Kahramanmaraş lies in southern Türkiye within the Mediterranean geographical region. Known for its history of resistance and its celebrated ice cream, it combines mountain scenery, a long cultural inheritance and Anatolian traditions. Reconstruction after the February 2023 earthquakes continues to affect parts of the city and visitor access.
Mountain ranges associated with the Taurus system surround the city, with woodland and upland recreation areas in the wider province. Maraş Castle and Kahramanmaraş Archaeology Museum are important elements of its heritage. Museum collections cover several ancient and later periods; confirm current opening arrangements and restoration access before visiting either site.
Maraş dondurması is famous for its dense, elastic texture and distinctive serving style. It is traditionally made with milk, particularly goat's milk, sugar and salep. The wider local cuisine includes yoghurt-based dishes, kebabs and yaprak sarma, stuffed vine leaves.
- Spring and early summer are often pleasant for the green uplands, though conditions vary with elevation.
- Taste Maraş ice cream at an operating local shop in the centre.
- Browse local markets for dairy products and clearly labelled salep products, checking their ingredients and origin.
