Turkish Dishes to Try on Your First Visit

Türkiye has countless restaurants, and their menus can be full of unfamiliar names for a first-time visitor.
This guide introduces the Turkish dishes you should try at least once.

1) Kebap – Turkish Kebabs 🍢

  • Well-known varieties include Adana kebabı, Urfa kebabı and İskender kebabı.
  • Often served with bread, ayran (a yoghurt drink) and salad.
  • If you prefer milder food, choose Urfa kebabı rather than Adana and confirm how spicy it is.

2) Döner 🥙

  • Meat or chicken roasted on a rotating spit.
  • Served in Turkish bread as a sandwich, or on a plate with rice and salad.
  • A quick option found in almost every city.

3) Menemen – Turkish Eggs with Tomatoes and Peppers 🍳

  • Eggs cooked with tomatoes, peppers and olive oil, sometimes with cheese or sucuk.
  • One of the best-known Turkish breakfast dishes.
  • Enjoy it with fresh bread; it can make sticking to a diet rather difficult.

4) Pide and Lahmacun 🍕

  • Pide: an elongated flatbread topped with cheese, meat or sucuk, often compared to Turkish pizza.
  • Lahmacun: thin dough topped with minced meat and vegetables, rolled up with parsley and lemon.

5) Balık – Fish by the Sea 🐟

  • Türkiye has extensive coastlines, and fish plays an important part in its cuisine.
  • Popular choices include grilled fish, balık ekmek (a fish sandwich), sardines and anchovies, especially in the north.

6) Börek – Filled Pastries 🥐

  • Thin pastry filled with cheese, spinach or meat.
  • Eaten for breakfast or as a light snack with tea.

7) Turkish Desserts 🍮

  • Baklava with pistachios or walnuts.
  • Hot künefe with a cheese filling.
  • Sütlaç (rice pudding), trileçe and kadayıf desserts in various forms.
