Trains in Türkiye: High-Speed and Conventional Intercity Services
Can you travel between Turkish cities by train? Is Istanbul to Ankara or Konya possible, and is high-speed rail practical for a visitor?
This guide introduces Türkiye's passenger trains: high-speed YHT services, conventional trains between selected cities, and when rail fits an itinerary.
High-speed trains: YHT
YHT stands for Yüksek Hızlı Tren — high-speed train.- Where they run:
- Useful corridors include Ankara, Eskişehir and Konya, with services connecting Istanbul as well.
- The network also includes Karaman and Sivas services. These are examples, not a promise that every pair has a direct train; search your actual stations and travel date.
- Istanbul services use specified stations, including Söğütlüçeşme, Pendik or Halkalı according to the train. None should be assumed to mean a departure from Sultanahmet or Taksim. Check your ticket's station and the hotel journey.
- Advantages:
- Often quicker than a coach on a suitable corridor.
- A comfortable option for many medium-distance journeys.
- Published departures and identifiable stations make planning straightforward.
- Limitations:
- The network does not provide a direct YHT journey to every tourist destination, including Antalya and Trabzon.
- Stations may require additional transport to your hotel or sightseeing area.
When YHT is a useful choice
An itinerary around central Anatolia:- For example, Ankara, Eskişehir and Konya.
- Compare the available YHT services between your chosen stops.
You are already in a city with a YHT station:- A suitable train may take you to another city on its route without detouring through Istanbul or a major airport.
An Istanbul, Black Sea and Antalya holiday:- Rail is not usually the main link for this combination.
- Domestic flights, intercity coaches and private or hire cars generally provide the relevant connections.
Conventional intercity trains
Conventional trains also link selected cities. They can be useful for the right route or as part of the travel experience, although they are less often the first choice for a tightly scheduled sightseeing trip than coaches or flights.- What to expect:
- Slower journeys than YHT.
- More intermediate stops on many services.
- Potentially a good fit if you enjoy rail travel itself or are staying near a useful line.
- The main planning questions:
- Does the departure and arrival time fit your itinerary?
- How will you reach the departure station and leave the arrival station?

Booking a train ticket
Online:- Use TCDD Taşımacılık's official ticket website or official app, reached through the operator's channels.
- Choose the actual departure and arrival stations, travel date and available departure.
- Read the train type — YHT or conventional — if alternatives are offered, and check the full itinerary before paying.
At a station:- Use the station ticket office and confirm its opening hours and the train's exact station.
Plan ahead:- Popular YHT departures can sell out on weekends and during busy seasons. Book once your required date is available rather than relying on a seat immediately before travel.
Should a first-time visitor rely on trains?
- For Istanbul, the Black Sea region, Antalya or Cappadocia:
- Expect flights, coaches and cars to handle more of the itinerary than rail.
- Check each destination rather than assuming a train goes directly to a resort or village.
- For Ankara and suitable inland cities:
- Rail, particularly YHT, may be an excellent choice for selected legs.
- For railway enthusiasts:
- Include one or two suitable rail journeys as experiences in their own right.
- Keep the rest of the sightseeing plan practical instead of requiring every leg to use a train.
Practical checks and common mistakes
Assuming rail reaches every destination:- Türkiye is large and its passenger network does not cover every tourist area.
- Flights and coaches remain important for travel between many holiday destinations.
Forcing rail into an unsuitable route:- For places such as Antalya or Trabzon, check the relevant flight and road options instead of inventing a direct train connection.
Choosing rail where it fits:- Your two stations are on an operating service.
- Departure time and station access suit your accommodation.
- The total price and arrival time work for the day's plans.
Plan by route:
YHT is a significant part of Türkiye's transport system, but it is not automatically the best choice for a holiday focused on Istanbul, the Black Sea coast and beach resorts.
Use rail where its route, stations and timing work, and combine it with domestic flights, coaches and cars where those serve you better. Judge each leg by your itinerary, time and budget rather than assuming one mode should carry the whole trip.
