Mersin lies on Türkiye's southern Mediterranean coast and is a major commercial port. The province borders Adana to the east and Antalya to the west, with the Taurus Mountains rising behind the coastal plain.
Mersin brings together trade, history and natural scenery. Its strategic position has made it an important economic centre, while modern landmarks coexist with archaeological sites across the province. The large port links the city to Mediterranean and international trade.
The wider region has a long history of settlement and maritime trade. One of its best-known symbols is Kızkalesi, the “Maiden's Castle”, on a small offshore island near the ancient city of Korykos. Roman and Byzantine heritage includes the remains of Soli-Pompeiopolis, especially its colonnaded street, alongside historic churches elsewhere in the province.
Mersin province has a coastline extending for more than 300 kilometres, with beaches, rocky stretches and bays. Citrus groves and palms characterise parts of the coastal landscape. In the Taurus Mountains, villages such as Arslanköy offer upland scenery and opportunities to enjoy nature; use authorised camping areas where available.
The port and industry are important to the economy, while cultural life includes the Mersin International Music Festival, bringing together performers from Türkiye and abroad. Local food includes tantuni, a distinctive meat wrap, and sweets such as künefe and the well-known carrot confection cezerye.
- April to October is a broad coastal visiting season, though midsummer is hot and humid and sea conditions vary.
- Enjoy views towards Kızkalesi around sunset; check boat and castle access separately.
- Take an excursion into the Taurus Mountains to explore traditional villages.
- Try tantuni in a local restaurant in the city centre.
- Walk along the waterfront in the evening for sea views, cafés and city life.
