Taking a Bicycle on Transport in Türkiye: Metro, Trains, Coaches and Flights
Bicycle rules vary by carrier and service, and may depend on bike type, time and capacity. Check every leg before booking.
Describe your bicycle
Record whether it is conventional or electric, whether it folds, its dimensions and weight when folded or packed, and the number of bikes. Ask each carrier on both outward and return legs before buying; acceptance by one does not guarantee acceptance by another.
Istanbul Metro: check the time
Metro İstanbul says single-person folding bicycles may travel during operating hours, while standard non-folding single-person bicycles are permitted outside 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00 on weekdays. At weekends the operator allows them throughout operating hours without a time restriction or extra charge. Tandem bicycles are not accepted. Check the current rules and your line before travel; do not apply these rules to Marmaray, ferries or other cities.
Do not ride inside a station or vehicle; walk beside the bicycle and follow staff instructions. Give older, disabled, pregnant and child-accompanying passengers priority when using lifts.
If the bicycle is in a large box, ask the operator about rules and size and weight limits for packaged loads; bike acceptance does not guarantee a box of any size is accepted.
Train and coach: ask about your service
Ask the train operator about your train and carriage, folding or packing, reservations, fees and storage. Do not assume high-speed and regional trains have identical rules.
For a coach, send the company the dimensions and number of bikes and ask about packaging, capacity and charges. Keep confirmation for your date and plan an alternative if the luggage hold is full.
Flights and electric bicycles
Turkish Airlines requires a bicycle reservation and robust cardboard or special packaging, with handlebars turned, saddle lowered and pedals and protruding parts removed under its instructions. This is one airline’s policy; check the operating carrier, capacity and fees for each flight before paying.
Turkish Airlines says motorised and electric bicycles are not accepted under its stated battery rules. Do not assume removing or carrying the battery separately makes a flight permissible; obtain a specific answer from the carrier for each component.
Ferries and connections
Ask the ferry operator about bicycle acceptance, boarding location, charges and storage, particularly for electric bikes or groups. Check each direction; do not assume metro rules apply.
Allow time for transfers, lifts, queues and packing. The quickest walking route may not suit a bicycle or large box.
Packing and proof at handover
Photograph the bicycle and its condition before handover, secure parts as instructed by the carrier and keep the confirmation and baggage receipt. Remove easily lost items and keep documents with you.
Inspect the bicycle on collection. If delayed or damaged, report it promptly, request a report and reference, and keep photographs and receipts. Claim conditions and deadlines depend on the carrier and journey.
A practical example
A traveller with a non-folding bike uses the metro and a flight. They check the metro rules and choose a permitted time, then secure airline confirmation and check box size and charges. They allow time for packing and handover and check the return separately.
Common questions
Do all trains accept an unpacked bicycle?
Do not assume so; check the train and the rules for your service.
Does every airline accept electric bicycles?
No. Check the carrier and its battery policy before buying.
Do Istanbul Metro hours apply to ferries?
No. Each operator has its own rules; check each leg.
