's identity, address, lawful status and relationship to the visitor, and income or accommodation documents. Check the document intended for each item, particularly if the host is not Turkish or their address or passport has changed. A relative living in a city does not establish a particular address or accommodation for the entire period.

If relationship evidence is requested, choose a document actually showing that relationship and the required translation or authentication. Similar family names or a personal message do not replace an official document where one is required. Equally, do not collect marriage and birth certificates for every visitor when irrelevant or unrequested.

The host here is not necessarily a family residence sponsor in the legal sense of that route. Do not import its year-of-residence requirement, income formula, criminal-record or SGK conditions. Financial and accommodation support for a visit is assessed under visa instructions and the actual file.

7. Funding: explain who pays and what demonstrates it

Divide the budget into travel, accommodation, food, transport, health coverage, fees and documents. The visitor may provide their own resources, a relative may host or cover expenses under the required undertaking, and the authority may request evidence concerning both parties. Do not automatically substitute the host's promise for assessment of the applicant's resources.

Choose evidence reflecting the real funding source and required period: salary, business, pension, account records or documented support according to the checklist. Explain a large recent sum if requested, and do not manufacture account activity. This guide gives no lira balance or bank-statement period that guarantees approval.

If the cost-sharing arrangement or journey length changes, update the invitation, explanation and related evidence. An amount sufficient for a short visit does not automatically justify extending the plan to months, and owning a home or account does not confer entry rights.

8. The visit file: an organisational checklist, not a universal one

Obtain the current checklist for your category and mission, identifying the original, copy, format and language for each document. Compare names, passport numbers, dates and addresses across the papers before the appointment, and keep a complete copy for reference without sharing it publicly.

Check passport validity. The general rule requires at least 60 days beyond the authorised stay, subject to applicable exceptions. A precautionary recommendation or document- or carrier-specific condition may also apply. Do not replace your own rule with a figure from another person's experience.

9. Local mission instructions do not become rules for everyone

The Turkish Embassy in Maputo's information note published on 6 January 2025 provides a local example. It separates tourist visits from family unification and lists hotel, accommodation or invitation details for the stay, alongside income and return-commitment evidence. The example helps explain a coherent file; it does not transfer the checklist to every country.

Photo numbers and dimensions, bank-statement periods, currencies, fees, payment methods, application timing and attendance follow applicable instructions. We do not transfer Maputo's six-month bank statement, two photographs or recommendation to apply three months ahead to every visitor, or infer an invitation-authentication requirement that was not stated as a universal condition.

If your mission requests translation, authentication, an original invitation or a different form, verify it before paying. Do not rely on a checklist your relative forwards from a residence application inside Türkiye or another visitor's application at a different mission.

10. Application steps from category selection to submission

Start early enough for appointments, issuing documents and review, but this guide sets no single application or processing period for every mission. Follow the authorised service for your circumstances and retain control of contact details even if using legitimate assistance.

  1. Identify the temporary-visit purpose, nationality, passport, residence country, duration and relevant earlier visits.
  2. Check exemption, electronic eligibility or a consular application, and identify the mission or authorised centre and correct category.
  3. Agree with the host on address, period, undertaking and expense-sharing, and prepare the required invitation and documents.
  4. Obtain your current application checklist and organise passport, photographs, funding, accommodation, coverage, return evidence and translation where needed.
  5. Complete the form with matching information and retain its reference, then book or follow submission instructions.
  6. Review fees, services, payment method and refund conditions before paying, and retain receipts.
  7. Attend or submit through the permitted method with required originals and copies, and keep submission evidence.
  8. Follow additional-document or interview requests and the decision through the appropriate channel, responding within the required deadline.
  9. Receive the passport, read the outcome and permission conditions, then match travel, entry and departure to the document issued.

11. Fees and timing: distinguish the service from the decision

Separate the visa fee, centre service charge and any optional service, then add insurance, translation, authentication and transport as needed. Verify the amount, currency and payment method for your mission, passport and entry type. Do not use a residence card charge or a previous application's price as the visit fee.

Ask what each item includes and about cancellation or non-refund conditions before paying. A fee payment or passport-delivery service does not guarantee approval. A mission's recommendation to prepare early is neither a guaranteed decision date nor the same number of months required in every country.

Separate finding an appointment and preparing the file from assessment and passport return. Clarification, documents or an interview may be requested. Do not base a large financial commitment on an assumed issue date.

12. Follow-up, missing documents and changed plans

Keep the application number, proof of submission, receipts, checklist copy and correspondence. Use the mission's or centre's channel for your application, rather than treating electronic visa support as the tracking service for every consular request. Monitor email, phone and junk folders.

If the authority requests a document, record what is needed, the deadline and submission method, and provide a response consistent with the file. No single deadline is assumed for every request, and another body's delay does not automatically extend it. If a document cannot be obtained or the host or dates change, explain and ask how to update the application instead of retaining inaccurate information.

If you cannot attend the appointment or need your passport during processing, ask about rescheduling or retrieving the passport and its effect on the application. Do not assume cancelling an appointment or recovering a passport erases fees or leaves processing continuing in the same way.

13. Decision and passport collection: check what was actually issued

A passport-ready message is not itself approval. Follow personal collection, authorisation or delivery conditions where available, then examine the outcome. If a visa is issued, check name, passport number, type, entries, validity for use, permitted stay and any stated conditions.

If there is an error, contact the issuing authority before travelling and retain its instructions rather than altering the document yourself or relying on an oral promise at the airport. If refused, read what you were notified and the procedure available through that authority. Do not apply the six-month rule for reapplying for residence for the same purpose to every visa refusal.

The next step may involve clarification, correction or a new application depending on the case, but adding another invitation does not guarantee approval. Review expenses, bookings and amendment conditions without assuming every fee is refundable or a universal appeal deadline exists.

14. Entry, the visit and departure

Carry the passport, required permission, hosting and contact information, return plan, resources and required coverage in a form you can present if asked. A visa or invitation does not guarantee admission. Arrival decisions depend on meeting the conditions and the competent authorities' checks.

After entry, observe the purpose, stay and entries applicable to your circumstances. Distinguish the last date for using a visa from the allowed stay and count previous visits where required. Changing the return booking or the host wanting you to stay longer does not extend permission.

Do not work merely because you are staying with a relative, or treat the visit as family residence, citizenship or a guaranteed later application. If the actual purpose changes, examine its route, eligibility and procedure with the competent authority before lawful stay ends. This guide does not authorise extra stay.

StageWhat to keepWhat it does not establish on its own
Before departurePassport, permission, invitation, itinerary and required coverageAn invitation or booking is not guaranteed boarding or admission
On arrivalHost address and contact, purpose, return and resourcesA relative's status does not remove official checks
During the visitPermission dates, plan and genuine changesVisa validity is not the entire allowed stay
When changing travelAmended booking and a review of days and entriesChanging a ticket does not extend permission
On departureTravel documents, exit record and onward destination requirementsA booking alone is not proof of actual departure

15. If hosting changes or travel cannot happen on time

If the host moves or can no longer accommodate you or cover costs, update accommodation, funding and the explanation through the required channel. A hotel or different host is subject to acceptance and documents, not merely replacing a name in an old letter without explaining the change.

If assessment is delayed until travel dates change, ask the authority about the application and reservations before assuming a document will be issued with new dates. After issue, check whether revised travel falls within validity, permitted stay and entries, and whether the transit route requires other permission.

If something prevents departure during the visit, promptly seek case-specific instructions from the competent authority instead of waiting to overstay. We give no general extension for a relative's illness, a cancelled flight or a new payment, and invent no family-visit grace period.

16. Two examples for organising a file without promising approval

First example: an adult mother wants to visit her adult son living in Türkiye for three weeks, then return to work. She checks her passport and application-country rules and prepares with him a clear invitation, accommodation address, food and accommodation support arrangements and required documents. She provides resource and return evidence under the checklist. She does not import family residence sponsor requirements to her son or assume their relationship grants residence, and chooses travel arrangements according to amendment conditions and the actual decision.

Second example: a husband temporarily visits his wife, spending some nights with her and some in a hotel during a tour. He explains the actual form, invitation, accommodation and budget arrangements and verifies the required category rather than choosing reunification by name alone. If the aim changes to living together, the visit letter is not an automatic conversion; separate entry and residence assessment is needed. These examples organise thinking rather than establish personal eligibility, a universal checklist or an awarded stay period.

Frequently asked questions

Is having a relative in Türkiye enough to enter?
No. Check passport, nationality, purpose and the required exemption or visa. Kinship and an invitation do not guarantee admission.

Is a family visit the same as family residence?
No. A temporary visit differs from applying to live with eligible family. Each procedure has its conditions and file.

Do I always need a consular visa to visit a relative?
An exemption or electronic route may apply under its conditions, or a consular application may be needed. Choose according to your passport, purpose and official instructions, not the relative's status alone.

Does Gulf residence confer the exemption for Gulf citizens?
A nationality rule does not transfer simply through residence. Check the visitor's passport, document, purpose and duration.

Can every relative sponsor family residence?
That is not what a visit grants. Family residence eligibility is separate, with no general right for every parent, sibling or adult relative because of an invitation.

Is a notarised invitation required in every case?
We do not assume that. Check whether your mission requires it and its format, original and authentication. Content guidance when submitting it does not create a worldwide notarisation rule.

Which invitation details matter?
Inviter and invitee identity, address, contact, relationship, purpose, period, food and accommodation arrangements and the required undertaking, with details matching the file.

What if the host is a foreign national?
Check their identity document, status, address and the inviter-data alternative the mission accepts. Do not enter an identity number or status they do not hold.

Does the host's undertaking replace my resources?
Not automatically. The authority may assess visitor and host resources and expense arrangements. The file still needs consistent evidence under the checklist.

Should I use the family residence income standard for a visit?
No. That route's sponsor income formula, residence period, criminal-record and coverage conditions are not a general short-visit visa checklist.

Do I need a hotel booking if staying with a relative?
Review accepted accommodation alternatives. Do not impose a hotel where the authority accepts hosting or invitation details, and explain every actual part of the journey.

Should I provide a six-month statement and two photos as in Maputo?
Those are local details in the reviewed example, not a rule for every mission. Follow the bank period, photo specifications and number required for your circumstances.

Should I buy a non-refundable ticket to prove return?
A reservation or ticket as requested is evidence within the file, not an approval guarantee. Check the requirement and amendment conditions before an unrecoverable financial commitment.

Is the residence card fee the visit fee?
No. Visa, service, insurance and documents are separate from a residence card charge. Check your application's assessment, currency and exemption if applicable.

Is there one preparation or decision period?
No. Appointment, document preparation, assessment and passport collection are separate stages. A mission's early-application recommendation is not a promise for everyone.

Does a passport-ready message mean approval?
No. Receive the outcome and read the issued document, details and conditions, then plan travel accordingly.

After visa refusal, must I wait six months as with residence?
Do not transfer a residence-application rule to visas. Review the outcome and the mission's available procedure and requirements for another application or review where available.

Is visa validity the length of my visit?
They are not necessarily the same. Check permitted stay, entries, validity and previous visits where relevant instead of relying on one date.

Does visiting a spouse allow work or staying to live together?
Not automatically. A visit is neither work authorisation nor residence. A changed purpose requires its independent route, conditions and procedure.

What if the host changes or I cannot leave?
Report changes and promptly seek case-specific instructions through the competent authority, updating evidence and plans. Do not treat a new invitation or cancelled flight as a general stay extension.
