Trabzon Restaurants and Cafés: What to Eat and Where to Relax
What should you order, where should you sit, and how can you choose a place that suits your trip and family?
What should you order, where should you sit, and how can you choose a place that suits your trip and family?
Trabzon offers much more than kebabs. Black Sea cooking has its own character, from kuymak to Akçaabat köfte, Sürmene pide and Hamsiköy rice pudding. Start by deciding what you want: a local meal, a relaxed breakfast, a scenic stop or somewhere convenient for your day's route. This guide helps you choose without a promotional shortlist or fixed prices that change with the season.
What to eat in Trabzon: understanding the menu
| Dish | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Kuymak | A hot dish based on cornmeal, butter and cheese. | A local breakfast option; ask about the portion size and how many people it serves. |
| Akçaabat köftesi | Grilled meatballs associated with Akçaabat. | Ask about the portion weight and whether salads or extras are included. |
| Sürmene pidesi | A local style of Turkish pide. | Choose the filling from the menu and check whether egg costs extra. |
| Hamsi | Anchovies, among the Black Sea region's best-known foods, prepared in several ways. | Ask whether they are available fresh and how they are cooked; availability and quality depend on the season. |
| Karalahana — dark leafy cabbage | Used in soup and stuffed-leaf dishes. | Ask about ingredients if seeking a vegetarian choice; the name alone is not enough. |
| Hamsiköy sütlacı — rice pudding | A dessert associated with Hamsiköy. | Ask about nuts and toppings, particularly if you have an allergy. |
| Kaygana | A local dish resembling a pancake or omelette, depending on the recipe. | Check its ingredients if you avoid eggs or milk. |
Other familiar regional products include Vakfıkebir bread and Tonya butter. You do not need to try everything in one sitting: choose kuymak at breakfast, köfte or pide for another meal, and a dessert during a highland outing. This gives the trip variety without ordering numerous dishes just for photographs.
Choosing an area for a restaurant or café
Central Trabzon and Meydan: Useful when you want a meal near your accommodation or walking route. Compare several menus rather than choosing only because a restaurant is close to the hotel. If travelling with a pushchair or someone who tires when walking, check the entrance, lift and toilet access before sitting down.Akçaabat: A logical place to try the local köfte during an outing west of Trabzon. Look for the dish by name, then check recent meal photographs and the portion price: photographs of the frontage say little about the food.
Boztepe: Suits tea with a city view. A scenic setting does not necessarily mean a broad food menu. Check the weather, indoor or outdoor seating and any stated minimum food or drink order before settling in; distinguish that from a separate table fee.
Uzungöl: Consider breakfast or lunch as part of the day's outing. A lakeside location can affect prices and crowds, so compare it with options a little farther away. Alabalık on the menu means trout: do not automatically equate it with salmon or assume it was caught wild in the lake.
Sürmene and Hamsiköy: Fit a pide or rice-pudding stop into your actual route. Avoid a lengthy detour for a dish if it would use up most of the day.
Turkish breakfast: ask before ordering
Serpme kahvaltı means a spread of small breakfast dishes brought to the table. Ask whether the price is per person, whether each adult must order a portion, whether tea, kuymak and eggs are included or extra, and how children are charged. A photograph of a large spread does not answer these questions. If two of you want a light meal, ordering individual dishes may suit you better than a full spread. Start with a main dish, bread and tea, then order more if needed. Families should first ask how the portions work: sharing a large dish may be clearer than ordering a portion for everyone without knowing its size.
Using reviews to find a suitable venue
Read recent reviews and focus on food, transparent billing and service speed. Look for recurring complaints rather than judging from one comment, and find photographs of menus and dishes actually ordered. A high rating from a handful of reviews is not enough to compare fairly with a long-established venue.Consider the reviewer's expectations. Someone seeking a quiet café may dislike a busy family restaurant, or the reverse. Judge the venue against your own needs. If reviews mention a dish no longer shown on the menu, ask before travelling rather than relying on an old photograph.
Budget for the whole meal
Before ordering, check dish prices, drinks and extras. Türkiye's rule effective from 30 January 2026 prohibits compulsory service, table, cover and similar additional charges at restaurants, cafés and comparable food-and-drink businesses; tips remain voluntary. Ask whether fish is priced per portion or by weight, and whether the quoted weight is before cooking. At cafés, check drinks, extras and any stated minimum food or drink order, rather than accepting a separate seating fee. Request an itemised bill before paying and keep the receipt if there is a discrepancy. For a fair comparison, compare meals of similar size and ingredients, rather than a single köfte dish with a package including starters and drinks. Older photographs and videos can show the setting, but the current menu determines the prices to check.
Children and food allergies
Check highchairs, baby-changing facilities, smoking around nearby seating and access from the car. Order in stages if children do not eat full portions, and ask about preparation time before choosing a dish that may take a while. If you have an allergy, name the ingredient clearly, such as milk, nuts, eggs, wheat or fish. Removing an ingredient from the top of a dish does not address possible cross-contact in the kitchen. Do not infer ingredients from a food's colour or a description such as “natural”.
Useful Turkish phrases
| Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Menüyü görebilir miyim? | May I see the menu? |
| Bu fiyat kişi başı mı? | Is this price per person? |
| Neler dahil? | What is included? |
| Acısız olsun, lütfen. | No hot pepper, please. |
| Hesabı alabilir miyim? | May I have the bill? |
A simple plan: Choose one local meal and a café near your sightseeing route, leaving the rest of the time for visiting. If you like a place, note the dish and its price at the time: that is more useful than a general claim that everything there is excellent.
