Sworn Translations in Türkiye: Requirements and Quality Checks
Official applications may require a sworn translation, a notarised translation or another specified form of certification. These are not interchangeable. Ask the receiving institution what it accepts before paying for translation or notarisation.
1. What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translator, yeminli tercüman, provides a translation under the applicable formal arrangements. For a notarised translation, the notary must be able to certify the translator's work; check that the translator is accepted by the notary handling the document. A general claim of being “registered” is not a substitute for checking the required certification.
2. Documents that may need it
Examples include passports, birth and family records, diplomas and transcripts, medical or insurance records, contracts, undertakings, powers of attorney and court documents. Whether a sworn or notarised translation is necessary depends on the specific application and recipient.
3. When it may be unnecessary
The institution may accept the original language, a permitted English version, an internal translation or an official multilingual document. Confirm this directly. Do not assume that every official foreign-language document must go through the same procedure.
4. Translation, notarisation and apostille
For use in Türkiye, a Turkish sworn translation and notarial certification may be required. For use abroad, the recipient may require a translation, notarisation and/or an apostille or legalisation of the original or translation. The order depends on which signature is being authenticated and the destination's rules. An apostille does not certify the translation's accuracy or replace all other requirements.
5. Choosing and briefing a translator
- Provide a clear, complete copy and the receiving institution's requirements.
- Ask how names will match the passport and other records.
- Check the date format and all identifying numbers.
- Confirm whether the quote includes notarisation and any necessary interpreting appointment.
- Request a final factual check before certification: names, document numbers, dates, issuing authority, stamps and notes.
6. Frequent causes of problems
These include inconsistent name spellings, incorrect place names, a wrong passport digit or date of birth, an omitted page or stamp, and missing certification expressly required by the recipient. Make sure alterations are handled through the translator and notary rather than editing a certified document yourself.
Common questions
Does every sworn translation require notarisation? No; follow the recipient's requirements.
Can I translate it myself? Only if the receiving body accepts that form. Where a sworn or notarised translation is required, an ordinary self-translation does not meet the requirement.
Correct names, complete content and the appropriate certification reduce avoidable delays, but acceptance remains subject to the receiving authority's rules.
