Travelling with Cats and Dogs Within Türkiye: Trains, Flights, Buses and Local Transport
Plan each leg when travelling with a pet, from the transfer to the station through to your destination. Airline, train, bus and local transport rules differ: approval for one service does not cover the others.
Start with the journey and your animal’s needs
Identify the animal’s species, age and weight including its carrier, your outbound and return route and every connection. Ask a veterinarian whether travel is suitable, particularly for an ill, young or breathing-impaired animal; do not give a sedative on your own.
Check identification, health and vaccination records and documents requested by the operator, and bring originals and any copies required. International entry and transit require a separate check with the countries concerned; this guide covers journeys within Türkiye.
Flights: reserve the animal’s place before fixing plans
Ask the airline whether it accepts the species, breed and age, whether carriage is in the cabin or a designated aircraft compartment, and how many animal places are available on each flight. A passenger booking alone does not guarantee acceptance; obtain flight-specific confirmation before buying inflexible arrangements.
As one example, Turkish Airlines’ published cabin conditions set a maximum combined animal-and-carrier weight of 8 kg, with carrier dimensions of no more than 23 cm high, 30 cm wide and 40 cm long. The airline requires a purpose-made soft-sided carrier or bag, closed throughout the flight and placed under the seat in front. These are that airline’s conditions, not a limit for all carriers; they can change. Check current sizes, charges, deadlines and restrictions for your ticket and return, and notify the airline of any change of operator or connection.
Trains and intercity buses: check the actual service
For trains, check the service and carriage, where the animal travels, carrier requirements, ticket and documents. Do not transfer a high-speed train rule to another service or sleeper; ask the train operator before buying.
For intercity buses practices differ by operator and route. Before paying, ask whether your animal is accepted, where it travels, the required carrier and conditions for temperature, ventilation and stops. Do not assume an ordinary luggage compartment is suitable or hand over the animal without knowing its safety arrangements. Choose another mode if a safe suitable option is unavailable.
Local transport and accommodation are part of the plan
| Journey leg | Check before booking | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| City metro or bus | Animal, carrier and congestion rules with the operator | Line name and answer or policy |
| Car or private transfer | Driver acceptance, carrier and secure positioning | Booking confirmation and animal details |
| Hotel | Acceptance in the room and conditions, fees and facilities | Written confirmation linked to booking |
| Guide dog | Specific operator procedures and documents | Dog documents and operator instructions |
Istanbul and Ankara have different local instructions. Check the operator of the actual line and time. Do not treat a guide dog as an ordinary pet before checking its specific rules.
Prepare the carrier and travel day
Choose a secure, ventilated carrier suitable for the animal and operator’s dimensions, allowing movement as required on that service. Add identification and contact details and acclimatize the animal beforehand. Do not open the carrier in a station or vehicle unless the operator permits it and the setting is safe.
Plan water, breaks and cleaning with the veterinarian and carrier, and monitor signs of distress. Keep documents and booking numbers accessible and allow time for acceptance and connections without assuming one universal deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Does airline acceptance cover a local connection?
No. Check each service, operator and connection individually.
Can every animal travel in the cabin?
No. Acceptance depends on species, weight, carrier, airline and availability.
Can a pet automatically travel with bus luggage?
Do not assume this. Ask the operator about placement, equipment and safe conditions before booking.
Do Istanbul rules apply in other cities?
No. Check the local operator and actual service.
Do guide dogs follow the same booking process as pets?
They may have specific procedures; ask the operator what documents and confirmation it requires.
