İstanbul has much more than historic mosques and busy markets. Its parks, groves and waterfronts offer a welcome change of pace for:
- Families.
- Children.
- Anyone who enjoys walking or running among trees and open spaces.
Emirgan Grove (Emirgan Korusu)
Location: in Sarıyer, on the European side of the Bosphorus.
Known for: its spring tulip displays, traditionally one of the principal settings for İstanbul’s tulip season.
Highlights:- Tree-lined walking paths.
- Bosphorus views from parts of the grove.
- Café facilities and places for families to sit.
Planning tip:
Spring and autumn can be pleasant for walking. Tulip season is especially popular, so a spring visit does not necessarily avoid crowds; an early weekday visit may be calmer.
Belgrade Forest (Belgrad Ormanı)
Location: north of central İstanbul on the European side.
Suitable for: walking, running and family outings; cycling and picnicking should follow the rules for the particular trail or recreation area.
Highlights:- Established paths for longer walks and runs.
- Woodland surroundings away from busy city streets.
- Designated recreation areas. The existence of a picnic or barbecue facility does not mean fires are permitted at the time of your visit.
Before travelling:
Check the current forest-access and fire restrictions with the authorities and site operator. Seasonal fire-risk measures can affect entry as well as barbecues and open flames.
Yıldız Park (Yıldız Parkı)
Location: in Beşiktaş, on the slope towards Ortaköy and the Bosphorus.
An Ottoman setting:- The grove and historic pavilions are associated with the former Yıldız Palace grounds.
- Some higher points offer views towards the Bosphorus.
Ways to enjoy it:- Walk beneath the trees, allowing for uphill and downhill paths.
- Take photographs of the landscape and historic surroundings.
- Stop at a café where facilities are open.
Kadıköy and the Moda waterfront (Moda Sahili)
Location: Kadıköy and Moda on the Asian side.
Good for: waterfront walks, sunset views and cycling on appropriate routes.
Highlights:- Grassy areas beside the sea, subject to local signs and restrictions.
- A long waterfront route with walking and cycling sections.
- Nearby cafés and restaurants in Kadıköy and Moda.
Gülhane Park (Gülhane Parkı)
Location: beside Topkapı Palace on the Historic Peninsula, close to Sultanahmet and Sirkeci.
A historic public park:- It was formerly part of Topkapı Palace’s outer gardens.
- Today it offers a green retreat in the historic centre and is regarded as one of İstanbul’s oldest public parks.
Why visit?- Combine a walk here with nearby sights such as Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace, allowing for their separate opening times and entry arrangements.
- Take a shaded break after exploring the Historic Peninsula.
Two more places to consider
Atatürk Arboretum (Atatürk Arboretumu):- Near Bahçeköy in Sarıyer, with collections that appeal to anyone interested in trees and plants.
- It is a managed botanical collection, rather than an unrestricted picnic park. Check the operator’s current opening arrangements, admission charges, booking requirements and visitor rules; do not assume that admission is free or a reservation is always necessary.
Üsküdar waterfront (Üsküdar Sahili):- A shoreline walk rather than a conventional park, with views of the Maiden’s Tower and the Bosphorus. Views towards the bridge depend on which stretch you visit.
Practical tips
Avoid the busiest weekend periods where possible.
Bring drinking water and, where site rules permit, snacks, especially when visiting woodland farther from shops. Managed botanical sites may have stricter food rules.
Check signs and current rules on picnics, barbecues and access to lawns; permission varies by place and season.
Use up-to-date route information, such as a map service or the local transport operator’s app, to plan the bus, metro, ferry and walking sections of the journey.
When İstanbul’s busy streets and shopping centres begin to feel overwhelming, a park or waterfront walk can offer a welcome breather. Share your experiences and photographs if you visit any of these places.
