Neighbour issues can make apartment life difficult: loud music, repeated noise or a small misunderstanding that grows over time.
This guide suggests practical ways to handle them calmly and fairly.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
• Try to meet your immediate neighbours:
- across the landing;
- upstairs;
- downstairs.
• Knowing each other’s names and faces:
- makes communication easier;
- may make a later conversation less awkward.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In an apartment building, you may hear:
• Children playing occasionally.
• Chairs moving, a washing machine or water in pipes.
• Footsteps from the floor above.
Sounds that may become a serious nuisance include:
• Very loud music for long periods.
• Persistent shouting or arguments.
• Repeated late-night parties.
• Drilling or demolition during rest periods.
Timing, duration, intensity and the building’s rules matter. Occasional household sound and a persistent disturbance should be considered in context.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
If direct contact feels safe and appropriate:
1) Choose a calm moment rather than approaching in anger.
2) Keep the request specific and courteous:
“Hello, sorry to interrupt. We can hear the music quite clearly in our apartment. Could you turn it down a little, please?”
3) Avoid accusations or raising your voice.
People may not realise how far sound travels until a neighbour explains it.
You do not need to confront someone directly where there is threatening behaviour or a safety concern.

A complex or organised apartment building may have:
• Site yönetimi — residential-complex management.
• Yönetim — building management.
• A kapıcı — caretaker, whose role may differ from that of the manager.
You can:
• Tell management about the disturbance.
• Explain recurring problems involving a particular apartment.
• Ask management to contact the resident and explain the building’s rules.
Keep a factual record of repeated incidents if the problem continues.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
You should be able to use your home reasonably, and neighbours also need to carry on ordinary daily life.
• Avoid:
- very loud television or music at night;
- drilling during sleeping or quiet hours.
• If you have children:
- do what you reasonably can to reduce late-night disturbance.
Check the management plan and applicable local rules rather than assuming that one set of quiet hours applies to every building.
Turkish tenancy law requires tenants to use the property carefully and show proper consideration for neighbours.

If:
• Courteous requests have not helped.
• You have informed management.
• The disturbance continues or becomes worse.
You may need to:
• Check the appropriate formal complaint route for the nature and location of the problem.
• Consider moving when the tenancy can lawfully be ended, if the situation makes daily life intolerable.
The correct route depends on the circumstances; a complaint does not itself guarantee a particular penalty, eviction or remedy.
Dialogue is useful when it is safe and productive. Serious threats or an immediate safety concern should not be treated simply as an ordinary neighbour disagreement.

Show the same consideration you would like from others:
• Keep noise at a reasonable level.
• Leave entrances and lifts clean.
• Park considerately.
• Put rubbish in the correct place at the appropriate time.
Comfortable shared living depends on people respecting both their own space and the people around them.
