A phone can feel like the most useful thing in your pocket in Türkiye.
- Find your way around on public transport.
- Pay bills.
- Check exchange rates.
- Translate signs and everyday conversations.
1) Public transport, taxis and ferries
Metro and bus information in İstanbul: Metro İstanbul and Moovit- Depending on the app and the information supplied by the operator, you can check:
- Metro and tram routes.
- The nearest stop or station.
- Timetables or estimated bus and train arrival times. Live estimates can change.
- Trafi: its developer’s app listing, checked in October 2026, lists Lithuanian cities rather than İstanbul. It should therefore not be relied on as an İstanbul journey planner.
- Depending on the app and the information supplied by the operator, you can check:
Taxi apps: BiTaksi, and iTaksi where currently offered- Request a taxi from your phone in an area covered by the service.
- Check an estimated fare before setting off, where available. The final metered fare, tolls and any disclosed service charge may differ from the estimate.
- Having the route, driver details and a trip record can help you query a fare, although an app does not eliminate the possibility of overcharging.
Ferry information: İDO and Şehir Hatları- Use the operator’s official app or mobile website to check departures between the European and Asian sides of İstanbul, or to coastal destinations served by that operator. Check the exact pier, route and any cancellations.
2) Payments and bills
Your bank’s app- Pay supported electricity, water, gas and internet bills.
- Make domestic or international transfers supported by your account, subject to the bank’s fees and conditions.
- Check your balance and transaction history.
Electronic wallets and payment apps- Some services allow you to:
- Top up a mobile phone.
- Pay bills or donate to supported charities.
- Buy public-transport tickets in participating cities.
- Availability depends on the provider, identification requirements and the city concerned.
- Some services allow you to:
3) Maps and accommodation
Google Maps and Yandex Maps- Find places, read restaurant reviews and estimate journey times by public transport or car, where the relevant data is available. Check the route against local signs and operator information.
Hotel and apartment booking platforms- Examples include Booking.com, Airbnb and local platforms. Check whether the platform accepts your intended booking from your current location; availability and local requirements differ.
- Compare accommodation prices across Turkish cities, including the total payable, cancellation conditions and any extra charges.
4) Translation and learning Turkish
Google Translate- Translate everyday words and conversations into or from Turkish, using supported modes.
- Use camera or image translation to help read a sign, menu or a simple piece of paperwork. Machine translation can miss context; have important official documents checked by a qualified person.
Turkish-learning apps- Duolingo, Busuu and other language apps can help you practise useful vocabulary, depending on the Turkish courses they currently offer.
- Focus on words you will actually use:
- Neighbourhood and place names.
- Supermarket vocabulary.
- Expressions for transport and visits to public offices.
5) Exchange rates and shopping prices
Currency-conversion apps- Check an indicative exchange rate between the Turkish lira and your home currency. The displayed rate may differ from the rate offered by your bank or transfer provider.
- Useful occasions include:
- Shopping online.
- Transferring money into or out of Türkiye. Compare the final amount after fees and exchange-rate margins.
Supermarket and retailer apps- Compare current offers and prices.
- Look for any eligible online coupons or loyalty points, checking the promotion’s conditions.
6) Practical tips for using apps
Arrange a suitable mobile-data plan or a reliable home connection; many everyday services depend on internet access.
Protect your information:- Download apps from official stores, such as Google Play or the App Store, and check the publisher.
- Do not enter banking details into an app you do not trust.
Try the app before you need it:- Open your transport app before leaving, check that the map works and make sure your travel card or wallet has sufficient credit.
A practical starting point:
A small selection of useful apps can make everyday life easier when you need to:
- Use public transport.
- Make payments.
- Find your way around.
- Understand the language.
