Hazal Burun and Emircan Haney won the women’s and men’s individual European compound titles in Antalya in May 2026, alongside a Turkish bronze in the men’s team event. Their results provide a precise picture of Türkiye’s success in this discipline, from the women’s final to the men’s deciding shoot-off.

Burun, 21, became the first Turkish woman to win the individual European compound title. She faced Denmark’s Tanja Gellenthien in the final, with the contest level after the third and fourth ends before Burun settled it in the last end. The title followed her European bronze in 2024 and was her first major senior outdoor individual title.
Emircan Haney’s final against Poland’s Przemyslaw Konecki ended level at 147–147. In the shoot-off, Haney scored ten to his opponent’s nine, becoming the first Turkish man to win the title since Yakup Yıldız in 2021. Haney also added team bronze to his individual gold, alongside Batuhan Akcaoğlu and Yağız Sezgin.

An individual compound match consists of five ends of three arrows each. The scores of all 15 arrows are added together, with a maximum of 150 points. The final’s score therefore shows how close both archers came to the maximum, while the tie explains why an extra arrow was needed to determine the winner.
If the scheduled arrows leave the scores level, a shoot-off decides the match. Distance to the centre of the target is used when necessary to separate arrows. In Haney’s final, the arrow scores themselves were decisive: ten points against nine. Distinguishing the original total from the shoot-off result makes the outcome clear — the tie was not the end of the match.
Compound archery differs from Olympic recurve in both equipment and distance. A compound bow uses pulleys and cables to reduce the force needed to hold it at full draw, together with a mechanical release aid and a magnifying sight. Outdoor compound events are shot at 50 metres, compared with 70 metres for recurve. The compound target face measures 80 centimetres, with its four outer rings removed; the recurve face measures 122 centimetres. Knowing these details helps viewers identify the discipline and interpret its scores correctly.

The championships also played a role in qualification for the European Games scheduled for Istanbul in 2027. Antalya was the main qualifying event, with 23 national associations securing quota places through their performances. The Games have 96 recurve places and 32 compound places, and 78 quotas were allocated following the Antalya championships.
Türkiye’s route differs from that of other participants because it will host the Games. The host nation automatically receives the maximum eight places: three men and three women in recurve, plus one man and one woman in compound. Those eight places should therefore not be interpreted as medals or places won through sporting results in Antalya.
Quotas belong to national associations, which select their athletes later. A country securing a place does not confirm the participation of a particular individual. An additional qualifying opportunity was announced for the European Grand Prix in Antalya in March 2027. That remains a future event, separate from the achievements already recorded in May 2026.
These results offer three points to watch at future events: Burun’s development in individual competition, Haney’s ability to sustain his scoring accuracy, and the men’s squad’s continued presence in team events. These are questions to follow, rather than predictions of particular results. Start by identifying the bow type and event category, then read the score and the method of deciding the match. That approach connects each medal to an understandable sporting contest and keeps qualification within its own framework.
