♿ Getting Around Istanbul for Older and Disabled Travellers
Entrances, lifts and alternative routes from your hotel to your destination

Plan a journey you can complete, including the streets, passageways and return trip. The train may suit you, but the station entrance could involve steps, the accessible exit may be far from your destination, or the final walk could be uphill. Start with the traveller's own needs: how much walking and standing is manageable, whether they use a wheelchair or another mobility aid, whether they need a companion, and where they can rest. No single route suits every older traveller or every disability.

🧭 Assess Your Needs Before Looking at the Lines

Write down the practical requirements. Can the traveller manage a small step? Do they need a lift at every change of level? Does the wheelchair fold? Can they transfer to a car seat, or must they remain in their wheelchair inside a suitably equipped vehicle? These details help station staff or a transport company far more than simply saying that an older person is travelling with you.

Include what you will need throughout the day: a companion who can help, time to rest, space for the equipment and its charger if required. Set a reasonable limit for walking and waiting based on the person's abilities and usual arrangements, then use it to compare routes. Do not let the shortest time on an app steer you into unsuitable passageways. If the needs relate to a particular medical condition, follow the arrangements familiar to the traveller and their care team rather than improvising changes during the trip.

🏨 Your Hotel Is Part of the Access Route

Ask the hotel about a step-free entrance, the width of the passage your equipment will use, and a suitable vehicle drop-off point. Request a photograph of the entrance and clear directions to reception, and confirm that the room and facilities meet the needs you have described. An advertisement saying “near the metro” does not explain the kerb height or slope between the hotel and the lift.

Hotels in areas such as Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu may be on narrow or sloping streets. Avoid treating a whole neighbourhood as either easy or difficult; assess the specific street and entrance. If a car cannot reach the door, ask about the distance and surface from the drop-off point. Changing an unsuitable hotel before travelling may make the entire trip easier than arranging an extra vehicle for every journey.

🛗 Check Four Stages at Every Station

StagePractical questionDetails you need
Street to ticket gatesCan I reach the gate without steps? The entrance name, lift or ramp, and route from the hotel
Gates to platformDoes the lift serve my train's direction? The platform, side, equipment location and current condition
Changing between linesIs the entire connecting route usable?Every lift needed, including any exit to street level
Exit to destinationAre the distance and surfaces suitable? The actual exit, pavements, crossings and building entrance
The whole chain matters. One working lift does not prove that the entire interchange is accessible, and a wheelchair symbol on a map does not tell you the passageway length or the condition of the street outside. Allow time to check before passing through the ticket gates, while it is still easy to choose an alternative.

🔎 Read Lift Notices Without Jumping to Conclusions

Open Metro İstanbul's official equipment-status page and find your departure, interchange and arrival stations. Read Konum for the location and Neden for the reason the equipment is out of service, rather than relying on the station name alone. The list may be filtered to faults; you may also need to check maintenance and refurbishment. A published return-to-service date is planned and can change. A missing date, or one that is close, does not establish that the equipment is working now.

A dated example from the guide illustrates this: its review on 7 October 2026 recorded maintenance on a particular Taksim lift between the southern ticket-gate/bus-stop area and Taksim Square, with a planned return on 31 October. This did not mean that every lift at Taksim station was out of service, nor did it identify an alternative entrance without asking staff. Read the location of the lift you need and confirm the available route with a member of staff. This is a dated example of how to interpret a notice, not a permanent description of the station or a live status update.

📌 Do Not Rely on Carrying a Wheelchair Up or Down Stairs: Request a step-free route or a suitable vehicle if none is available. Metro İstanbul's passenger rules prohibit using escalators with wheelchairs and direct passengers to lifts, or to staff for advice when a lift is unavailable.

🗣️ Signs and Asking for Help

PeronPlatformIdentify the train's direction before asking for the lift route
AktarmaInterchange / TransferAsk whether the connection between lines is step-free

Tekerlekli sandalyeWheelchairDescribe your requirements for the passageway or vehicle
You can show “Asansörlü giriş nerede?” — “Where is the entrance with a lift?” — together with your destination station. If you use a wheelchair, show “Tekerlekli sandalye ile hangi girişi kullanabilirim?” — “Which entrance can I use with a wheelchair?” A specific request and destination are more useful than a general question about “the metro”.

🚋 Example One: Sultanahmet to Eminönü

T1 serves Sultanahmet → Gülhane → Sirkeci → Eminönü towards Kabataş. The operator describes low-floor trams and ramped station entrances, so it is worth considering for a waterfront outing from the historic area. Still check the entrance route, boarding arrangements and the walk to the activity itself.

Steps: Check the route from your hotel to Sultanahmet station and ask for an entrance suitable for your equipment. Board towards Kabataş, get off at Eminönü, then use the accessible route to your destination. If you are visiting the Spice Bazaar or a ferry pier, identify its particular entrance or pier rather than walking between every nearby point.

Return: Take T1 towards Bağcılar to Sultanahmet. Consider whether the traveller can manage the walk back to the hotel after the activity. If crowds or boarding difficulties make this impractical, the planned alternative is a suitable vehicle from an accessible pick-up point near Eminönü to the agreed hotel drop-off point. Do not assume door-to-door access on a street where vehicles cannot reach the entrance.

🏙️ Example Two: Sultanahmet to Taksim

Consider T1 towards Kabataş, followed by F1 to Taksim, provided the lift route between street, platform and exit is available. At Kabataş, stop at an identifiable point and ask about the lift before descending. At Taksim, choose the exit that suits your destination rather than the nearest door to the platform.

This explains the connection; it does not guarantee that every wheelchair user can complete it every day. If an essential lift is unavailable and staff cannot identify another suitable route, you could change the outing to a waterfront visit without F1 or book an appropriate vehicle to Taksim. A longer route through several deep stations is not automatically a better alternative simply because an app suggests it.

Return: Take F1 to Kabataş, then T1 towards Bağcılar, subject to lift availability and service operation. Check the evening return before extending your outing, and keep a direct alternative available if fatigue increases or the service changes.

A ferry against the Istanbul skyline. The pier and your return connection are both part of planning the day.

🛍️ Example Three: Taksim to Şişli

If the lift chain is suitable, take M2 from Taksim towards Hacıosman to Osmanbey or Şişli-Mecidiyeköy, depending on your destination. Check the lift serving the entrance you intend to use and its route to the correct platform. On arrival, assess the distance from the accessible exit to your hotel or shopping-centre entrance; it may differ from the nearest stair exit.

Return: Take M2 towards Yenikapı to Taksim. If an entrance at your destination station is unavailable, ask about another entrance and a suitable outside route before boarding. Only choose a neighbouring station after checking the distance, crossings and gradients from it. A name that looks close on the map may involve more walking than the traveller can manage.

⛴️ Ferries: Check Both the Pier and the Vessel

Şehir Hatları describes accessibility arrangements including pier ramps, guidance and suitable spaces. Even so, check the departure pier, arrival pier and vessel operating your sailing, and ask the crew for boarding assistance if you use a wheelchair or have difficulty moving. Follow the crew's instructions and the conditions of the sailing for the final section of the gangway onto the vessel.

For example, travelling from Eminönü to Kadıköy on a published service, choose a suitable departure after speaking to pier staff, then consider an activity near the waterfront if it means less walking. Before leaving, check the Kadıköy → Eminönü return and your next connection to the hotel. If the weather deteriorates or boarding is not possible, compare an equipped vehicle with an alternative outing. Marmaray may require several lifts and transfers, so it is not an automatic solution for everyone.

🚌 Buses and Bus Stops

İETT works on vehicle and stop accessibility and on audio and visual information. When choosing a route, check the first and last stops and the paths to them. Ask the driver for boarding guidance if you need a ramp or designated space. Having a bus service in the neighbourhood does not guarantee that the particular stop is free of obstacles when you arrive.

Do not stand in the road looking for the door as the vehicle approaches. Choose a clear waiting point and keep your companion available to help, without having to manage excessive luggage. If the vehicle is unsuitable or full, consider the next bus or an available alternative. Allow a margin rather than making an important appointment depend on a single vehicle.

🚐 Confirm a Vehicle That Suits Your Wheelchair

A car whose boot can hold a folded wheelchair is different from a vehicle that lets the passenger board and remain in their wheelchair with suitable restraints. When booking, send the chair's dimensions and weight, whether it is powered or manual and foldable, and whether you can transfer to another seat. Request confirmation of these requirements and of the usable capacity once luggage is loaded.

Ask about the ramp or lift, entry height, restraint system and assistance required. “Large” or “VIP” is no substitute for these specifications. Confirm the inclusive price, meeting point and waiting arrangements, and inspect the vehicle before travelling. If a different vehicle arrives and does not meet your needs, request the agreed alternative rather than trying to solve the boarding problem by lifting the passenger manually.

✈️ From the Airport: A Separate Chain of Arrangements

Airport or airline assistance is separate from the car or metro journey to your hotel. Coordinate what you need at each stage and inform the carrier about your equipment under its conditions. After collecting your luggage, confirm the transport meeting point, suitable entrance and vehicle space before setting off.

At IST, M11 serves the airport with connections into the city; at SAW, M4 serves the airport. Checking lifts becomes more important if reaching the hotel requires one or more changes. If a passenger must remain in their wheelchair, or you have substantial luggage, consider suitable transport directly to the hotel from the outset. Put the airport code in the return confirmation: “Istanbul airport” is not enough if your flight departs from Sabiha Gökçen.

⏱️ A Comfortable Day and a Realistic Budget

Choose one main visit followed by a nearby rest, with an optional extra activity. Include waiting for lifts, assistance and manageable walking in the route, rather than counting only the minutes on the train. An illustrative estimate of 20 minutes travelling, two passageways taking 10–20 minutes each, and 5–15 minutes waiting produces a total of 45–75 minutes before an additional rest. These are planning examples to replace with the actual details of your route.

Budget for the alternative, since a problem at an exit could require a suitable vehicle. Do not assume every visitor is entitled to a free travel card because of their age or disability. Eligibility, card type, documents and operator conditions need separate verification. Have an accepted ticket and sufficient credit ready, and ask for clarification before passing through the gates if you have a special travel product.

📱 What Should You Save for Offline Use?

  • Your hotel's address in Turkish, a photograph of its entrance and the suitable drop-off point.
  • Outbound and return stations, directions and entrances you have confirmed are suitable.
  • Contact numbers for a companion, the hotel and transport provider, with a written description of your requirements.
  • The booked vehicle's confirmation, capacity, specifications and price.
  • An equipment-status screenshot for reference, remembering that conditions change and you still need to ask staff.
If you have low vision, use an appropriate text size and an easy-to-read note, or a familiar text-to-speech function. If you have difficulty hearing, show your request in writing with the station and direction, and watch the display. Ask before guiding someone or moving their wheelchair: assistance begins with the traveller's needs and instructions.

🔄 What If Equipment Fails During the Journey?

Stop at a safe point and ask staff about three options in order: another entrance or lift within the station, a usable route to an alternative station, and a place a suitable vehicle can reach. Do not pass out through the ticket gates on a guess if you do not know how you will reach the street. Explain your needs before changing level.

If the alternative involves a neighbouring station, ask for the outside route, distance and crossings, then compare them with the traveller's capabilities. If you choose a car, agree a meeting point you can actually reach and send its description to the provider. Check the return route as well; solving only the outbound problem could leave you facing it again in the evening. Keep the equipment details, station and time if you want to report the problem to the operator after arrival, explaining clearly what you needed.

❓ Important Questions

Is every metro station and exit suitable?
Do not assume so. Check the access chain, exit, street and current conditions.

Does a lift's return date mean it is working?
It is a planned date. Check again and request confirmation when travelling.

Is carrying a wheelchair on stairs a normal solution?
Do not build it into your plan. Look for a step-free route or suitable vehicle.

Will an ordinary taxi suit every wheelchair?
That depends on whether the passenger can transfer, the chair type and the available space. Remaining in the wheelchair requires different equipment.

Do I have to return by the same route?
Choose what suits the traveller's condition at the end of the day and the available equipment, with an alternative identified in advance.

📌 Source Review: 7 October 2026. Accessibility descriptions help with planning; equipment, entrances and transport availability must be checked at the time of use. Ask staff about the appropriate route before entering.
