Protection from Domestic Violence in Türkiye: Safety Measures, Shelter and Support

If you experience violence or fear it, you can seek protection and support before filing a criminal complaint. In immediate danger call 112 from a safe place and give your location, mentioning children or injuries.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Who can request protection?

Law 6284 covers women, children, family members and victims of unilateral persistent stalking who experience violence or are at risk. Violence can be physical, sexual, psychological or economic and include threats and control; you do not have to wait for injury.

The affected person or someone aware of the danger can notify the authorities. A protection measure is separate from a criminal complaint or divorce and can be requested without waiting for either to conclude.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Where can you turn?

ServicePractical help
112 and police or gendarmerieResponse to immediate danger, reports and protection requests
Alo 183 and ŞÖNİMSocial support and referral to protection and shelter services
Public prosecutor or family courtRequests and procedures within each authority’s remit
Bar associationAsk about legal aid and eligibility for a lawyer

Describe the current risk and location, children’s needs, disability and language needs, and request a safe way to communicate. If calling is unsafe, seek help from a trusted person or approach police or a healthcare facility when you can do so safely.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Request suitable measures

Depending on the competent authority and assessment, measures can include removal of the abusive person from the home, restrictions on approaching or contacting you, shelter or temporary protection, and confidentiality of address information. Explain threats, stalking, weapons or children, and ask how measures are enforced and when they expire.

Evidence or an injury report is not required for a protective measure under the law. If you have messages, reports or photographs, keep them when safe: they may help other proceedings. Do not delay requesting protection while collecting them.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Shelter, children and foreign nationals

A woman exposed to violence can request referral to a women’s shelter and explain the needs of children accompanying her. The ministry says foreign women experiencing domestic violence or violence against women can use this service without distinction based on nationality or status; professionals assess the appropriate procedure.

Request an interpreter in a language you understand at the police, prosecutor’s office, healthcare facility or ŞÖNİM, and say if the accompanying person is a source of danger. Do not sign a statement you do not understand; ask for an explanation and corrections. Mention identity documents if available, but do not delay seeking help because they are missing.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Follow the decision and report breaches

Ask for a copy or details of the decision, its duration, the authority responsible for enforcement and how to request an extension before expiry if the risk remains. Give a safe contact method and request confidentiality when needed.

If the person breaches the measure or threats return, notify police or gendarmerie promptly; call 112 if danger is immediate and provide the decision number if available. Do not confront the abusive person to prove a breach. A protection measure is not a criminal conviction.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Practical safety steps

⁦1️⃣⁩ Go somewhere safe and call 112 if danger is immediate.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Tell the authority what happened, the current risk and any children’s or interpretation needs.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Request suitable measures and shelter and a contact method that does not reveal your location.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Keep the decision and request reference somewhere safe and check the expiry date.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Report breaches and seek legal and social support when needed.
